Has anyone been to a show there? How is access in and out? Acoustics? Any tips on getting in and out of town quickly from there? Easy access from Penn?
Micky Hart has a significant connection with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC; performing there for various spiritual and musical events, notably the 1988 Tibetan Buddhist festival with Philip Glass and the Kitaro (Gyuto Monks), and the annual Winter Solstice Celebrations, including a 1999 performance featured on the Solstice Gems album.
Architecturally, the place is fascinating.
Getting there is easy. IRT 2 train from Penn Station to 96th street. From there take the IRT # 1 train to 110th street. Walk east one block, from Broadway to Amsterdam, then uptown two blocks. The church a big place. Access is also easy.
The Micky 1988 show was way different then other Dead related adventures. Micky shows will do that, then some. Enjoy.

Made it to that one^^
If you can go a little early and you don't get frustrated, Had success with street parking. Start circling the blocks between West End and Amsterdam, begin at 100 and work your way up.
I was also at the 1988 Tibetan Buddhist festival with Philip Glass and the Kitaro (Gyuto Monks) with Mickey. Very cool to see. The cathedral is awesome. It's the world's largest Gothic cathedral and is still not completed despite construction starting in 1892. It's worth checking out when nothing is going on there.
It's been a few years since I was there. It's the largest Cathedral in NYC. On street parking was generally easy north of 110th Street, but that may have changed. You may need to circle the block a few times. I doubt you'll need to go west of Broadway to park or too far from from Amsterdam Ave. If you're there during the day and the Hungarian Pastry shop is open, it is right across the street, it's worth stopping in and getting some sweets. This is one of the best places to visit in the Columbia U. area.
Iy is one of the most glorious Cathedrals on Earth. It is a really cool Multi/Non-Denominational Churches I've ever been to.

It's worth noting that the original lineup for the 1988 Tibetan Monk appearance included Miles Davis, but sadly he fell ill and Kitaro stepped in, and he did not disappoint! A lot of people said it was like a PInk Floyd experience, between Kitaro, Mickey Hart and Phillip Glass. Amaing Night!

I was there several times years ago to see Paul Winter's sunrise concerts. We drove in, so not much help there.
But is is an amazing piece of architecture with stupendous acoustics...... lots of gold & marble for the music to bounce off of
