Terri Lyne carrington?

Forums:

So I purchased a ticket to see the Wayne shorter quartet in April and was bummed out to see she is going to b subbing for Brian blade at these sf gigs.

she has a really impressive resume and apparently has even subbed for blade in this quartet before, but I don't know.

looks like blade is gonna b with Joshua redman in sf in late March and his fellowship group has started being a little active again (see my thread in music talk) but what gives?

I kinda feel like he's irreplaceable in the shorter group context, but am I just overreacting?

anyone familiar with ms. Carrington's work?

am I just not giving her a fair chance?

lance, u out there?

Tell me everything is gonna b ok!

I'm sitting with my mom in an ICU right now, and this news just made my day worse.

Thanks a lot E.

I spent some serious dough on those shows, and I agree with the "irreplaceable" bit, although of course especially when you're in a place like this you realize we're ALL replaceable.

I've never heard of this woman, but I have to admit to having a pessimistic attitude in general when it comes to women drummers, so I can't say it will all be OK.

I will do my best to go in with an open mind, and Shorter never plays with anyone but the very best, but the WSQ isn't like most groups, and Blade isn't someone that can just be replaced in that wide open, free-form improv style they play.

On the other hand, the first incarnation of the SFJazz Collective had Blade on drums, and when I went back the next year he wasn't there and my friend and I were seriously bummed, but by intermission we were both babbling about his replacement, so maybe it WILL be OK.

But then that replacement was Eric Harland.

Sigh.

Love to you, Lance. So sorry.

She was the drummer for Esperanza Spalding when ES opened for WS in Utah, She killed it!

She's played with Herbie for years, everything is gonna b ok!

Damn, Lance. Hang in there pal.

(((Lance)))

(((LOVE)))

(((MAY EVERYTHING BE BETTER SOON)))

Fuck, I'm sorry to hear about your mom and b the bearer of bad news, lance.

like I said, this chick has apparently played in the band before and is a Grammy winner, toured with Hancock, etc.

i watched one vid of her and it was pretty straightforward stuff so it'll b interesting to see how she does with the out there improv.

so far I'd certainly take Eric Harland over her.

these tix r fucking expensive, I guess I shoulda snuck in again this year, but I suppose this is what I get for breaking the stealing jazz only pact Hoover forced me into a few years ago.

i'm in for the Saturday show so at least I can hang out and see the full performance this time instead of running off through the city streets like a madman, dosed in attempt to make it to my morning jacket on time, lol.

i see where you're coming from with the notion that, in a sense, we're all replaceable but I'm gonna have disagree to an extent.

Sure, there's always someone out there more skilled, smarter, more funny, kinder, more likable, better looking, or more (fill in the blank) but I'm of the opinion that u can't replace a personality.

the particular interpersonal dynamic a person share's with the world is unique, the fingerprint with which they approach life, relate and communicate. it may even b the only truly unique thing about us.

a certain character or color of energy if u will; perhaps that is the soul.

u see it all the time in bands replacing members.

even if the replacement is a better musician, it's just never quite the same.

much love to u and your's, lance.

see u at the show

Damn E, gettin' all heavy and shit.

And I agree with all that, and am glad to see that I'm not the only one who has a penchant for pontification.

I do however doubt that hoover "forced" you into anything. You two seem like natural partners in crime.

And thanks for the good thoughts folks.

As with everything, it's one day at a time around here right now.

For some reason it's really easy to just walk in to jazz shows.

Sorry for the verbose pontification, lance.

i'm getting rather spiritual as i age.

And u r correct, "forced" was a bit of a stretch but he did pressure me into the pact after the habit was becoming a pattern to which I reluctantly agreed.

WSQ was gonna b my one exception and now look what buying an honest ticket has got me!

She's legit.

Sounds like the name of a spokesperson for a FL governor or congressweasel.

Cast your vote for Jazz!

I dig the records I've heard her play on.

Lance's "pessimism" aside, many women are excellent drummers.

I was at the Utah gig that Hoople Head spoke of. I like her. It was the second time I heard her play. The first time was around 1994 or so. I saw her in a bad with Mike Stern, Danilo Perez on keys, and John Patitucci on bass at Reggattabar in Cambridge and whoa, Nelly, that was one muthafucka of an incredible gig! So, I would say that everything is going to be OK.
