Anyone have experience and/or opinions on home air purifiers?

Do the things work?

There are small, cheap ones and large expensive ones. Are these things total scams, do they make minor improvements or do they really do what they say they do?

I'm not the most dedicated house cleaner/duster, and am always looking for shortcuts.

Thoughts?

Do they work? Yes! I got mine in 2020 during the nearby wildfires. I had to wear a mask, even in the house, until I got the Winix Model 6300-2 Air Cleaner. I use it a lot because I am so sensitive to fragrances and also to dust. Sadly, my house is always dusty since I'm not the most dedicated cleaner/duster, either. When people who have a fragrance on come in, the air cleaner helps.

It has 3 filters. The first 1 (pre-filter) is easily cleanable and reusable. The amount of dust that collects on it is astounding to me. I try to clean it once a month but it's sometimes longer between cleaning. The second filter is odor-absorbing carbon filter (a stiff sort of black foam). The innermost is a "True" HEPA filter. I didn't replace the HEPA filter for almost 4 years, I just didn't think of it.
The unit comes with 4 replacement black foam filters and you can order replacement HEPA filters. I have a backup now. There is a "check filter indicator". After replacing the filters you can reset a button that comes on if it thinks there's a reason. Mine has never come on.

It works surprisingly well. There are 4 set fan speeds, and 1 "Auto" that goes from low to high depending on what it senses. There's a color bar that lets you know the quality of the air. There's also an odor sensor. AND a remote! I never use it, but I have it.

I don't remember what it cost because my sister sent it to me as a gift. I think they're available at a number of places I like to avoid for political reasons, like Amazon and Home Depot. It would be worth breaking the line for cleaner air.

Lance, these have been tested in laboratory settings, hospital settings and public areas. They results are available online. I have three of guardian air units and a couple of the smaller pure and clean.

They are used by several professional sports organizations, hospitals, schools, public buildings, etc.

They have portable units and units for hvac systems.

Stay far away from any filter that has UV light which in turn makes man made ozone that is very bad for ones health.HEAVILY linked to breast cancer.

We have the same one as judit. It's great.

The filters are a little expensive, but when you see how caked they are when needing replacement the benefit of the machine is obvious.

i tried a few to reduce visiblt dust in rural cabins and they did not work for that. sounds like they work fine for allergens and common household dust  but it did not reducethe huge amount of visibledust present in my cabin that comes from just living in a dusty place next to a dusty farm road.

Exactly.  We live in an older dusty house and have a big one going in our bedroom 24/7.   And yes, clean and check the filters regularly.

And ozone machines too.  Those things are hazardous.

They work the best, just use them for short periods, don't stay in the room and air it out after.  Nothing else works as good as ozone generator.
