Met Ace standing at the bar at a Hubert Sumlin tribute at B B King's in NYC. Asked him if he was playing. He said he was just there to enjoy the show.
Told him I spent all my paper route money on Kiss stuff when I was a kid. He said thanks, what are you drinking? The least I can do is buy you a drink. Cool dude.
I was never a Kiss Fan, and never seen them live, but my brother in-law did take me to an Ace Show at HOB in Orlando. Glad I went and it was a pretty good show. I was actually surprised I liked it as much as I did.
Ace was still playing little theaters while Gene and Paul were humping around the bloated Kiss Farewell act. Ace was stiil into it for the music. Similar to Phil's relationship to Dead & Co.
Watch your step folks and try not to trip and fall. The noggin is a fragile thing.
It's kind of funny. The standard line was always "KISS sucks" around the music scene I grew up around, which is mostly kind of true, at least musically (although the Replacements cover of "Black Diamond" helped restore some cred in the Alternative world).
Ace was alright though. He looked the coolest, and didn't come off as a blood-drooling perv like Gene, a preening groomer like Paul, or a limp "Beth"-singing Cat-man like Peter. His "Back In The New York Groove" was the only Top 40 hit on any of their solo albums.
I think side 1 on Kiss Alive is great for Kiss. Got to Choose is my favorite.
Ace was the coolest Kiss guy. They were washed up by the time he was kicked out or left the band. They really never had that Kiss feel after he was gone I thought. It was also the 80s and their clothes were glowing in the dark. lol
