Show Demographics

Forums:

Always find it interesting to go to show and noticing the demographics.   Just did a three night run of Billy Strings and have to say it was both the least and most diverse crowds at a show ever.

Least diverse in terms of racial composition.  All white.  Lily white.   Common for jam bands for sure, but at most shows you usually get a black guy or two (there was at least one black dude at WSP run the previous week).   But other than venue staff, there was not a single person of color in the entire crowd last couple nights.

Age and gender wise though, these shows were diverse.  Pretty even match of male and female and the age range was all over the chart.   From babies, to teenagers, to the elderly and everything in between.  And so many young hippie kids.   The hallways were jam packed with young dancing hippies with their shoes piled in the corner just like the days of old.  Really wild.

That's just Florida.  If you were back in the PNW the crowd would be marbled.  At Dawg's 80th birthday show at the Moore, there was a similar wide-range of ages (the Billy effect), and Latino, Asian, and Black representation.  It's a good thing.   The tribe is reforming as the Hippie ethos is being revisited and reevaluated.

ive never really seen truly diverse demographics at any jamband show in CA except for one - particle in SF, i think at the great american. the show was poorly sold overall but there were a bunch of people there who just looked like average nightclub attendees going out to dance, all dressed up and made up in stylish nightclub attire, lots of different ethnicities, but the weird part was more just their whole style and vibe seemed so out of place at a jamband sort of show. i was really wondering how these folks got introduced to particle, and what led them to the show...but at the end of the day if you want to dance to electronic music and particle is in town you really cant do much better, but still, IME its rare for jamband shows to have a crowd like that in general.

sausage fest is my usual observation

Trey brought out the chicks

Victor RIP was a brother and we went to a shit ton of Dead shows, a shit ton

He would always tell me, You white folks sure take some good drugs and dance

And to think the Pacific Northwest was pretty much created for racists.

It's always 99.9% white I imagine everywhere for these kinds of bands.

And 92% sausage, except for dragged along chicks on dates and maybe 5% percent women who care about the music

Sounds like trump's dream for the country

We  don't normally go to a social gathering or shows to count black dudes, or "brothers".  That must be a progressive thing.

On the floor for Phish last night in Seattle.  Overwhelming white and more dudes than ladies. Probably a 60-40 ratio.

As the floor started to fill in before the show, an older Japanese couple came in and were standing near us.  By the way they were dressed, they seriously looked like they got separated from their tour group and accidentally ended up at a Phish show.  Short time later, I overheard a younger guy talking with couple explaining how he loved visiting Japan, saw Galactic there, and was glad to see they could catch a show during their visit to America.  The older guy then explained he was from California, goes to a lot of shows, and understood why they might be mistaken for tourists from Japan.  When the music started, they were dancing and grooving with the best of them.
