The Capitol Theatre

Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Dead’s landmark acoustic live album Reckoning, Welch and Rawlings will perform full sets drawn from the album alongside other classic Grateful Dead songs. With their inimitable guitar interplay and incomparable harmonies, they bring these songs to life in a way only they can. Reckoning marked The Grateful Dead’s return to their folk and bluegrass roots…Roots that have long inspired Welch and Rawlings, who now pay tribute in their own unmistakable voice.

The only downside to this is if they don't include any of their own incredible body of work but this  probably would have selling power in a bit more extensive tour. Closer and I'd go

It's cool they are playing the Saenger as it was one of the three places the Grateful Dead played these acoustic sets, with the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall being the other two.

We know it will be beautiful, soulful and on point heart

booked the Saenger opening night of jazzfest

it should sell out

Presale on now!

in on floor for friday fox theatre show!

Thanks so much for those links, Krab. Loves me some Gillian and David.

For the ever shrinking Bay Area black screen crowd, they're also playing the awesome little Quarry Amphitheatre on the UC Santa Cruz campus on April 19th.

That place is a great venue that they just renovated and started using for touring acts a year or two ago. Surrounded by redwoods, capacity is around 2,000 but it feels smaller. Either way, it's a WAY better venue for this show than the Oakland Fox.

saw my daughter graduate at the SC quarry. that show will be sick and people should go.

I watched video of the show and that was some really good Grateful Dead music.

It's weird but the older I get, the less i want to hear others playing GD music. I'll check the stream out tonight

Well, the good news is we can plug in the Grateful Dead and listen to them any time we want.

Me too...

fishcane and Astro, I felt the same way going into this show, stating that I'd rather hear Gillian & David's original material. However, I found their performances and interpretations to be quite compelling and sublime. There were several times you could hear a pin drop in the large Capitol Theatre crowd. There was nothing 'cloney' or rote about this show. I walked out feeling inspired by Gillian & David and a renewed respect for the versatility and resilience of the Hunter/Garcia and other Grateful Dead repertoire.

A Beautiful performance!

(Nugs can verify!)

I checked some out. Leaves me flat. Well played and lovely as only they can do but for some reason I eyeroll at even an occasional random GD cover anymore

I'm with fish

just not my flavor of licorice

Easy Wind- I am very familiar with their original material. Saw them many times in the 90s-early 2000s. Even front row in a tiny venue. To the point, I was getting bored because of the lack of fresh material. I'll check it out on Nugz because I know if they find the muse it could work for me. Somebody plug in for one of the later sets when they tighten up. I'm a tough sell I'll admit.

I'm loving the stream.  That Santa Cruz show would be the tits.

I love how the crowd still cheers at all the obligatory places no matter who is playing, "why don't you arrest me" etc..

that's pretty much the same

for any legacy band song, right

iron maiden etc...

you've seen a lot of legacy bands

is it really that weird

entertainment, maaaaan

Said I love it, where do I say it's weird. But I've never seen an Iron Maiden tribute so I'll take your word on that one

oh, there's some good ones

don't have to pay vip prices either

I'd certainly hope not, GA pit for Maiden proper is still in the 150$ range(at least that's what I paid for Montreal and Hershey)

rock on man

I watched the Nugs. Not particularly impressed. Left me feeling lucky I caught them in the nineties. I'm disappointed they have not knuckled down and written more original material or dug up worthy old time songs. But I was saying that 20+ years ago.

"Another picky deadhead."

The Zone has always been full of them, god bless us.

What's Ryan Adams doing these days?

Maybe it's picky, and don't get me wrong, of course it's pleasant listening but I don’t really find these takes as particularly "fresh”  or “new,” as others are  finding them. Sure it’s decent, well performed and sung. But it sounds exactly how a fan of Welch/Rawlings and the GD would think they would sound. There was no “oh wow” for me… And everything I heard was performed in exactly the vein in which the catalog and traditional songbook was interpreted before the advent of the “jamband” scene and moniker was coined. Sure was a bit fun, would have been special as a one off imho.

I'm far worse than picky.

People say opinions are like assholes

But I disagree

I have many opinions

Stunning show last night at the Fox. Ansolutely tpo shelf!
