Juicing

Forums:

About 6 months ago I sacked up and bought myself a Champion juicer.  Below is a link to the model I picked up:

http://championjuicer.com/index.php/product/champion-juicer-2000-commerc...

It's been a lot of fun using this thing to make all sorts of concoctions.  I typically make enough juice to last for a couple days so I don't actually have to go through the juicing process on an every day basis.  From what I gather, storing the juice in air-tight mason jars is your best bet for preserving nutrients and ensuring the juice stays fresh.  Typically, I keep "like-colored" fruits/vegetables together, for example:

Green Juice: Cucumbers, Pear, Granny Smith Apples, Kale, Ginger Root

Orange Juice: Carrots, Apples, Turmeric

Red Juice: Beets!

There's something incredibly gratifying when ingesting the juice you've created- feeling the micro nutrients absorb into every cell in your body.  Cool Stuff.

My daughter's mother is on a health kick and has been going above and beyond to take care of herself seeing as she's Kaelyn's source of food.  It's really inspiring.  This year for Mother's Day, I just ordered her her own masticating juicer called the Omega 8006, linked below:

http://www.harvestessentials.com/ommo80sigeju1.html?utm_source=google&ut...

I also got her a nice book which provides her with important How-To information in regards to efficiently shopping for and storing produce.

Really excited to give this to her.  Anyone else juicing?

Love to all the Mama's.  They are amazing.

Interesting thread, I just shelled out $3.99 for some fancy juice drink at Whole Foods that said every bottle contained the juice of 4.5 pounds of Organic Cold Pressed Fruit & Vegetables.

My question is after 6 months of juicing have you noticed any change in your health, energy level??

Personally I'm against steroids

I never got juicing. I need to eat whole veggies/fruits to get 30+g/fiber day.

>>My question is after 6 months of juicing have you noticed any change in your health, energy level??

I do.  If you recall, I had an episode where my health was compromised from mold exposure.  Believe it or not I'm still regaining my health and rebuilding my immune system to where it was before that shit went down.  I truly believe the juice has helped me though.  I went a month without it when I was on a crazy travel bender and I could definitely feel it.

>>I never got juicing.

Hi Ender.  Hope you are feeling nice and strong.

Yea.  It's not for everyone.  For my situation, I've really been making an effort to clean up my gut (stomach, colon, intestines).  The key to me fully bouncing back my immune system will be through my gut's health.  For me, making this juice is good because it eliminates the insoluble fiber and allows for the nutrients to be absorbed while giving my digestive system a complete break.  The soluble fiber remains.  Juicing has been an integral part of my detox process for me.

I would never give up eating things I like, I'm more interested in the nutritional value and potential energy bump etc.

I know fruit juices are high in sugar, but added to vegetables they help make it go down.

IE. Where's my $3.99 Woodie ??

Hey E! hows it shaking buddy, long time, hope to see you soon.

Thanks for the feedback and links Soibud

Hey davey!

I'm doing good, How u holdin up man?

i just switched to a mostly vegan diet during the majority of the week, so y'all got me a little envious with all yo fancy juicing talk up in here.

Six months is some dedication, Jay. Good to read it's working for you.

Just for some historical perspective, juicing started back in '76 with the Bass-O-Matic in NYC and the juicing craze has spread in a westerly direction ever since...

We received a vitamix blender a few years ago, love it. Spinach, pineapple, strawberries, beets, greek yogurt and adwalla. Add whey powder, hemp powder. Then i started using ginger powder a few months ago, love the ginger WOW. I prefer a blender over a juicer so there is no pulp waste. The ginger is an absolute treat.

>>>i just switched to a mostly vegan diet during the majority of the week, so y'all got me a little envious with all yo fancy juicing talk up in here.<<<

Wow E the better part of a week, you are dedicated wink I'm doing good, taking some time to help fluff VLZ to its full potential. Vegan is rough... no meat, real cheese or eggs would be hard, ... a deal breaker for me. I sometimes say its a good day when you have pork twice in one day, but I know its not healthy dammit.maxresdefault.jpg

We have a juicer. When the garden is in full production it's great. When I have to buy the veggies, and especially if I want organic, it comes out to $12 for a glass of juice.

On the upside, you can put the solids in soups or stir fry, so at least you don't throw all the fiber in the compost.

>>>you are dedicated

ha ha, I'm trying to ease my way into the life style and keep it realistic.

I typically only drink on the weekends these days or if I'm at a show and for the time being I like animal protein to b an option during those occasions.

i ain't no anti-meat nazi, yet.

just trying to cut back for health, political and spiritual reasons.

I believe the cringe worthy buzz word for my current eating habits is "flexitarian".

I was selling a little practice amp once because I needed the cash. Guy came to try it and wanted to buy it but then he offered to trade for a Champion juicer. I was like aww maaaan.

Then he used all my carrots to demo it. Then he wanted me to give him the amp plus $100. I told him to fuck off. He took the amp and left the juicer. That thing was awesome.

What types of liguid do you use when juicing? I tried for a while using mostly almond milk, but I stopped. I have been thinking about starting up again. Also have been reading up on beets and their benifits for blood flow and lowering blood pressure. Mentally i always thought they would be disgusting, but Im ready to give them a try ad was thinking juicin would be the best route. Any other recipees for beets?

Beet juice alone is pretty nasty, I cook a bunch up and freeze them and add them to my smoothie. With my mix i feel using spinach and beets daily i get the benefit and you can easily mask the taste with other ingredients. I listed my recipe above. When mixed together you can't really taste the spinach or beets. Almond milk apparently is not the best choice. Maybe coconut water.

Slimjim is right, juicing started in the sixties. I remember going to visit friends with my family, these people had a son that never came out of his room and apparently drank only carrot juice, possibly hari chrishna or the like. Sometime around 1969ish.

i started juicing in '97 when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  i have had only one ms exacerbation since then.  i bought a champion juicer & drank so much carrot juice that i turned orange.

currently i drink a juice i make with a cucumber base then i add the vibrant color veggies and greens like parsley or collard. i juice only organic.  i avoid fruit juice b/c of the sugar, altho when i crave sweet it is great to have an apple/carrot.

juicing has served me well.  altho it is increasing expensive to buy the organics so now it is a limited experience.

now i am into seaweed.  ha.

>>Six months is some dedication, Jay. Good to read it's working for you.

I have at least a pint of fresh juice every day but should clarify that I'm NOT on 100% juice or anything close to that.  I'm 5' 9" 170 lbs and physically cannot do anything like that without becoming way, way too thin.  I legitimately have to eat carbs to not lose weight and feel unhealthily skinny.  I also travel a lot and find my diet fluctuates quite a bit on the road.

>>> if I want organic, it comes out to $12 for a glass of juice.

That seems like a bit much for me, at least for where I'm located.  I find if I shop all organic and make juice it comes out to about half of that, which I think is STILL a lot to me.  I soak all the produce in essential oils/water to help clean them.

>>What types of liguid do you use when juicing?

There's no added liquid.  It sounds like maybe you're making some sort of shake via a blender.  In that case, I like to use almond milk as well for my protein shakes.

Does anyone but me just use plain water as added liquid, especially in smoothies? It's really cheap, readily available, and works as well as anything else.

^ I have.  I don't do it often, though.  The only time I really do make smoothies is post-workout and I think the protein powder tastes like garbage with water.  Aside from protein shakes, my smoothie experience is lacking.  YMMV and shit, though!

If I may give my opinion on protein powder: The best thing out their is bone broth protein. I use the Ancient Nutrition brand. 20g protein and 95 calories. The plain is totally flavorless. I go between the vanilla, which is pretty good, and the Super Greens, which tastes like the lawn. Whatever brand you use, bine broth protein is truly the way to go.

BK, i'll look into that bone broth also i prefer flavorless.

I don't use water because it ends up too frothy using the Vitamix.

We use a 30 ounce Yeti tumbler type container and drink on it up to lunch, stays frozen most of the day.

I'll tell you, my gut health has improved 1000% since starting bone broth. It's also the only one that doesn't make me feel nasty. I can't do dairy, I won't do soy, and pea protein bloats the shit out of me.

I generally just mix the powder with water. It's fine. I'll sometimes make a smoothie, but not often.

A few weeks ago I had one of those "buzzed buys." I was surfing and stopped on QVC, where the Ninja was the TSV. My old one was on the way out and I jumped on it.

My new thing is to drink 64 oz of water before I leave the house: 16 oz before my coffee, 32 oz with vitamins, 16 oz with the protein powder. That glass before the coffee is always amazing, like I can feel it getting absorbed.

Our Vitamix was a christmas present, no way would i have shelled out 500 on a blender.

Honestly i was getting ready to re supply on hemp powder, think i'll try your suggestion.

It took me a year of the protein smoothies to get my high energy flow going, my Achilles is fully healed which really helps. Retiring from softball was the best thing for me.

Thanks for the tip, BK.

The health benefits for bone broth are pretty astounding in regards to healing/sealing your gut..  I'll check out that link.

I made my own bone broth, every week for about 4 months: a couple of lbs of beef bones in the crock-pot for 48 hours. It was great, but a pain in the ass and EVERYTHING in the house stunk like beef bones.

The powder is much easier.

Oh, and it beats the hell out of hemp, too!

Me too man LOL.  For a few months, I would buy two rotisserie chickens and boil the bones and dark meat into a broth.  Tasted good... a lot of effort.

Been grabbing this:

http://www.target.com/p/pacific-174-organic-bone-broth-chicken-32-oz/-/A...

Seal That Gut!

That Pacifica stuff is good, but pricey!

At least chicken takes only 24 hours. The 48 hours of beef was brutal. I stopped putting onion and carrot in it, just bones, salt, peeppercorns and onion powder. The powder is way easier.

>>but pricey!

Company expense report ;)

Random Thought:

My gas bill is pretty OUTRAGEOUS to heat my apartment.  Would you think the amount of gas used to let broth simmer for 24 hours would be significant?

Definitely ordering that bone broth protein; will let you know my thoughts.

Nice article you link from Dr. Axe.  Check out this article by Dr. Mercola:

Happy Healing~

I bet you're using at least $5-10 worth of gas. If you left a gas BBQ on extra low for 14 hours, even with only one burner on, you'd probably go through at least half a tank of gas.

I love the process of making bone broth and do it about twice a month.  Makes the house smell great too.

Beef or chicken, Guy?
