For those who weren't watching the dodger game last night, this is what you missed

Probably the "biggest" baseball moment (for a single player) in my lifetime. Guy is a legend.

and don't forget he's a pitcher too lol

In the club. Diggit!

I missed it. Thanks for the link.

What about the guy who played for two teams in one day?

Could end up being the GOAT.  First year of that massive (back loaded) ten year contract.

Think Blue!

That's coming up Monday, Zang. https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/23/sport/mlb-player-quirky-history-two-teams...

Boston Red Sox player Danny Jansen will make Major League Baseball history Monday by playing for two teams in one game, a team spokesperson confirmed to CNN.

The Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park Monday to complete a suspended game between the two teams from June 26.

This is where things get interesting.

Jansen, a catcher, who was a member of the Blue Jays at the time, was in the middle of an at-bat when the game was suspended due to weather. About a month later, he was traded to Boston.

With the game resuming and Jansen no longer a Blue Jay but a Red Sox player, the box score will show the 29-year-old featuring for both teams, should he play.

On Friday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced he intends to help Jansen do something no other major league player has done before.

“He will play Game 1, by the way. For all the people that have been looking at history, yeah, let me throw it out there,” Cora told the Boston Herald.

Monday’s game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET and will resume in the top of the second inning with the score 0-0 and Jansen up to bat. However, Toronto will pinch-hit for Jansen and he will be announced as a defensive substitution for the Red Sox, replacing catcher Reese McGuire, who was designated for assignment by the team last month.

Cora said he has been getting texts from sports reporters asking if Jansen is going to catch.

“You know what? Yeah, he’s catching!” Cora added. “Let’s make history.”

Besides being a pitcher every fifth game, he also plays a very solid right field.  The Dodgers have limited him to only DHing this year while he recovers from elbow surgery.  He did.throw 10 pitches off the bullpen mound today, but the Dodgers are still saying he won't be pitching in any games this year, including the playoffs.

I think there is/was a question about whether he pitches again.  Ohtani is a modern day Babe Ruth.

I still wonder if he was involved in the betting scandal and his buddy just took the fall.  Maybe not.

Chasing titles just like Lebron James. If you're one of, if not the, best in the sport, don't move to a team that already has enough talent to win a title.

How many did the Dodgers win last year?  Team already had enough talent to go all the way, like Lebron's move to Miami.  Dave Roberts is not the manager to lead a team to a title.  Screw that lame covid World Series title, 60 games is not a season.

While I would agree normally, this one is a little different.   Same city so he doesn't actually have to move from his house and he was going to likely stay on the west coast - so limited to 5 options.  You don't want to move to or stay on a team that isn't going to compete with your monster salary or is rebuilding so that may cut it down to another 1-2.  It was an obvious choice and he made it. I'm sure just his branding in LA alone is worth staying in that city - much like Lebron's. And to Lebron's credit, he did go to Cleveland. And won!

Dodgers are just like the Yankees of the 90s.  It will be embarrassing if and when they lose.

B.F.D.

I don't really care about pennants, just the game really

to be able to watch a career unfold in the fashion Shohei's has is a very rare thing

name any other player (ever) who can strike out most any batter and/or also HR off any pitcher

in the clutch? There's really only one other guy even remotely in that conversation

Dude's entire game is on its own level

dude's a monster.

we always have the talent...the pitching and dave roberts, not so much.

my angle's buddy is not very happy.

but yeah, it was a no brainer going to the dodgers.

They say he's going tp pitch next year...?  Don't count on it lasting long .   So get your tix early.  G.O.A.T.?  Who said that?   Are you  kidding ?

You got anything to actually add, here?

Or just a typical yankee fan?

>>>Chasing titles just like Lebron James. If you're one of, if not the, best in the sport, don't move to a team that already has enough talent to win a title<<<

Such a common statement among sports fans, but in three-dimensional human reality it's a completely ridiculous concept.

If you're one of the best in the world in any profession, wouldn't you want to be surrounded by the best? If you're the best heart surgeon in the world do you want to work in the best hospitals, with the very best associates, or be satisfied prescribing cholesterol medication to overweight people in a community hospital in Elko Nevada?

If you're a brilliant mathematician, will you be satisfied teaching middle school math classes with 40 kids in a class who couldn't care less, don't pay attention, don't do their homework and only look to disrupt your class, or work with the best in the world at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, discovering new ways to go further?

If you're one of the great athletes of your time/all time, do you want to waste your talent playing for an organization that doesn't provide you with the best opportunities, continually surrounding you with mediocrity, expecting YOU to always carry the load and always end up losing in the end, or do you want to play for an organization that is dedicated to excellence, surrounding you with the best of everything so you're able to maximize your talent and have a real chance to achieve the ultimate goal?

And of course that's not even considering the human aspects, like maybe he's really comfortable in LA and didn't want to move somewhere else.

BTW, "chasing titles" is the ONLY worthwhile objective for any professional athlete. Anything else, including all the above examples is a waste of talent, a waste of opportunity. And nothing leads to regret more than wasted opportunity and wasted talent.

And of course Ohtani is going to pitch again. He's one of the best pitchers in the league and these days pitchers almost always come back strong after Tommy John surgery; that's why his contract is so massive and unique.

The dude is a freak. He's possibly the most talented player of all time and he SHOULD be playing for an elite franchise so he can maximize his potential and so we can all see his brilliance on the highest stage, which was never going to happen in Anaheim, or probably San Francisco or most anywhere else.

The guy is right where he should be.

Fucker.

Giants fan - couldn't you tell ?

The Dodgers have Ohtani.

The Yankees have Judge.

As easy as it is to root against those teams, those guys are good and having amazing seasons.

Both will get a chance to be playoff heros or goats.

..shohei-trout.jpg

snagged that pic at the beginning of the section my buddy has season seats for. not bad if i don't say myself.

Judge can't throw K's

and he can't really steal either

i suppose it's still (mathematically) within reach for Jose Ramirez to go 40/40 this season if he has a big September

couple OG's in that pic. Nice!

Nice photo, Turtle

late season push

throw hard low

throw one more

chin music

straight heat at the wrist

bye

Now of course the big question is if shohei will be the first player ever to 50/50. It's still August. He's been solidly putting two a week over the fence all season. Barring another sideline injury he will likely reach 50+ homers.

He can't really get walked, as any hitter behind him still puts the opposing pitcher in a disaster type situation

It's really down to whether or not he gets enough on base opportunities to bag up the rest imo

48/48

11 games left

He DID It 50~50   On The Road His Own Solo Club

That 50th Ball Is Worth Some Coin ! $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Technically It Is 50~51 But Who's Counting

51~51

>>>>But Who's Counting

Everyone

Maybe the greatest individual performance in the history of baseball.   I know there have been a few four HR games but damn, that was some ridiculous shit.

even if shohei retired this afternoon, he would already be the best to have ever played the game

unicorn status

i can't believe I'm alive to see this

purty good day

 10+ RBI

 6+ hits

 5+ XBH

3+ HR

2+ SB

And he only played half the game! ;)

Ohtani 2024 6th year of MLB play AB 603 AVG .297 HR 52 RBI 122 SB 52 OPS 1.013

Bonds 1991 6th year                      AB 510 AVG .292 HR 25 RBI 116 SB 43 OPS .924

no doubt though Barry was a better hitter (and I'm a Barry fan), but you just can't have that discussion without the "steroid thing" fucking it all up.

(Or the wife beating)

(or the 7x gold gloves)

okay, 8 gold gloves

And all the intentional walks. No batter has ever been feared as much.

And I think the uppers that most players used to take were  much worse performance enhancing drugs.

First day of auction; already bid over 2 million (including buyers premium). Still 6+ days to go

https://goldin.co/item/sept-19-2024-shohei-ohtani-becomes-first-member-o...

I do see this going over 3 million which is the current "most expensive" home run ball, that one was mcgwire #70

And thanks on that other thing mark. I'm usually listening online to knbr or 960 or whatever with the tv on mute

now I know what I've been missing lol

>>>No batter has ever been feared as much.

Barry Bonds

Every era has it's thing. If you want to disqualify I would say the era of only playing against other white guys is right up there. I mean look at pro cycling around the same time as Bonds. They kept the samples so they could re test them once technology gets better and they have pulled medals from something like the top ten racers.

My only problem with steroids is if you have to take them to be competitive and that would suck for the people who have to damage their bodies to stay in the game, but all you have to do is look at football to understand that people are more than happy to destroy their bodies in order to hear a stadium full of people scream for them. Some people used them more than others in the Bonds era, but I seriously doubt there was anyone who was completely clean.

That said Bonds was also the biggest asshole of all time so don't care what his legacy ends up being.

None of this should take away from Ohtani -  a generational talent that will change the future of the game like Woods did for golf.
