Another copyright extension release like the 1966 world tour box.  Always figured they had these recordings.  Wonder if Neil Young will offer something similar when Live Rust turns 50?  
 

There is enough diversity in the set lists to keep me interested, as well as Dylan's inclination for altered arrangements.

No interest in the vinyl set.  It will cost a lot more, but mostly, it's a pain in the ass to jockey that many sides and it disrupts the continuity of the performance.  A reel-to-reel option would be intriguing though.

As someone who wrote about every single Bob Dylan + The Band 1974 show earlier this year, a few initial thoughts about the just-announced 27 disc box set

It’s pretty much the holy grail for ’74 fans. 21 of these soundboards tapes are never-before-circulated. That’s an insane number. Only 5 soundboards were already circulating: Boston 1/14 (early), NYC 1/31 (late), Oakland 2/11 (l), and the final shows in LA 2/14 (e+l).

The soundboards come from both 16-track tape (the shows recorded for Before the Flood) and more basic 1/4” tape and cassette. But Before the Flood was taken almost entirely from the final 2 LA shows. So the multitracks of NYC, Seattle and Oakland have mostly never been heard.

Most excitingly, many of the new soundboards come from early dates when setlists were wilder. As the tour went on, things began to stagnate in both song choice and performance (energy substituting for nuance). But the first couple weeks are special. Better than Before the Flood.

The must-play show for me will be opening night in Chicago. It began with the wildest song of the entire run: A loud electric arrangement of his extremely obscure folk-era song “Hero Blues.” But the audience tape we have is terrible. Can’t wait to finally hear it properly.

A shame the other potential holy grail song, the only-ever live “As I Went Out One Morning,” is from a show that they apparently didn’t record. Audience tape is decent at least.

The biggest bummer tho: No Band songs! They were a huge part of the narrative. In 1966, they’d been unknown backing musicians. By 74 they were stars themselves, and got two of their own mini-sets every night. A shame they’re not included (not even opening night, when Bob sat in).

Also many shows do not have the complete Bob sets. Songs missing left and right. Either they didn’t record all the songs in the moment or they lost some later. Too bad. But audience tapes can fill in the gaps (there’s one for every show).

Biggest gap is 7 missing shows between 1/31 NYC and 2/9 Seattle. Maybe once they'd switched to the multi-track truck after NY they didn't record the other shows. That sadly means no Leon Russell appearance in St. Louis (tho he didn't add much musically, just good vibes).

I wonder how well you'll be able to hear the crowds. One fun thing listening to all the audience tapes was hearing the Nixon-era crowds ROAR at the "Even the president of the US sometimes must have to stand naked." So memorable I made a medley.

One guy even streaked during the naked-president line. Bill Graham tackled him.

We can now make the alternate Before the Flood I envisioned in February. Some wild electric reinventions (Hollis Brown, It Aint Me), some surprises (Hero Blues), some acoustic new songs (Wedding Song, Nobody Cept You), all in soundboard quality. This will be a hell of a playlist.

The 3-LP Third Man set does this too. But "hand selected versions of every song Bob Dylan recorded that was not included on the original 1974 live album"? Hmm why does that concept sound familiar? Oh yeah, I did that in 2022 (with crappier tapes)

There is good diversity in the performances, even to this day, I just 3 shows and the landscape for each was completely different than the other, despite a static set list.

The Rolling Thunder Revue collection was like that too. Lots of repetition of songs, but their performances were often very different.

Not to mention Live66 box... no 2 shows alike and nearly the same set list throughout. Pull out Paris and say Newcastle and you got completely different feeling performances. That set is great as you can feel the tension building from one show to the next
