Appreciate your sincere response Slickrock.  I also struggle with my response to perceived evils and wrongdoing.  We're all human after all, in a neverending dance with the darkness and light that surrounds us.

It just feels wrong to me to kick someone when they're down.  My parents got increasingly conservative and brainwashed by right wing media as they hit the homestretch in their 80s.  My siblings and I didn't stop loving and caring for them, nor attempting to have rational discussions with them about their views.  Those actually produced a few positive breakthroughs.  
 

The hyper-polarization between the Left and the Right is unhealthy for everyone.  Remember Max Yasgur's speech at Woodstock ("I'm a  farmer..."), or as Neil Young wrote, "Hate is everything you think it is.  Love and only love will see you through."

I don't think he can vote from a rehab center (???). If Beshear was to appoint someone, he'd be forced to appoint a rethuglican replacement. 

With important votes coming up, his absence may be a good thing for Dems. It's also not a good look for rethuglicans to be propping up a near corpse and playing secretive games at this point before the midterms.
