I lost my cool

Forums:

2nd night of Billy Strings in Alabama. Most of the sme people in our area due to purchasing both nights at the same time. Dudeman and his gal friend were Alabama locals and they were life long friends and do a ton of shows together, They both dressed up for Halloween. She was a rhinestone cowgirl with lots of glittery clothes, hats and boots. He had a rainbow hat on and tie died cloths. Not a 100% sure what he was but he did have that big rainbow hat on.

Before the show started he asked me if it bothered me due to me sitting for 60% of the show due to my bad back. I told him i didn't give a fuck either ay and to enjoy his hat.

Then the stupidity began.

Dude man and his gal showed up behind us, they were not there on night 1 and instantly spilled 1/2 a beer on my wife and I. He mumbled a half ass apology and we moved on. He then started spewing homo talk about hat man in front of me sucking cocks and such, Again we just sat there and listened. 2 songs into the show he leans in front of me and pushed hat man telling him to take that shit off that his ole lady cant see. He removes his hat and they proceed to giggle how the faggot listened to him. I got my fat assed 6-4 body up, stood tall and even thrusted my shoulders back. Now no one behind me can see shit.

Now Jack ass starts hooting and hollering at the end of each verse and singing along. Off key, out of tune and half the words wrong. Slammin beers and getting louder and sloppier as the show went on. I turned 3x when he was talking and gave them the stink eye.

At intermission they each came back with 3 beers each and started slammin them. There plain ole getting fucked up now. I talked to them for a minuet or so and asked them to please refrain from talking while the band is playing, They agreed and I was looking forward to set 2.

Billy came out and by himself was singing Catch and Release. They started up even louder than before. I was pissed off. I swing around in a very loud and barking voice screamed SHUT THE FUCK UP. I was shocked I did that.

But you know what? They sure shut the fuck up. Not anouther peep from those 2. By the end of the show 4 different people thanked me for the out burst.

Ever snap ata a show??

Ha....Sorry i missed ya Tim.   We had a great time at the shoes - although somehow missed that Leftover was playing an afternoon gig.  Whoops.

Venue was easy to get into and out of.  Decent sound and we likely will return.

I actually expected a lot of what you describe above but surprisingly had great people around us both nights. All very respectful and having a good time.

Snapped at a show?  Not that I can recall but highly likely.

Not surprised. I'd say that the Billy Strings shows of the last few years I've witnessed have featured the worst overall crowd behavior of any I've seen in decades... the problem nowadays is that generally people are so reactionary that calling out their behavior usually leads  to pushback on some level. I'm glad it worked out for you. I've called out a few over the years, including one hysterical woman at Outlaw show this summer freaking out because someone called her an entitled bitch during Dylan's set. I finally had enough and told her that if she couldn't respect us at least respect the artist . She went a long way to prove them right

Ever snap ata a show??

at a dnb show in grass valley, a couple was dancing with each other really wildly, flinging each other around so that they would knock into other people. it was very obvious they were doing it intentionally. eventually they made their way over to me, the dude comes flying at me, and just before he hits me i lunge towards him with my shoulder as hard as i could and knocked both of them back, almost to the ground. they both just stared at me, and i turned to fully face them and just gave the dude the stink eye for what felt like quite awhile, then they both just left silently and i didnt see them for the rest of the show.

It sounds like you snapped a bit, Tim, but from what I know about you, you will never lose your cool.

Worse than a Dave Mathews Band show?

Well to be fair, the closest I've come to attending a DMB show in 30 years was Farm Aid solo with Tim. Before that was probably a Horde show. Honestly tho, from what I've seen at the half dozen shows in the last few years, Billy scene has degraded to that level if not worse because theyll guise their arrogance under the cloak of hippie goodwill. I didn't notice it at the few shows I saw pre 2022

Sometimes you just gotta get down to their level and speak in language they can easily understand

and now back to your regularly scheduled program

I find phish crowds worse than Billy Strings but BS is set up like a tinderbox.

I also tend to sit towards the back where it's probably a lot more chill. I've heard the front is pretty rough for a "jam band"   (enter joke here)

yes. regularly.

it amazes me people pay over a hundred fucking dollars for something just to talk and get fucked up. that's what a fucking bar is for.

recent: charley crocket/asleep at the wheel/ jr brown - 6 hags on chardonnay

Sturgil...6 22 yr olds over-served. $160 show....shut the fuck up.

willie/phil...shoved an asshole.

freestone peaches - 3 people drunk slamming into me...

richard thompson...

shall i continue?

not sure at 5.9 why i'm the one in the crowd to tell people to shut up.

Not sure why it's so bad now but I think this contributes.

Going to see live music has changed from having an interest in seeing a band you like, play music -  to the same kind of thought that goes into going out to a restaurant. As long as the genre is in the ballpark of the kind of music they like then people are going to go because it's just a way to hang out with people.

This has been cemented in place by festivals where almost no one is into the band performing until the headliners and streaming playlists where a lot of people have no idea the name of the band they are listening to.

Also there is this sort of unwritten rock and roll rule that everyone is there to party and this isn't classical man - don't be so uptight and tell me what to do.

Drunk frat boy at a 92 soldier field show had a fake ticket and tried to take my seat. Didn't work. Stupid juice and adult sized children ruin a good time quickly. There was a Blair Jackson story where he was lamenting the noticeable shift from the use of psychedelics to alcohol and the shift in the crowd.

Was at a Sturgill show almost two weeks ago in far western Arkansas. Surprisingly, lots of weed. Very chill and pleasant crowd, and very chill security.  Not many drinkers around us.

Great show. Not much alcohol.

Dang FlashB people can sure suck.

it's all good, let it go.

LOL

it happens

glad they finally listened

dumbasses

Sorry to hear you had to deal with all of that!  Totally sucks that some people are so oblivious of how they're affecting others.

Can't say that I've ever "snapped" at a show, but there was at one of the Furthur shows at the LA greek I was minding my own business doing my crazy dancing thing in one of the aisles and a group of frat types is hovering nearby and one of them decides it'd be funny to start immitating me to get laughs from his group.  It was OK for for a little bit, but eventually started to get annoying as he tried harder and harder to get a rise out of me.  So, my "snap" was moving close to his gf to start dancing with her ... she smiled knowingly and was a good sport, but it got under my clone's skin.   So it kind of worked.

I have just given in and now carry several painted rocks to hand out,......they all say STFU. I give them liberally.
