To be a little more clear; it's not really a "contest". I mean participation is by invitation, and the contestants themselves vote for the mens and women's "winner". There are no prizes or trophies or endorsements like there would normally be in a big surf comp.
This event only happens if and when conditions are just right, and especially huge in Waimea Bay. It can happen in back to back years or it can be a decade or more in between events. The purpose of this really is to celebrate the life of Eddie Aikau; his contributions to surfing, to his community, and his larger than life example of the quintissential Hawaiian waterman.
Eddie was hired to be the first lifeguard ever in Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu. He saved more than 500 swimmers during his years there, with not a single life ever lost under his charge. Eddie's life was ultimately claimed by the sea in the Kalohi Channel at age 31 while trying to save his friends from a boating accident aboard the sailing vessel Hokuleia.
Yes, some heart-stopping drops, but then it's just going straight under the white water and see if you come out. Still more than I would ever be comfortable in.
The spot has changed over the years, possibly because of sand being dredged. When I first saw video of Waimea in the early sixties it was a real wave with some length to it.

As far as commentary goes, it is one of the few sports where nature and athlete are in a dance of forces.... to analyze after 4:20.
