Masters of the Telecaster, ft GE Smith, Jim Weider, and Larry Campbell

Jan 24, 2025  - The Baby Grand, Wilmington, DE

(refreshing to see live music not related to Grateful Dead, though Weider did play in Ratdog and Campbell with Phil, and Smith has some Jerry connections)

GE Jerry story when he was playing with Dylan:

"One time we were playing Oakland, California and Jerry Garcia and Bob were friends, of course, and Jerry would show up backstage every once in a while. He wouldn’t come out and play but backstage and he’d bring a guitar and him and Bob would sit there and try to outdo each other with the greatest, weirdest old folk song that no one had ever heard. Jerry would do one about this girl falls in the river and her skeleton washes up and they make a fiddle out of her bones. Then Bob would do this song “look at these tired old working hands,” whatever the song was. So one time Jerry comes and he does one of his songs which usually the way we all know it is usually kind of a nice bouncy thing. You hear the guitar and you like it, but he does it really slow. This was after he had a heart attack or a stroke or something and his left hand shook, so when he played it had this wonderful vibrato. This wonderful shaking of the note which we try years to do and he could do it, always could do it, but now he’s got this wonderful built-in … every note he plays is just gorgeous. So I told Jeff about this style of doing it, so we ex-propriated it."

They are all super players

Anyone remember when GE Smith was in Moonalice?

>>>Anyone remember when GE Smith was in Moonalice? <<<

yeah that lasted about five minutes

he thought it was his band

looks like a fun time Alan! Good players for sure.

Oh my god to have been there soaking in a Dylan v Garcia obscure song battle. It boggles the mind cheeky

I wonder if that Oakland show GE mentioned was an early Bridge School benefit that both Dylan and Jerry played. I thought Dylan with GE Smith was fantastic and acoustic Billy Idol stole the show. Overall incredible night of music.

I think I last saw GE with Roger Waters of all places.....loved him with Dylan

>yeah that lasted about five minutes  he thought it was his band<

oh yeah I remember thinking that, too. Too funny.

Yeah it was a good show -- very relaxed and unpretentious with some impressively dexterous playing. A little high end (frequency-wise) -- I can see why the Telecaster was valued for it's ability to cut through the sounds of a band. (I kept reminiscing about of the Commander Cody / Bill Kirchen signature sound.) Encore was a salute to Garth Hudson.

Love GE. What a career.

I thought his Dylan stint was excellent. The Radio City run was superb.

Super tasty in Roger's band as well.

Wasn't it still called the Flying Other Brothers?

I always liked GE as band leader on Sat Night Live.

>>>Jerry would do one about this girl falls in the river and her skeleton washes up and they make a fiddle out of her bones.

No, it was a murder, her sister killed her.

No one, and I mean no one, does "Dreadful Wind and Rain" better than Old Man Garcia.

None more sad.

I agree 100% although there are some great ones out there in the songs history....

apparently it won't embed the last part ^^

one of the great ones imho:

Loreena Mckennit

Heard Loreena at Constitution Hall, so fine.  Also, the witches were out in force...a strange and wonderful vibe that night.  Great band too.

Did you know she is an honorary colonel in the Canadian Air Force?

Edit: she stepped down last year.

Her lead guitarist, Brian Hughes, lost everything in the recent fires in LA

Looks like fun!  The GE Smith Grateful Dead connection is with the band Great Caesars Ghost.  From what I know is Ge would do shows with them; but was not an actual member of the band.  They played mostly in the North East and where I saw them two times was on Long Island.  Both shows had Ge sitting in for the full two sets.  The songs were almost exclusively Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers.  Here's a YouTube link to a live recording they released;  including GE Smith.  That band could really bring the goods!
