Billy, Bobby & Mickey Remember Phil-CBS Sunday Morning

Forums:

Decent interview at the Great American Music Hall recorded five days after Phil passed:

Thanks

Interesting that Shappy was trying to do it all over again.

Also intriguing how much they talk over one another.

2025 - something will happen.

Amazingly sad again now

"Now it's different.  It's different."

Another good cry.  Rest In Peace, Phil!

TC, Donna, Ned Lagin, and Bruce are all still around.  David Grisman and David Nelson played on their records.  Next generation participants like Warren, Trey, Susan Tedeschi, Joan Osborne, Oteil, Jeff Chimenti, and Joe Russo could fill some of those spots.  Maybe a few of their affiliated younger friends; Billy Strings, Margo Price.  One shot deal.  Some place outdoors and not in a stadium; The Gorge, Red Rocks, Alpine.

So the plan for the 60th was going to be just the four of them with no lead guitar and no keys? I guess it would have been like the Bob and Phil acoustic shows.

There was internet chatter right after FTW about Shapiro having already booked Soldier Field for the 60th.

Would prefer something other than Soldier Field.   Let's go back to the roots.   Golden Gate Park.

Alos...odds on Mayer being involved?  100%?

It will be DeadCo w/ Billy.

My guess is no Mayer.

Probably why Bobby said "just the four of us."

I'd guess no Mayer

I had been thinking Bill was the next "shoe to drop", so to speak, but man, Mickey looks like shit. And Bill is looking a little healthier these days.

Personally don't care if they do a 60th; without lots of rehearsal they'll be worse than D&C, which is just "pretty OK" most of the time. Phil was basically music director for FTW, and without him it will probably be garbage. I hope each of these guys just keeps doing their own thing, because both Bobby and Mickey (at least) have had great projects over the last few years.

I think it would be better if they hosted a tribute show with the 3 sitting in at various points while the various bands/artists performed ala Willie's 90th and paid tribute. Then a fun few encores together

>>>So the plan for the 60th was going to be just the four of them with no lead guitar and no keys<<<

I seriously doubt that. It sounded much more that they were going to meet to kick the tires, see if they could stand being in the same room again, discuss how they wanted to handle these silly upcoming "honors" events and discuss/argue with Phil about a possible 60th event/s in the summer, something I personally think Phil would have said no to.

Would the other three have done something big without Phil if he were still kicking and playing six months from now? I think it would have been a little weird but they probably would have, but now the doors are wide open for a big deal and if the other three are still able to get onto a stage in six months it's almost certain that something will happen this summer, and it makes the most sense that the surrounding band will be most or all of D&C.

I don't see why Mayer wouldn't want to do it, he clearly loves the Grateful Dead, the vast majority of dead heads old & young love him, and there will be big pressure on him to do it, because if the band is basically Dead & Co. under a different name the interest and money involved will be absolutely massive.

They could easily do a stadium tour and/or another extended run at the Big Movie Theater in Vegas and sell every single ticket, no matter the price.

If for whatever reason Mayer isn't involved interest will still be big and a one-off set of shows in one or two venues similar to Fare Thee Well would be likely, but Dead & Co. with John Mayer is IMMENSELY popular, numbers wise maybe more popular than the GD were at their most popular, and that group with Mayer, playing under the banner of "A 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Grateful Dead!" would be certain to sell as many very expensive tickets to as many shows as they decided to play.

And at this very late/final stage of the original band, I think that's far out.

LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!

Is Billy up to an extended run at this point? Seems like he'd be better off with a short run of shows, if that.

>>>is Billy up to an extended run at this point<<<

I doubt it, but even if his spirit (and pocketbook) is willing, I personally think his playing has diminished dramatically (I think Mayer probably agrees with me) which is why Jay Lane will likely be involved no matter what they end up doing.

But I was more saying that with Mayer aboard they COULD do as many shows as they wanted, not that a full tour is necessarily likely. But then it's amazing how persuasive multiple zeroes in a bank account can be, especially when Irving Azoff is involved. And if Mayer is involved Azoff will be too.

I'd imagine more realistically it will be similar to Fare Thee Well, and if Mayer is on guitar then maybe sets of shows in two or three markets and also very possibly another run in Vegas in the giant ball, and the shows will sell out fast.

If they do it more like they did that last Mexico run with rotating guitar players then I think a set of anniversary shows would still do well, but not the guaranteed slam-dunk if Mayernaise is the lead, and they probably wouldn't play as many shows.

And for the guaranteed money The Three will certainly demand with or without Mayer, a slam-dunk is absolutely what the promoters will be pushing for.

Clearly Billy was ready to talk and Bob was ready to say not yet

What a long strange trip indeed...

^ snoozefest

How bout something new and different and cutting edge? Replace Jerry and Phil with robots.

(they can make even more money that way, since that seems to be the motivation these days)

better yet --- break out the Touch of Gray video puppets

ok, ok, another idea --

Announce, "we've made enough money thru the years, beyond our wildest expectations, and in the spirit of the Diggers feeding the hungry, we are going to have a food drive "free" show in GG park -- just bring a can of food or two to donate to get in."

Then follow the Hardly Strictly model -- different cover bands on each stage throughout the day and the core three (plus Donna and Bruce) show up randomly to play.

I miss Phil.

All the best to the Lesh family, on what has to be a pretty heavy Thanksgiving.....

Take care you guys.

We're here, not going away......

the vast majority of dead heads old & young love him<<

Yeah. No.

Not here either.

I hadn't watched it yet. youtube link is gone now, but I was still able to watch it here:

Maybe it's the way they edited it down, but Billy seems like a dick. Needing to get first word in a lot.
