Thrash Metal

Forums:

I'd make the argument that Metallica is the greatest thrash metal band of all time.

Anybody want to make a case for Slayer, Anthrax, or Megadeth?

Suicidal Tendencies and Slayer

I can understand your Slayer pick in terms of pure brutality and Satan worshippin', Slacker.

I wouldn't put ST in th same league as the Big Four.

Links or it didn't happen.

Love me some Slayer. I used to have a buddy who said this tune always made him want to break something.

Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down

Pantera is a better band than any of the bands listed here. Not sure if they are "trash metal" though.

Although not the first "thrash metal" band (that would be Venom), Metallica is certainly the most influential, bringing their extreme, uber-agrressive sound and maniacal tempos to a much wider audience.  Slayer added an even deeper layer of overt evil themes and lyrics and never veered to commercial territory like Metallica did, but if the term "greatest" refers to the band with the most widespread impact and influence, the thrash metal crown would go to Metallica.

Metallica doesn't get enough credit for their songwriting, which is miles above any of the other classic thrash bands from the 80's.

Martha Stewart is too hot to be 75.

It's weird to see Suicidal Tendencies in the thrash category because they were punk in the early 80s. Corrosion of Conformity also went from punk to thrash.

Anthrax may be too eclectic to be thrash, but that's just my opinion..

I still have a thing for Body Count.

Jethro Tull, didn't they win a Grammy one year?

I don't think Tull is considered a thrash band, Jaz.

The flute just isn't brutal enough to qualify.

I am sure they are considered that by some, St. Mark.  In the very late 1980s or very early 1990s I recall Tull beating Metallica at the Grammy's in that or a similar category.

i'd only classify metallica as a thrash metal band on their first 2 albums. even puppets get's pretty overproduced and almost pop/metal sounding to me at times. def not thrash from the black album on, imo. was never much of a fan of the post 70's metal scene, but i did like a lot of the metal/punk stuff like early coc and dagnasty back then.

I think that's fair, Woodcutter. Their sound definitely evolved, but they are one of the originals and definitely hugely influential in establishing thrash metal.

I disagree somewhat with your take on MOP though; in my opinion, that album is the high-water mark of the genre.

It's nice to see you posting, btw. Welcome back.

S.O.D. - Speak English or Die

that album is the high-water mark of the genre.

>>>The flute just isn't brutal enough to qualify.

"After all, the flute is a heavy, metal instrument." - Ian Anderson on Jethro Tull winning the very first Grammy for the "Hard Rock/Heavy Metal" category for "Crest of the Knave" (which does have some heavy tracks), much to the chagrin of Metallica and their fans who were routing for "And Justice For All."    After the controversy, they started  issuing separate Grammys for "Hard Rock" and "Heavy Metal"

I love that album, Slacker, but let's be honest; that's 2nd tier thrash that doesn't belong among true masterpieces like MOP, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells..., or Among the Living.

Commercial radio and movie soundtracks don't give an album gravitas.

Please. Every one of those records is an undisputed classic.

Oh yeah, that's what it was. Thanks ,Ken.

See? Lady Gaga knows what's up.

edit, reread thread.

I'm sort of questioning Slacker's classic thrash metal credentials here.

Did you ever own Ride The Lightning or Hell Awaits on cassette tape, Slack? Please be honest.

I didn't buy any Metallica albums. I listened to friends albums.

I bought Reign in Blood and South of Heaven and Suicidal's first four.

Then Speak English or Die. Then Evilive.

Then I bought a few Siouxsie and the Banshees albums.

I liked the goth girls at my junior high.

Ok. Please tell me you at least owned a Metal Up Your Ass t-shirt which you wore under a jean jacket obsessively for the entire first semester of 7th grade.

I wore it until my mom hid it along with some stussy shorts that had a hole in them.

I found both, cut the sleeves off the shirt and wore them to picture day.

My mom hated my junior high friends. We moved two months later.

Cool. I'm now comfortable with your continued involvement in this thread.

Thanks for clearing that up, dude.

I love this genre. I still go see thrash metal bands if that is what they are called these daze. I saw Suicidal the other night, with Mr Dave Lombardo on drums. It sounded like SuiSlayer Tendencies. They added some extra parts to a few songs to showcase Dave on drums. It was awesome. Packed house at the new location for the Masquerade in Atlanta. They should have just changed the name in my opinion, it has no feel of the old location other than the name. The parking is much better though.

Enjoy metal, enjoy today!
