I got my first car in 1966 when I graduated from high school. I had never driven a stick before, but the day after I got the car I left Laurel Canyon where I grew up and drove to the Bay Area where all my friends lived. I figured if I could make it to the freeway, 101, and drove, I’d have very little reason to shift, only when I needed to get gas. It was a gray 1959 Peugeot 403. If you slid the front seats all the way forward, the seatbacks could be flat back to meet the back seat making a very comfortable bed. It had a sunroof and a very roomy trunk. All of that was good because I spent the summer of 1966 living in the car.
I moved to Berkeley from Los Angeles in Spring of 1968. The car was great and even fixed itself one time when it stopped working. It just wouldn’t go. I parked it for a month or so and, IT WORKED! I loved that car.
I lived near Eureka from 1969 til 1974. The Peugeot began to need work and I couldn’t find anyone to work on it. A friend had a double-cab VW pickup that he wanted to trade for the Peugeot. That worked out very well for me because I opened an “antiques” store in Eureka in ‘71 and needed something to haul furniture and other things around in. The VW pickup was rusted to daylight at the junction of the doors and the floor and I had to drive with a sleeping bag covering my feet and legs when I went to Montana in October.
We also had a ‘67 International Scout, but it wasn’t as easy to load. After we moved to Eugene in 1974 the Scout was adequate, especially because it’s so easy to get around on bikes.
Big excitement in 1976. We bought a NEW CAR and moved into a small but wonderful house. A 1976 Rabbit! When the first Mr. Judit and I split up in 1977, he got the car and I got to stay in the house. I didn’t have a car again until 1982 – it really is a great place for biking. I bought the house in 1979 for $39,000.
In 1982 I finally got a car, a 1962 Mercury Comet Custom Classis wagon, classified as a compact car but it was quite big. Gorgeous black and white interior, dull cream-colored exterior. It was like a tank and I drove it until 1992, when I got a wonderful 1982 Toyota Corolla wagon. Brown. I loved that car. Reliable, fun to drive, excellent.
When I found the Corolla it was at a dealer’s. It was priced at $4800, way too high. So I asked the salesman “What would happen if I offered you $3300? “ We then went back-and-forth, lowering the price. He asks, “How ‘bout $3200?”, me, “$3100?”. and so it went til I offered him $2800 and he accepted. That was a fair price for a great car. The car started leaking into the passenger floor in 2003 and was stolen late that year. I got it back, but it never drove the same and the amount of water sloshing around and mold were gross.
I bought my present car, a 2004 Subaru Legacy wagon BRAND NEW, in 2004. It’s a very good car and I like driving it. Drove to Portland yesterday and it was easy.
That’s my entire automotive history, except the car I learned to drive in was an early ‘60s red Galaxie 500XL convertible. My dad loved convertibles, but he never put the tops up, whether it was raining or not. He drove in rain in a poncho. Sweet and funny guy.

My first car was a 1988 Subaru DL wagon. I bought it with 8k miles and sold it to a friend for $150 with almost 150,000 miles.
If that car could tell stories! To put it in perspective, it was once stolen out of my driveway in Burlington. It ended up being found by the cops in Spanish Harlem. It was already so trashed that it hadn't been stripped for parts. The stereo had been pulled out and then just left on the seat.

Great post Judit. Looking back you seem to have had pretty good luck with unique cars.
My first car was a Dark Blue 1977 Chevy Malibu my uncle gave me. Got drunk that night and totaled it.
Second car was a 1976 Yellow Volvo 244 , and that car died on the only hill on Long Island after tripping at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, NY
My first new car that I bought for myself was a 1986 Black Mazda SE-5 Pickup in '86.

First car that I got in late
First car that I got in late 1989 was a '77 Buick Regal passed to me from my older brother. Since then it's been a long line: '81 Ford T bird, '84 subaru gl wagon, '94 volkswagen jetta, '95 vw golf, '02 jeep cherokee, '04 cadi sl wagon, '06 jeep cherokee, '12 nissan pathfinder, '16 ford explorer .
The '81 T bird had a knack for shitting the bed in the worst situations . I eventually left it on the side of 684 in the middle of the winter. Let's just say that when we left the car, minus the plates, it was several lbs light.
I'll always regret selling the Subaru. I bought it for $1100, drove it for 4 years and sold it for $1200. I bet that beast is still running strong.

I learned to drive in my parents' 59 Rambler American black sw, Then they got a 67 Rambler, which I blew up on the way to the beach. That was replaced with a 69 Ford Fairlane wagon. Got my first car in 71 - a white 64 Ford Galaxy with red interior. I bought it for $50 from a fellow cab driver. I didn't know he got it from some drug dealer until I kept getting pulled over - cop finally told me.
In 72 me and my gal bought a school bus from some friends, mostly as a favor to them. Thing was a pain in the ass - always breaking down, getting parking tickets, or being broken into. Sold it and got a white 67 VW camper w/ pop-up.. Became an involuntary VW mechanic. Although I had to work on it all the time, it was a nice car - went all over New England, Canada, and then cross-country in 76 to OR. It was kinda rusted out by then so sold it and got a 66 VW van. Drove it for a while and at some point it needed major work which we couldn't afford, so we bought a green ex-Forest Service Ford Falcon - a great little car, Drank some oil, but made it all around OR and a couple of CA trips,
In 83 I got a "real" job and bought our first new car - a Plymouth Horizon. Fun little car, but we moved to the country and the road was killing it, so got the first of 7 Subarus. We also had a couple of Toyota pickups a long the way - a used one in 89 and a new 4WD in 90.
Currently have a blue 14 Sub Crosstrek - really just an Impreza with more ground clearance. Excellent car.

I learned to drive in a 1970
I learned to drive in a 1970 Jeep CJ that my Dad had bought to do yardwork, plowing etc around the farm. I burned up a few clutches in that baby, and finally a transmission...sorry Pops. Then I bought a 74 Dodge Colt from the local repo man and ran that one into the ground. The folks bought me a 76 Dodge Colt when I went to University, I had a few motorcycles then too. Sold the Colt when I went to CU and didnt have a car for a few years, still had a motorcycle though. Purchased a 78 Monte Carlo in 1983 and did some touring in that one, coast to coast a few times. traded the Monte in on a new Toyota 4WD Extra Cab in 1987. Kids started to come along so the pick-up became a Mazda 626. Loved that car but it started to rust out. Traded that for a Volvo 240 wagon and it became the wifes car.....she's had a bunch of Volvo's since, and still has a 2005 XC70 (220,000 and counting). I had a Blazer, Jimmy, and Bravada at some point, and swapped them out for my Volvo S80. The youngest wrecked that this past summer so I have a new Ford Escape for now. Dont really care for it so I will probably get something else this summer.

Number 1 was a Dodge Dart with a slant six and three on the column. A beast that served me well despite my crappy maintenance routine.
A series of forgettable hoopties until I got another used gem, Honda station wagon with a manual five speed. I took care of that and put nearly 100K on it before I traded it in.
That was for a new Ford Ranger, flare side my first new vehicle that I got at age 47 after that big teacher money started rolling in.
Traded the Ranger in for my present ride, Ford Explorer Sport Trac, still going strong at 145,000. Got it at Jerry's Ford in northern CA.
Of course I have a Jerry hand sticker above the Jerry's Ford sticker.

My first car in high school
My first car in high school was a Jaguar XJ-6. I was such a terrible driver, my parents didn't want me driving the little MG they got me, so they gave me their sedan.
I then burned through a couple of other cars, including a Fiat Spider and an Triumph TR7. The Spider was a nifty little convertible, but knocked the oil pan into the engine block jumping railroad tracks.
I then had a 84 Jeep Waggoner, which was a first generation, underpowered Cherokee that sucked and was constantly breaking down.
After that, I got a Rover Sedan, which was basically a British cop car. That was cool and only one of 600 imported into the United States. The transmission fell out outside of Casper, Wyoming and replacement parts were much too expensive to keep it.
Then I got a Ford Escort, which was the biggest piece of shit I ever owned. Got pulled over constantly in that thing to boot.
After I got rid of the Escort, I just used a mountain bike for a year or two. Then I got a 81 Subaru GL Wagon. Thing was a beast and you could haul 1000 pounds of gear down rutted logging roads with no problem. However, its exhaust system was non-existent, so after I had my son, I needed a new ride and got my '97 Subaru Outback which I still drive to this day and which now has just under 240,000 miles on it.
I also got a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee back in 2000 as a second car. Had a massive engine and all the bells and whistles, but broke down constantly. Blew its engine towing a travel trailer going to see the "Dead" at the Gorge in 2009.

1990 Dodge Colt / A cheap replacement for the first Colt that I drove for 8 years and around 160,000 miles
1998 Dodge Neon / I bought this one after the first year of teaching as the Colt was starting to require serious attention and had it for 9 years and about 150,000 miles
2007 Suzuki SX-4 / This one was a fun car to drive around but was not as durable as I had hoped. It was becoming a money pit after four years and around 165,000 miles
2011 Mazda 3 / My current car and now at 146,000 miles. It still runs great and I'd like to get another 3 years out of it.
I have always bought new cars despite the instant loss of value as my plan is always to drive the thing well past the pay off date. I also drive way too many miles each year to even consider leasing anything. Next up will be a full size vehicle with towing capacity - I'm done with compact cars after the Mazda!

oh gawd, car stories... this is not the whole list.
my first was a '62 Chev Impala, 2dr. I have a pic of my mom holding me next to the new car, and by '76 it was sitting waiting for me to turn 16. A few months later it was stolen out of the parking lot of my high school while I was in class.
I had a Merc Comet for a while, newer than Judit's. '75 I think, with the "3 on the tree" shifter. When it was dying in '83, anything I did would make it run better for a week then the problem would come back.
when my mom passed I got her Cadillac, which ended up costing me a LOT of money, but I kept paying because it was so damn comfortable. '83 Seville, with what a mechanic told me was "the second-worst engine Cadillac ever made".
got my money's worth from a 96 Chevy Lumina and now driving a '13 Mazda 3, little and practical.

My very first car (my mom would never let me drive hers btw) was a 53 Ford Coupe (in 1974) --- there are photos of them online but I don't see how to post them (I did read the formatting guide, but irl it doesn't seem to do what it claims, for me).
Sadly I ran it out of oil after a year or so, then had some old woody station wagon for a few months but that was really a piece of shit.
Got my first VW in Germany, 76... not sure what year it was but this is a picture of my actual car
http://joes-brooklyn.com/picture.php?/1949/category/95
Hmm
OK then I came back to NY and got a yellow 70-ish Fastback, drove it to California & crashed it in San Rafael a few months later. And then I had a Plymouth Fury that the motor mount was broken and it would vibrate madly at anything like a normal highway speed (John Cippolina rode in that car a couple times, but I will venture to guess that he didn't like it much, probably feared for his life like all my other passengers in that car .... what a scary wreck that thing was).
Coworker sold me a 69 Karmann Ghia convertible in 1980 for $3800 but my ex boyfriend crashed it because he didn't understand about the clutch business and really didn't know how to drive either. Totaled it. That was sad. Dream car. I did get to take it to Long Beach & Vegas summer 1981, got a terrible sunburn driving it thru the desert but worth it.
There was a 70 Chevy Belair from another coworker that got me thru the mid-80s and fell apart just coming back from Spring Tour 85 (I think) then my mom handed down 210 Datsun Lane (which I lived in briefly, as well as using it for transportation thus the nickname)
Brought my first li'l premie home from the hospital in that car... by the time of 2nd baby I was driving a few different minivans - kept that up for a few years, more than a few really except for the Saturn that my ex husband crashed head-on into a bigger car, "It wasn't his fault though!". 5-6 years ago I got a late 90s Jetta, then when I couldn't get that to inspect, picked up an old Subaru (it's still here, giving it to my son). And then someone gave me a nice old Honda, not much to look at but it works pretty well.
Probably missed about 3-4 Subarus and whatnot through the years....
I have a big RV also, well not so big by today's standards, but it's 30 feet.... 1993 Southwind.... drove it to AZ & back to NY in 2009, only short trips since then.... and lately nothing, because we kind of use it as more of a guest room now, here on the hill.
I'd like to get a small Class C next.... I've gotten a little better the last few years but still not a big fan of hotels. But I love to travel.

1967 Ford LTD -- a hand-me-down that used to be my mom's car... this was the most bad-ass street car I ever owned, had a 390 under the hood and it just JUMPED... only owned this car from about 1972-1974
1967 Ford Econoline E-100 Supervan -- set up for camping, w/ a mini-fridge... 240 straight six, 3-on-the-tree... this is the rig I drove cross-country when I moved from central NY state to NorCal in the spring of 1977 (right after seeing the GD at Barton Hall, Cornell, 5/8/77)... I kept the van on the road for a LONG time because I was able to fix everything on it myself... finally scrapped it in about 1989
1971 Datsun pickup -- only owned this for a few months in 1989
1957 Chevrolet pickup truck, 3/4-ton, model 3600 -- great classic rig, VERY stiff suspension and uncomfortable to drive any distance... only owned this for about a year
1971 Dodge Power Wagon pickup, W200 (3/4-ton, 4-wheel drive), with a 318 V-8 -- this was a serious 4x4 rig that could go ANYWHERE and got horrible fuel economy... I did all my own mechanic work, and replaced or rebuilt just about everything except the engine... this was my daily driver and my "work truck" from about 1990-2003
1987 Toyota Tercel SR5 wagon (4WD, 6-speed manual) -- GREAT little wagon that will go anywhere as long as I have 7 inches of ground clearance ;-) ... this vehicle ignited my love affair with these Tercel 4WD wagons (which were only built from 1983 through 1988), as you'll see from the vehicles remaining on my "life list"... unfortunately, this car was stolen in December 2009 whjile visiting a friend in Oakland (it was recovered 6 weeks later, but had been stripped of all usable parts... RIP)
1985 Toyota Tercel SR5 wagon (4WD, 6-speed manual) -- purchased this off Craigslist a couple weeks after my '87 came up stolen... I still drive it around when I need to work on my "other" Tercel wagon
1987 Toyota Tercel DLX wagon (4WD, 6-speed manual) -- acquired this in about 2013 but it sat around for a couple years before I was able to get it running... it was my daily driver until a few months ago, but now it needs a new clutch so it's parked until I can get that work done
