Or as he said "Grab yer Nighties"- has moved on.
One of the great bluesmen and song writers out of Chicago who migrated to the bay area back in the day.
Played with Butterfield, Electric Flag, Dinosaurs, Big Brother , Jerry, etc....
Met him once at a show in SLC - great afternoon in Liberty Park.
Rest easy Nick.

Many nights spent at the Saloon, Chi-Chi club, Lost and Found, Grant and Green checking out Thunder & Lightning, Animal Mind etc.I guess this leaves Greg Errrico as the last T&L member standing......Man, i miss the days of driving up to Negri's in Occidental for dinner and a Nick show. So many fond memories!

I saw him a few times over
I saw him a few times over the years, but have always been aware of his brilliant history.
The man played with the greatest of them all, and after that he was the consummate local pro, a true troubadour.
Another Bay Area character has left town.
On it goes.

Alan - are you referring to the Artist benefit show somewhere South of Market? That was a great night of music with Jerry sitting in with Country Joe, then Nick and Chip (I think). Truly a one off.

Another obscure Nick and John
Another obscure Nick and John venue ... the Boathouse on Lake Merced. I think I still have the handbill for one of those shows.
oh and here's one I don't remember the name of ... it was a club South of Market that had a swimming pool that was covered by a transparent dance floor. Really dark inside. Disco-ish. Might have had 7 in the name? Saw a few shows there... Thunder and Lightning. Fish and Chips? Possibly Zero.
I think it's so great that you guys also experienced and remember the late 80s Bay area "Dinosaur" era ( I use that term broadly) that existed under the prevailing Dead scene. There was so much music going on at the little places dotted around town, with North Beach being the most consistent. There was nothing like seeing Nick's big car pull up outside the Saloon and him and John stroll in. (Yes I remember karate girl.) Can't forget the Last Day Saloon, Full Moon Saloon. Grant and Green. Omni in Emeryville... list goes on.

Alan - The Oasis. That was a funny place. I always thought the floor would give away. I think there's a picture somewhere of Jerry walking Susanna Millman 'down' the aisle' across the pool. Good times.

First encountered Nick on the record album "Joplin in Concert" where he and Janis do an amazing duet on the song "Ego Rock." Listened to that hundreds of times.
I also vividly recall when he had the unenviable task of closing a show at the Golden Gate Park Band shell AFTER Zero with Jerry played, as the crowd rapidly melted away.
Always a local treasure, he will be missed. RIP Nick Gravenites.
