It's a little too early to get excited about football, but pre-season starts tonight. Last year's disappointments are a distant memory.
As usual, the Ravens are projected to be contenders in a tough division. Our secondary looks really strong this year and we added sledgehammer runningback Derrick Henry. But we still have some unanswered questions -- most worrying, regarding our offensive line and pass rush. Our wide receiver depth is a little iffy, too. And there is still the issue of can our star QB anticipate his targets and connect with them in long yardage situations.
For the next month it is all about avoiding injuries. Tonight is a glorified tryout.

Season starts again this
Season starts again this Thursday night with a rematch against Kansas City. Ravens look reasonably decent with the big question mark being the "new" Offensive line. Can they protect Lamar? Can they facilitate the running game?
Barring season-ending injuries to major players, I'll predict a 12 and 5 season and another playoff spot in a tough division.
The bigger question is the schedule....can the team survive the NFL's greedy business model?
[...On top of that, there are some disturbing stretches in the second half of the season, including three games in 14 days and another three in 10.
“The idea of having guys that are 300-plus pounds out there pounding the hell out of each other and playing that many games over a short period of days, I don’t know how you recover,” Lopez said. “When you throw all the travel in on top of it and then you look at the Ravens’ schedule, you go, ‘Holy crap, it’s just crazy.’...
Everybody wants a piece of the pie, so you’re going to probably have a game every night of the week or every day of the week in the future.” It’s inevitable, and it’s all about the money while player safety has been put on the back shelf.]

Including the players. The schedule is what makes those salaries possible. They negotiate the collective bargaining agreement which leads to the players getting a percentage of the total take. They can negotiate less games and get less money.
It's weird that the NFL is one of the most communist organizations in the US with their revenue sharing. If Jerry Jones owned a baseball team he would have bought a few super bowls by now.

Well, I suppose it's time for
Well, I suppose it's time for me to chime in here.
Not much to talk about with my team. No major changes, pretty much the same group on both sides, with perhaps/hopefully some minor upgrades here & there.
The main concerns among the Niner Nation are injuries, possible early lack of cohesion because of some long holdouts, lack of depth at certain positions, a tough division and of course the dreaded Super Bowl Hangover. But it seems to me that almost all of those are every team's concerns except for the hangover deal, and in my book that's not the worst problem to have to face.
Ultimately, the 49ers are pretty damn loaded once again, they have as good a chance as any to get back to the Big Commercial, and they should be fun to watch. Plus, they have four prime time home games this season, and after 42 years of going regularly I still fucking love the night games; there is nothing like football under the lights.
So now it's time to play some football and watch these supreme athletes sacrifice their bodies and compete at 110%. And to begin cursing my fantasy team. The games haven't even started yet and I'm already kicking myself for taking Isaiah Pacheco over Kyren Williams, so I'm in mid-season form.
Sigh.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready for some football!!!

Well they say it's a game of
Well they say it's a game of inches, and based on the last 5 seconds of the game, when the Ravens had a chance to possibly go on and win it with the help of a desperation touchdown pass, it was. Initially the pass was ruled a touchdown, but on review, a sliver of the receiver's toe was on the white line, enabling Kansas City to maintain it's 27 - 20 lead. By a toe.
Admittedly the Chiefs were the better team all night --- the Ravens ran a hodge podge of plays and never established a controlling personality. Lamar had to run way too much. And they shot themselves in the foot with a plethora of weird penalties and turnovers. Still, they almost pulled it off. Against any other team, they probably would have won. But Mahomes and his offense was just too quick for the Raven's defense.
I hate these Thursday night games. 8:30 is too late for cooking and eating dinner and by 1100 ish I was getting tired already after a few drinks, with another hour still to go.

He has learned nothing about running out of bounds or sliding before you take a hit, and how many times did he end up letting the clock run out and took a penalty? Twice in the first half, before I fell asleep. Run Henry all night long against Mahomes and that offense, keep Mahomes off the field. What happened to the bully raven game?

Three of our offensive lineman were playing their first NFL game. The other two vets on the line were getting questionable penalty calls. So Lamar was getting lots of pressure. Our star tight ends were consigned to help with blocking. Lamar is not really great when it comes to long ball passing. So the only option was for him to scramble.
I agree that he can't run like that every game.

>>>Lamar was getting lots of
>>>Lamar was getting lots of pressure<<<
If they're going to keep calling that penalty on the tackles being too far off the line, QBs getting lots of pressure is going to be a bigger problem for every quarterback, which means more QB hits & sacks, which means more injured QBs.
Which means that after two or three marquee quarterbacks go down that penalty will likely go quietly away.
And I was also surprised that the Ravens didn't use Henry more. That guy should be getting around 25 carries and two or three receptions a game. Scrambling or not, there is no way Jackson is going to last if he's getting more carries than Henry.
>>>do the new kick off rules mean no more onside kicks<<<
I think teams can still do it, but I believe there are now game situation restrictions and the kicking team has to officially declare that they're going to do it so everyone lines up correctly.
The new kickoff rule is stupid. But then again, when was the last time those dolts created a new rule that was smart?

I read up on the kick off
I read up on the kick off rules. So it came from the XFL and they bring it out to the 35 when you kick it through the end zone. That is what the NFL rules committee wanted to do but the owners decided that the 30 was enough. I'm sure who ever the stats guy is on every team ran the numbers on drives starting on the 20 and the 30 and I bet there is almost no difference so through the end zone it goes.
As for on side kicks it is incredibly stupid and if you ever have to explain it to someone who doesn't follow football they will think you are explaining Calvin Ball where you can make up any rule you want.
You can only do it in the 4th quarter, only if you are behind in the score, and you have to declare that you are doing it, and then the new kick off rules get shelved and you line up the old way.

An unfortunate metaphor for the first home game. Ravens collapsed and gave it away to the Raiders (26-23) after having a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter.
Blame it on penalties, turnovers, or leaky offensive line, but honestly, the Ravens looked average throughout, at best. They are like a dull Swiss Army knife -- a lot of weapons but none dominant or effective.

So the Ravens get their first win of the season 28-25. Yea! Penalties, soft play late in the game, and lousy special teams almost doomed Baltimore. Also, our league leading star kicker seems to have jumped the shark, which is a big concern.

It started with Derrick Henry sprinting 87 yards on the first play of the game for a touchdown, and most importantly Baltimore maintained the lead. They had the chance to fold in the second half but rebounded quickly and dominated until the end. The Bills even pulled Josh Allen in the fourth quarter because he was getting nowhere.

Without watching some
Without watching some extended video it's hard to describe what went down in Cincinnati yesterday, but the NFL scribes are calling it the most exciting game of the season yet and it might be hard to beat. Talk about getting indigestion.
A 10 touchdown game, 9 of them passing. (The other touchdown was a run on the Raven's opening drive.) A true duel between Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. Ravens win in overtime 41-38!
The Ravens were down 38-28 with 8:54 to go in the fourth quarter and looked done for. But Lamar kept pulling rabbits outta his hat. (I seldom recommend that folks watch replays, but if ya like football, check out the clips of Lamar fumbling, recovering, evading, stiff-arming a defender, stiff-arming him again, running for broke and completing a pass into triple coverage -- all in one play. A sight to behold.)
A missed field goal in overtime (by the Bengals) gave Baltimore another last chance and they made theirs.
Ravens are now 3 and 2.

Ravens now at 4 and 2 after a win over the Washington Commanders (Redskins), 30-23, at M&T Bank Stadium Sunday. Battle of the Beltways.
A solid, steady Ravens offense controlled the game from start to finish. Nice change from all the recent nail-biters.
The duo of Lamar Jackson (323 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and Derrick Henry (24 carries, 132 yards, 2 TDs) cemented the win, along with the Ravens receivers who got open today and actually held on to the ball throughout the game. If the defense can improve, we will be playoff caliber.

Baltimore put on a pretty good show against Tampa Bay to win 41-31 on Monday Night Football. They are now 5 and 2 along with their division rivals, the Steelers.
After a rocky start the Raven's offense dominated the Buccaneers. Lamar's passing accuracy is improving each game and a wide variety of receivers are actually holding on to the ball. The running game, featuring Derrick Henry, is something to behold. It's a multi-threat offense.
However, the Raven's defense still proves leaky -- a few big plays saved the day. And the Ravens never seem too far off from losing the game in the last quarter. (The score was 34 - 10 Ravens in the third quarter and the Bucs scored three touchdowns in the fourth). It keeps games exciting for a spectator, that's for sure.
But I could do without the constant nail-biters and look forward to a more well balanced showing.

Baltimore cruised to a 41-10 victory over Denver. "When Baltimore's top-ranked offense plays like this, it's virtually unstoppable, even for a good defense" (the Broncos had the #3 ranked D before this game). The Ravens scored on seven straight drives. using their Swiss Army knife strategy -- Derrick Henry and Lamar set records....the rest of the receivers and other running back did great.. too. Even our fullback scored a touchdown.
And the Raven's still shaky defense redeemed themselves (today) -- a couple guys stepped up and made the crucial stops when needed.
This back-and-forth, up-and-down seesaw play is stressful. Exciting. Unpredictable. But quite stressful wondering just what version of the Ravens will show up this coming Thursday night against the Bengals.

Seems impossible for the
Seems impossible for the Ravens to fire on all cylinders at once. This time the defense did an adequate job, but the offense and special teams sputtered, resulting in an 18 to 16 loss to our longtime nemesis, the Pittsburg Steelers. Surprisingly, Baltimore's defense, the team's main weakness this season, did not allow a touchdown -- Pittsburg's 18 points came from 6 field goals.
Unfortunately, Baltimore's Justin Tucker, formerly the NFL's best kicker, seems to have lost his magic touch and squandered two "easy" field goals of his own. Add to that twelve penalties and three big turnovers, and the Ravens squandered the entire game. Too bad for them, as a win was within reach and would have left Baltimore in first place. The game was not even a usual cliffhanger -- it was boringly disappointing.
Thankfully, the food where I was was very satisfying.

One of the best kickers in the history of the NFL, Baltimore's Justin Tucker, seems to be in a lot more than a rut, and missed three important kicks. First time in his career. Unheard of to a Ravens fan. We needed those 7 points.
And Baltimore's offense always seemed like they were frantically struggling -- they didn't play deliberate, effective ball all day. Very scattered. No momentum. Plus, Lamar thinks he is Johnny Unitas now and loves to drop back in the pocket and throw into coverage. He looooooves to throw into coverage. And our guys don't' always catch it. Problem.
We did cut down on our penalties. I guess that's good. Now we go into a bye week (finally) followed by 3 games in 10 days! A Sunday > the following Sat > and then the next Wed.
Playoff contenders or playoff pretenders? This shaky play ain't gonna cut it.

Eagles still seem like paper
Eagles still seem like paper tigers (saying that as an eagles fan) although Barkley is a difference maker and I believe his desire to win is reverberating throughout the team. Giants were fools to let him walk but everyone knows that now. At the end of the day, Tucker hits those field goals and the Eagles lose. Ravens need to find a new kicker.

How does this even happen with highly paid pro athletes that have been playing the game for years? I don't even think it's all poor training / coaching.... I think these guys are often over-matched and impulsively doing it out of desperation.
Or maybe they are paid to throw the games?

More like another layer pealing away from the Chiefs/Mahomes soul that they clearly sold to the Devil. Fucking Mahomes. I'm already putting him ahead of just about everyone but Montana and Brady on The List, and unless he gets hurt he still has a long career ahead. Dude is fucking great and his team is incredibly difficult to beat. Good luck with that Alan.
>>>Who besides the Eagles should I worry about in NFC? Lion? Vikings? Packers?<<<
IMO it's the Lions year. They had the conference won last season, but their inexperience lead to them taking their foot off the gas in the 2nd half of the Championship Game. I don't see that happening again. They're using that gut punch as motivation and are playing like a team on a mission this year. They're not perfect, but I think they're taking all those life-long suffering Lions fans to their first Big Game this year.
The Eagles are good, but they don't pass very well and ultimately teams have to pass to win playoff games. Still, they're talented and they've been there before, which matters.
The Vikings have lots of talent and also have the playoff wild-card of excellent defense, but they rely so much on blitzing, and that usually bites teams in the playoffs. Plus, as well as Darnold has played this year, the pressure is different in the playoffs, and that pressure will be a ten-ton weight squarely on his shoulders.
The Packers, Buccaneers and NFC West are pretenders.
>>>Are the 49ers toast<<<
Yes. Early in the season they blew at least three games they had won, and two others they could/should have won, which sunk their ship. The easy answer is the massive number of injuries they suffered, which made a difference but every team deals with that. IMO they were physically and mentally burned out by multiple consecutive deep playoff runs, making it to four of the last five Championship Games and two Super Bowls, and suffering brutally heartbreaking losses in both SBs and two of the CGs. Super Bowl hangover is real.
Theoretically they could still win their division, and then I'd watch out for them, but they need to win all of their remaining games, including a Monday Night game against the Lions in Vanilla Stadium, and I'm betting the Lions have had that one circled all season, and they also need all three other teams in their division to collapse, which isn't going to happen.
So I'm betting on the Lions in the NFC, with the Vikings and the Eagles in the mix. In the AFC, how can anyone bet against the Chiefs? They have Mahomes, they have Reid, they have an excellent defense; they're in the the middle of a true dynasty.
The only question is, when does the warranty on their soul expire?

Also agree. My only hope is that the hissy fits the receivers are throwing right now will help right that ship. Is it play calling or is it Hurts? It's not the receivers. I keep thinking Hurts just isn't a super bowl QB. Hope to be proven wrong.

A sloppy, expected but needed
A sloppy, expected but needed win --- Ravens 35 over the Giants 14. This is the first of 3 games in 11 days and the next opponents are a lot tougher. Especially division leader Pittsburgh this coming Saturday.
Coming off the recent bye week proved refreshing health-wise, but execution-wise we still had 12 penalties! We gave away over 100 yards. Really? That's not gonna fly with the Steelers and the Texans.
Our multi-pronged offense played well today (Lamar had 290 passing yards / 5 passing touchdowns plus 65 rushing yards) and there were some notable plays by defense and special teams, but the latter two squads remain inconsistent. Thankfully our questionable kicker didn't have to attempt any field goals and hopefully improved his confidence with some successful extra points.
The overall impression is that the Ravens currently play with a touch of desperation -- which can be useful in underdog situations -- but they seldom display the confidence and total game control that championship quality teams exhibit. And there's just no excuse for all those penalties.
Even during a winning game they have fans shaking their heads.

Well, the Ravens are in the
Well, the Ravens are in the playoffs again! They beat their arch-rival Pittsburgh 34 - 17 yesterday in a much needed win psychologically. They finally didn't beat themselves with penalties, bad clock management or stupid plays. And luckily, they recovered the turnovers that they did inflict upon themselves when things got dicey.
It's now possible to take the division if the Steelers lose and we win in some combination. Which would give us home field advantage in some future game.
They didn't play an excellent game, but they played well-enough, plus. The run game was especially strong, our star kicker's one doink went in and he might have recovered his mojo (yet to be determined), and our defense played up to standard.
Our next game on XMas day, against Houston, is the third in 11 days and we seem to be peaking at the right time. If we can just avoid choking....
Overall, things are (like a strongman cheerleader) looking up.

Santa delivered the goods on
Santa delivered the goods on XMas day as the Ravens smothered the Texans 31 - 2, bringing their record to 11-5 with one game left. (The only good thing about playing on a Wed is that they gain a few extra days to recuperate before they close the season against the last place Browns.)
If only Baltimore could perform like they did yesterday for the rest of their playoff run. Offense, defense and special teams all played playoff caliber ball. They weren't flawless, but were firing on all cylinders in their third decisive win in 11 days, outscoring opponents 100-33 in the span. And during this Houston game Lamar surpassed Micheal Vick as the NFL’s all-time rushing leader among quarterbacks. Speaking of rushing, Derrick Henry proved once again he is a freaking human bulldozer.
Most importantly, the Ravens are relatively injury-free at this point in the season compared to most other teams.
Mr Claus and the rest of the Raven's fans are definitely eyeballing some more sweet treats in January.

FIrst playoff game and the
FIrst playoff game and the Ravens smashed their arch-rivals, the Steelers. Don't let the score (28-14) fool ya. A four part recipe for the win:
First of all - Lamar Jackson -- I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback successfully run five times in a row (when he didn't have to). On the first drive, too. By the game's end, Mr Slippery carried the ball 15 times for 81 yards. Just please don't get hurt! And his passing game was also spot on. 16-of-21 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Without our star receiver.
Second -- Derrick Henry. I'm not sure he's fully human. Half man half beast. Possibly a cyborg made from steam-roller parts. He can wear out any defense in close combat and still break open for long gain. He finished with 186 rushing yards including two touchdowns.
Third - The Ravens' defense was relentless. Our secondary (still the team's achilles heel) gave away two touchdowns in the third quarter, but everybody tightened up in the end.
Lastly - We avoided costly penalties and turnovers.
Special mention - the home field crowd. LOUD. Even on tv.
Things could turn upside down at any moment but if Baltimore can stay on this trajectory they are definitely headed to the SuperBowl.

Stats say defensive players get hurt more often than offensive players. At 180lbs being in an open field position, I don't know. Covering is one thing but when you are the last guy and Derrick Henry or DJ Metcalf need to be stopped they could blow your ass up. But then look how long Tyler Lockett has lasted... therein lies the different between being an offensive guy who can make an effort to avoid serious collisions and defensive guy who has to make contact to end the play. Sure respect such guys! Remember the Hawks guy Jamal Adam's. He was a bit bigger but so aggressive he just did himself in and couldn't stay healthy. Truly self-destructed. He didn't play smart at all.

I guess Fall is over. Winter is here. Drag. I did eat a lot of pretzels this season. I guess that's a good thing.
Ravens lose another playoff game (27 - 25) in a nerve-wracking competition where they interspersed impressive downfield charges and pretty decent defense with fatal mistakes --- penalties, turnovers, dropped balls, etc. -- and they never gained momentum. Opposite of how they played last week. No scary Lamar /Derick Henry duo play today. It seemed more disjointed. No flow. But they got so close to an overtime tie in the last minute. So close.
I have to make myself feel better and say the weather, specifically the ice, was a factor -- the Ravens rely on their fancy footwork or traction to evade tacklers and it was slippery out there.

There's nothing quite like
There's nothing quite like the excitement of a Championship Game. Super Bowls are epic, and your favorite team winning one is a lifetime experience, but Super Bowls are made for television, with way WAY too much baggage, distraction and fluff, while Championships Games are pure, intense, glorious sport.
Since I began following the 49ers in '74 I've been lucky to have seen them play in seventeen Conference Championships, winning eight, and I remember the games and buildup to every one vividly.

Any "favoring" for the Chiefs is a natural result of how in all sports continual greatness creates attention and focus and how those winning teams/players then take advantage of the breaks they get.
Every team gets good & bad luck in every game. The difference is, losing teams do nothing with the luck they get and people call them losers, while winning teams score touchdowns after a lucky break, and then the people cry "The fix is in!!!" when they do.
Bottom line is, winning teams take advantage of breaks, losing teams don't, which naturally creates the narrative, especially over time, that winning teams are favored.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are fucking great and are generational winners, and like all great teams when they get a break they usually take advantage of it, and because they do people notice it and don't like it.
So the Chiefs are great, a true dynasty, and so naturally now we hate them.
Overall it's fascinating to me how we sports fans always demand greatness, and then when we get it we look for any reason to devalue/despise it.
There's a larger tell in there somewhere.
In so many ways sports reveals the human condition.
As always, may the best team win.

Eagles area hot mess. Nick Siriani will be gone by the end of the season and we now know why Nick Saban shit canned Jalen Hurts as a starter at Alabama. Amazing how fast their Super Bowl window slammed shut.>>>>
Eagles need a qb - they would be unstoppable>>>>
Heard the Saint clip, also, once the game was out of reach, showed a pic of the Superdome while Cissy Strut was playing

Doh
Krab - I see what you did - and yes I'm thrilled with the game but a few things to consider.
4 turnovers - defense made a lot of those points happen. 7 rushing tds. I still think the eagles need a quarterback. One decent passing game against a middling defense. Imagine if they had someone who was consistently good. Like Lamar on this team would be unstoppable. Interesting comment by hurts that he feels he's been wearing a straight jacket all season and they finally freed him. We will see in the SB. Cheifs have a better defense but I think it comes down to two things - turnovers (did the eagles just blow their load) - and end of the game management - Chiefs historically better than Siriani who has made some questionable decisions in which games that shouldn't have been close were almost lost. Looking forward to the game. Should be a good one.

Right, Zang? Fuuuuuuuuuck
Two really skanky decisions from the refs. We had that interception and that first down.
Or am I just sore?
