I was at the Woodstock '94 thing with Tony Levin backing Peter Gabriel.
I was backstage after his set and in the dark on a trail to the stage I literally ran head first into him.
Got a chance to say hello and thanks!
His thunder fingers thing was insane.
How can we even discuss great bassists without mentioning BobZilla!
Real tough! Almost impossible. I like many of the names submitted so far, especially Levin. I would agree with them all so far. I think Paul McCartney doesnt get enough credit.
BTW, Phil IS my favorite bass player and has been pretty much since I first saw him.
Especially since the question asks for "favorite" and not best or most talented, I'd probably have to say Mike Gordon is #2 for me, with Chris Squire, John Patitucci, John Doe and Mike Watt pulling up right behind.
Pretty cool, Tom. I just haven't been able to get enough Charlie Haden over the last few weeks. I think that's probably the mule that kicked me back to the Zone, actually, was to mention how great that fucking guy was.
Saw another amazing bass player tonight, one William Parker... pedigree includes playing with Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey & John Zorn... studied under Wilbur Ware (Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane). And a great storyteller. Sixty minutes of pure improv.
I hafta go w/Jobba the Schools - obviously not as "Talented" as many/most of the players listed above, but the fact that he plays in an Improvisational/Jam Band (which most of the above listed players dont) and several side projects, plays with Jimmy Herring, and has given me soooo many "beyond the pale" moments, he gets my vote.
