NEDERLAND -- On Saturday night, March 15th, KGNU Radio is presenting a Grateful Dead Special from 7pm to Midnight.  According to long time Dead show DJ Mike Massa, this show will be a special one.  “I’m excited, because the radio show is falling on the very night of Phil Lesh’s 85th birthday.  We’re putting together a Phil tribute and will be playing a lot of high quality, bass-driven Dead tunes that you are sure to enjoy.”  Phil Lesh, the bass player of the Grateful Dead, passed away last October at the age of 84.

Massa, who with Eugene D’Alessandro ran pirate station RadioFreeNed from 1994 to 2002 out of their office in town, started deejaying Grateful Dead radio specials at KGNU over 40 years ago.  “In those days the show was 12 hours long, from 6pm to 6am”, he says.  “The normal guys would handle the 6pm to midnight segment, and then me and my crew of Nederland hippies would take over and play Dead from midnight to 6am.  It’s amazing to me they let us do that!  KGNU is an awesome place”.  The Grateful Dead Special is part of KGNU’s Spring pledge drive, and Massa hopes you will call in during the show and contribute to locally sourced independent media.  “All kidding aside, KGNU is an incredibly important resource for Boulder County, and we are very fortunate to have this independent media access to local news, music, and information.”

Join Mike and his co-host Chris O’Riley Saturday night, March 15th for the Grateful Dead Special on KGNU.  KGNU broadcasts at 88.5 FM in Boulder, 93.7 FM in Nederland, and online at KGNU.org.

Have a great time

KTVU news footage from c1966 with Claud Mann reporting at an "LSD Lovefest", including views of people having fun in a park, listening to jazz music and of an interview, in which a spokesman attempts to answer the question "what are you trying to prove." Also features scenes of people dancing, of Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead having a beer and of a young man goofing off for the camera, wearing a sign which reads: "LSD SAVES." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

The man being interviewed here is also interviewed in a KRON newsfilm clip shot on 12/17/1966 in the Haight Ashbury, where he is encouraging people to enjoy the moment. If anyone can positively identify him, please let us know.

Great link, Alan. They've got some short clips of the GD playing in the park too.

Phil has always had the best hair

So emotional. I was right behind levon and Grahame when they pulled the string and in true GD fashion it didn't work so someone else yanked it off

I was so hysterical some guy from channel 5 whatever that is interviewed me about what this all meant to me I'm just sad I didn't mention organ donation

If Tommy's here I hope I sure see him/ you in 3D

also I need a miracle

Levon was the one to pull it and then after that he was in the fire truck at the top in a tie-dye fire helmet that someone said Phil wore

I can't post pictures but hopefully someone will #tommy

In honor of Phil Lesh, I encourage you all to listen to some good music.

I'm starting the day listening to the latest Good' Ol Dead podcast with the latest episode dedicated to Phil and plan to end the day listening to Crippled But Free close out a St. Patricks day street party in New Cumberland PA.

This thread begins this March 15 for me in tears. I love Phil and love all of us.

Phil was a rock star. Every Zoner is a rock star!

Happy Phil Day! Happy Phil Day! Happy Phil Day! Happy Phil Day! Happy Phil Day!

(((((Phil)))))

Did anyone catch the stop hand on the crosswalk sign? They cut the middle finger down so it looks like Jerry's. Maybe that's old news, but I just noticed it in a video I watched of the unveiling.

Gutt, you must have been 5' in n front of my brother. His pics are from virtually the same angle, only you were closer.

The hand is permanently like that now.

This show it's hard.

I am feeling the loss and the hole and void pretty deep.

The music is good tho

Jill, the loss is like that, deep and recurring and shitty. It hurts and I'm sorry. It's just that way.

Be as good to yourself as you can be...

It's the wheel Jill. It never stops turning, and while that often hurts it's also far out.

As Wavy Gravy says, it's GOOD grief!

Love the fact that you get to be there experiencing these moments, and have experienced so, so many others.

With more to come?

Oh, we lucky few.

I didn't mean that it's all that way, but when it is, it is.

And what Lance said.

Then this must be the best grief ever

The way I see it is the height of the hurt tends to be roughly equivalent to the depth of one's affection.
