OK, so thanks to the great zoner Googly Moogly I saw BEAT tonight in San Jose, the King Crimson inspired band playing the first show of their tour.
This is not a show I would normally have gone to, but our boy Hall set me up with a ticket to reciprocate for a few tix I've passed his way.
First of all, I'll say that if there are better people in the world than the Great Googly Moogly I'd love to meet them, and if you've met that guy than you know what I'm talking about. The show was fine but the best part of tonight was getting to hang out with him, and also running into the legendary Doogels and his better half after the show.
As for the show, I'm not a big King Crimson fan as I find their music a bit too mechanical, too mathematical for my taste. That being said, this band is a raw four-piece with the brilliant Steve Vai & Adrian Belew on guitars, Tony Levin on bass and Danny Carey from Tool on drums, so it was a pretty pared down presentation compared to what the actual King Crimson band has been doing with the multiple drummers and other players on their previous few tours.
I think not knowing any of the material helped, allowing me to just put my hat down and rock to what they were playing.
They did two 45-minute sets with an intermission and a two-song encore. I have to say that I enjoyed it more than the past couple of times I've seen Crimson, as this rocked harder and was more straight-forward in its delivery, with lots of excellent guitar playing from both Vai and Belew. Of course Tony Levin was great as usual, so the only real critique I have is that Carey didn't really show his stuff. That guy is one of the best drummers in the world and I was expecting some real fireworks from him, but while everything he did was great it was all pretty basic, especially for him.
I thought the second set was stronger, with some real rockin', groovy songs and a couple that had a strong Talking Heads feel, getting us all moving.
Overall it was a very good show that will likely get better as the tour continues. If you like King Crimson you'll probably really like this, and even if you're not familiar with the band but enjoy prog inspired, guitar heavy music you'll likely enjoy this.
I don't get out as much as I used to, and I think the best part of tonight was just being out among the people at a rock 'n roll show.
I do love it so, so as always I'm inspired to say.....
GO TO THE SHOW!!!

Thanks for the review! The show here near Pittsburgh is sold out and I'm really excited about it. Trying really hard not to look at the setlists or any spoilers and take it all in "in the moment" as Fripp would say... i would think the setlists are going to be pretty much the same each night, maybe mix the songs around a bit in each set?

Thanks for the kind words,
Thanks for the kind words, Lance! Great hangin' with you as well... always fun to talk music with someone as experienced and articulate as yourself, hope to do it again soon.
So before the tour I had been listening a fair amount to the 3 albums that they're mostly featuring on this tour and have come to really enjoy the majority of the songs, so it was great to hear them come to life at the weathered old San Jose Civic (where our boy Lance was in the house band once upon a lifetime ago).
The 2nd set was definitely more to my liking as well. While I liked the way the 1st set began, it went into a mellower, more ballad driven direction, whereas the 2nd set was heavily rocking and the excellent interplay between Belew, Vai and Levin throughout the show has really stayed in my head for the past 5 days.
And since they have added a 2nd San Jose Civic show mid tour (Nov 20) with lots of reasonably priced tickets, I've decided to go get another fix of good ole rock and roll.
GTTS!

Just home .... a band of giants
Have seen Belew & Levin together many times but the new guys!!!! Vai played the Fripp parts - and was able to fit his own styling into some familiar riffs while playing others strictly by the book. The drummer was the glue that held everything together. It's a guitar and bass band, so the drums were not out front, but the guy was rock solid on the Bruford riffs all night, and slid them right in with talent. He played hard, but fit the beats perfectly in the grooves to the point that the Geetar players were able to shine.
It was a Wow-za evening
