i love weed and i love music but TBH i dont think ive ever heard a song about weed i actually enjoy. 100% of them are just corny cringe-fests. lots of good songs out there about psychedelics and opiates, but i genuinely cant think of a single good weed song. the worst ATM is that rap group "mendo dope". what a bunch of jokers
"Carmelita, hold me tighter, I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin, on the outskirts of town"
idk if id really consider panama red a song thats truly about weed. its about the story of a character who happens to be named after a strain of cannabis, but cannabis is never mentioned or alluded to. the closest thing to actually mentioning a drug in that song is the white horse mescalito.
Saw the John Dawson trio version at a bar in Missoula in the early 1990s. Right as they went on stage, I yelled "Henry" and blew a big cloud of ganja smoke on to the stage. Marmaduke smiled and broke into Henry.
ran across this mention when bouncing around the web today (when reading about the New Delhi River Band):
"In 1967, The Rainy Daze had had a surprise AM pop hit with the song "Acapulco Gold." It was a catchy tune, and once public scolds discovered what the lyric of the chorus actually implied-- "Old dogs can learn new tricks/When the streets are lined with bricks/Of Acapulco Gold,"-- the record was banned in many cities. Producer Dave Diamond could hardly have been happier, since nothing improves record sales like the banning of a scandalous record. Diamond claims that to this day "Acapulco Gold" was the best selling single in the history of San Francisco, and he could very well be right. Carter and Gilbert went on to write the song "Incense And Peppermints," and Diamond found a Santa Barbara area group called The Strawberry Alarm Clock, and they had another huge hit."
This 9-minute film was directed and produced by Paul McCartney in 1995, created from photos of the Grateful Dead taken by Linda McCartney in Central Park, NYC and at 710 Ashbury in SF in 1968.
