Yes, starfish - hi - there is hope for optimism for the future. What you have described is one full loop of cultural history. The 50s were rough, but the counter-culture won by the end of the 60s. That put the conservative reaction in motion. They flipped the script with Reagan and have been conservative every since - even Clinton and Obama. This is Neoliberalism and it's about to turn back all the rights and laws the god damned hippy pinko commies won back in the 60s. They fucking won. Even the klan! They cannot believe it. It's how Bills Fans will feel soon as well. But okay, here we are. What's next?

Well, we know where we are. We were winning, they fought back hard, they won. How did they do that? By nurturing the religious zealots through the televangelists. Well, we need somma that. We need working class solidarity. How do we win them back? THAT'S the question. And knowing that question is key. History is our hope. It is now time for another counter-cultural moment. Luckily, time travel - at least to the past - is impossible.

Let's say you go to the past and intentionally or not, do something that keeps you from being born. How could you go to the past if you were never born? 

We won and now there is a backlash is really one of the most under reported stories out there, but we can't go back and start over because they didn't view the counter culture as a threat back then and they sure do now. 

I also think that this phrase dominates the culture today. "The pace of change has never been this fast, yet it will never be this slow again." I think a lot of people want to just slow shit down, but climate change and AI aren't going to slow down for anyone. They are just going to run people over, and we are going to have choose from a lot of bad choices. People have just completely lost the ability to choose the best choice between two bad choices. 

Ooo, my, you humble me, starfish. Gosh. But it's all true, just focus on a longer view of culture and history. Intellectual history I mean, the history of ideas, what the kids call memes these days. It's a diachronic rather than synchronic view, the long view, not a current bubble. Studying that stuff and keeping it in mind as I read and go through my day has certainly given me a lot of hope about the present and coming future. Overall, Democracy is beating Aristocracy, but they have us on the ropes. It's okay. We knew they'd lash out when their world view was taken down a few pegs, no longer the common sense of the day. They've had control pretty much forever. The Patriarchy in the Judeo of Judeo-Christian is thousands of years strong. Progressive changes have upset that long-standing order, so yeah, they'll defend. We could see this coming back in high school. They beat that Shepherd boy and hung him on a fence to die. But even so, gay culture was on the rise, and it wasn't going away. We talked of a day when all the weirdos tried to get their rights, and how hard the status quo would push back. Well, here we are. History is on our side. The religious zealot lovers of that wacky abusive Joe god and of old Mammon himself cannot claim final victory. Right? Now fight!!!!

Not start over, Niño, adapt and continue. We know history. We're being very unimaginative when it comes to getting the working class united. Maybe we should treat politics like sports. Statistically, we're killing them. They understand the team sport view. Use it. ...por ejemplo.

Also qua slowing down. People can still pretty much choose the pace of their lives, but even if not, it's security that we all need. Imo it's not running around that's hard so much as doing it for nothing, and then the added fear of debt in all it's forms. Security in the form of  single-payer health care, abundant housing, a living wage, etc., will bring that relief.

Re: time ravel - experiencing genetic memories from the past is certainly possible, but becoming an actor in a past human drama and having it affect or not affect the present is still impossible - IMO.

Alan... isn't the entire endeavor itself paradoxical? But what is paradox? Is it just an event that defies logic, or is it the label we put on events that can't happen ever because the elements of the event contradict each other?

So McFly faded away because his parents didn't meet. Right? Element 1 is those two needed to frak. Element 2 is they didn't. Thus, no Marty. In its own context, that makes sense. Just that one example is nothing. How many things will you change throughout your time there. Paradox exists here.

So where would it not exist? ...if paradox is only a confounded logic. Right? We confound logic all the time. But that doesn't seem satisfying enough. Hmmm...I cannot see a situation where there'd be no paradox, the real one.

I do see a cosmic pool table break and scattering of random elements. Going back in time would change the natural flow of those elements. You're a new element. This is not disrupting fate, really, but you could look at it that way. The elements were supposed to scatter this way, but a new element from outside the context made em go that way.

Soooo... there's no paradox in the new timeline; it's just the way it always was. But that still ignores the original timeliness, the original way things should have gone (avoiding the word Fate here). Right?

Time Travel is an interesting theme in literature at least as far back as H. G. Wells' 1895 novel "The Time Machine."

The work is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle or device to travel purposely and selectively forward or backward through time. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now almost universally used to refer to such a vehicle or device.

I like your view on this starfish. Thank you, and with ayahuasca there's so much more than patterns.  No two ceremonies are ever the same, and for many, including myself, each ceremony is a progression in learning about what seems like endless dimensions, and learning to use the unique energy of the individual plants we diet to help people heal.

to be clear, surf, i pretty much agree with you, and in no manner would i want to be responsible for the ripple effect caused by that possibility. But i  prefer highly improbable, rather than impossible.  I've seen a bit too much in the past year to say impossible....lol ;)

In the Garden of Iden is a 1997 science fiction novel by American writer Kage Baker.

This novel is the first in a series about "The Company" and its servants, human and otherwise. 

The story is told by Mendoza, a cyborg botanist. In the introduction, she describes a 24th-century organization called "Dr. Zeus Inc." or simply "The Company". The Company has the secrets of immortality and time travel. Unfortunately the immortality treatment can only be used on young children; and time travel is difficult, expensive, and only possible when going into the past and returning to your own time. History cannot be changed.

Dr. Zeus uses the technology simply to get rich. By traveling far into prehistory, the company creates its own immortal cyborg agents, who then have the mission of preserving cultural artifacts and other valuable items for sale in the 24th century. Usually these items are hidden in safe places, but in the case of extinct species, for instance, they are kept in secret Company caches run by the cyborgs. In the 24th century the Company then 'finds' the long-lost objects and sells them.

But they are willfully trying to shove the relatively resplendently Rainbow-colored 21st Century back into a 1950's toothpaste tube, and making a shit show of everything. I've not read Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, the title of which I've come to learn is now usually translated as In Search of Lost Time, but ran across the above passage while doing some research for a piece of writing I'm doing on involuntary memory. The page above seems to be a key to the whole thing. I've read it a number of times now, and there's sense to be had there, but it's a slippery kind. My take on it right now is that we can slip out of the grip of Time at times, but any traveling we do is not the product of conscious intent.
