The Last Time I Saw Phil Play

Too long ago. TXR, 2019 or 2020.

Warfield, 5/9/24, his second to last public performance.

Final song, Uncle John's Band. I can live with that.

July 21 2024.

For the first time in my life i don't have a Phil show on the horizon. It's a new day...

Seems so long ago... 6/10/18 at TXR.

I didn't see many shows in 2019 and then covid happened. I can't believe it has been so long.

But what a gem to find this just now!

its been a long time for me also. i dont even remember the last show i was at TBH. its easy to want to feel regret over something like this, but i mostly stepped away from phil shows during a time when i wasnt really that into the types of shows that were often going on, and my own personal mental conversations during these shows were growing increasingly negative due to the feeling like there was this experience of religious bliss that i was always so close to obtaining again, but so often was just out of my reach during the txr years, and my own mental conversations during these shows were growing increasingly angry at the behavior of my fellow concert attendees.

at the end of the day, it is sad that i missed my last handful of choices to see phil, and it seems like one or two of those would have been shows id  really have liked, but at the same time, when i think about the final days of me going to txr, and the negative headspace id so frequently find myself in, im happy that the majority of my memories with phil are from what i consider the peak of the time i was personally able to see phil, mostly centered around classic PLF, furthur, and the first few years of txr that imo offered far more gems than the later years.

it reminds me a bit of what GG Allin said about dying at your peak, at the peak of your power and intensity, so your soul will be that much stronger in the next life. i missed a lot of my final chances to see phil, but i bowed out of phil shows at the end of what was the peak of the years i was able to see phil play, and thats how my memories of phil shows gets to remain. its hard to regret the shows i missed when the memories i have are so good.

I think the last time I saw Phil play was the last three fare thee well shows in Chicago.   Before that - 2008 at the Fillmore as I was leaving SF.   Turns out, ATL is not a high traffic location for getting all the shows.

I almost hit the show before BMFS this summer but I think he canceled from that one anyway.

prob the same as rrg

My last Phil show was his return to the Xmas jam in Ashville on 12/10/2022 .

It was good final show.

I Know You Rider, B-Day run '24.  1st time on Earth Day 4/22/77.

Same here, and also saw Dillon the night before.   I really dug both of these shows.

The most haunting thing now is the Red Rocks show with SCI that Phil had to pull out of (I think it was covid).   As much as it was great to have William Apostol sit in for Phil, I was really bummed that Phil wasn't able to make it.  I was thinking afterwards how I'd make an effort to see him if he's within the region or even go out to California, but alas it never happened :-(

Wow Turtle.

Best set list EVER!!!

I remember hearing this when it first went up, but not since then.

Wonder if it's even accessible now.

Might give it a shot a little later.

Man, those are all my favorite songs.

2007, the last time I was in NYC. I had finally gotten my Stephen. I'll come back for more nostalgia.

first Phil: Jet to the Promised Land (June 15, 1976, Beacon Thr)

last Phil: It's All Over Now Baby Blue (Dec 17, 2023, The Fillmore)

^ seems apropos

smallest venue: Phil Lesh and Friends Live at Tenderloin Community School?  7th Note Showclub? The Independent?  probably The Bar at Crossroads.

largest venue: 300,000 people, Polo Fields at Bill Graham Memorial

The final Warfield show in May was the last time I saw Phil.

So grateful to have attended all those final Warfield and Fillmore shows in 2023-2024, riding the rail at the Fillmore, exchanging smiles back and forth with Phil.

My first Phil and Friends show was 9/24/94 in Berkeley.

My Birthday on October 9, 1999 I went to see Phil and Friends at The Warfield, not realizing it was just the start of another 25 years searching for, and finding, the sound. Met a lot of cool new zoner friends along the way.

Still coming to grips that it's all over now. We won't have Phil on stage again, though the music will certainly continue.

God Bless you, Phil, and God Bless us every one.

3/6/24 ~ The final Q show. I guess that was as good a way to finish as any.

3/6/24 was a good way to go out or me, as well
