The proposed merger, announced nearly two years ago, is the largest in U.S. supermarket history. Kroger and Albertsons, two of the nation's largest grocery chains, aim to create a massive combined entity operating over 4,000 stores across the country.Aug 26, 2024
Albertsons and Safeway became one company in 2015. If Kroger is able to go through with this new merger they will own those two names as well as Fred Meyer, a PNW chain. I shop at local independent grocery stores (Capella, Market of Choice), spend more, feel better about it.
Rob (Plf9905) the prices of groceries are like everything else. They keep going up, the rich get richer. You can bet that the farmers are paying more for everything and not benefiting from higher prices. Same for most manufacturers until you reach the top of the pyramid. Workers are not making more. It's so demoralizing.
I do eat meat, and I get chicken from Capella and other meats from Long’s. Capella can get organic chicken, which is what I want, and Long’s doesn't get it
Worst thing that ever happened to DTV was being bought by ATT. Fuck ATT.
But them buying Dish really sucks for us I am sure.
The problem I have with Safeway is that every time I go there, another healthy choice has been dropped. Less organics and more garbage, I only go there every couple months or so now.
For an idea of what you are buying from "supermarkets" read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan.
I pulled the plug on my satellite service about 6 months ago, and switched to YouTube TV for most of my viewing, supplemented by a couple of services like Hulu and Netflix on an occasional basis. The satellite service was costing me about $120 a month for their most basic package. Now, I'm paying YouTube $73 a month, and the supplements add on about another $20-25. I now have much more content to choose from for about 15-20% less than I was paying.

They're contained in about 30-40% of the items in the average grocery store is the way I've heard it.

More or less simultaneously, ATT sold DTV to some un-named investment company.
