Yet again, we see an "opportunity cost" inflicted on the scene ... hi-jacking a bit from a multi-level marketing approach might not be the biggest deal in the world, but it could've easily have been framed in a more cooperative spirit. EVEN the ski area in Telluride took the latter approach for a couple years in offering a discounted "4-pack" if four people got together and purchased a season pass as part of a group.
Instead, Shappy appeal's to our more basal instincts to look out for numero uno first and foremost ... at least it's consistent with his approach to VIP and "comfort" ... but it's not too difficult to imagine a different model that promotes helping one another.
Again, maybe not biggest deal in the world, but it's hard not to see how it's yet another mini slip-n-slide setup ... pointed in the same direction.
Perhaps Pete Townsend was correct in asking "What ever happened to all that lovely hippie shit?!?"
Yet, Shappy's PR machine will keep releasing more crap about his "roots" in the scene ...
I'll go out on a limb here and contemplate whether there's some sort of greater life issue re: needing "approval" (from parents or the like) while doing "one's own thing"? I sense an attempt to resolve an internal lifelong conflict. Along these lines, it's interesting to consider whether there's more to the resurrection of various elements, icons, values, and general approach of a bygone era than meets the eye.
Seems like the 6 folks who want a break on ticket costs could do this and split the freebee, money-wise.<<<
That's just it. Wouldn't it have been in a more "cooperative spirit" to simply offer a 16.7% discount per ticket if 6 people opt to throw in together as a group?
Let's stop rewriting history that everything was always unicorns and pixie dust until the The Shapster came along.<<<
Who said it was?
Nonetheless, from a "lunar" perspective ... looking back throughout course of human history, would it not be fair to say there was another "Enlightenment" (at least in terms of western culture) sometime in the mid to late 60's?
19.5...weren't you preaching the other day about the Elders of the scene teaching the younger generation?
Adapt or be miserable.<<<
True, there's nothing stopping us from simply living by example and contending with stuff we encounter on an individual basis, but Shappy's got his fingers on buttons that can transform sociological paradigms on more of a "wholesale basis".
Why not offer a group discount vs. making it into an "amway" sort of thing?
I think it has a lot to do with knowing your market. I'm sure I would have a much easier time herding cast on meth than organizing 6 jam band scenesters into a group to buy tickets at the same time. Out of those 6 I'm sure there would be ones that:
Are trying to score tickets at half or less of face value. Music should be free man.
Would not get their share together in time, if ever.
Would get into some sort of altercation with another member of the group and announce, "either they don't go or I don't!"
Commit to buying one of the ticket and then promptly fall off the side of the earth, not to be seen again for 6 or more months.
Have serious reservations about the "group" leader handling the money because everyone knows more than their share of shady tour people.
The list can go on and on. Better results having someone with a computer code sell individual tickets and when that person sells 6, they get a freebie.
p.s. Peter Shapiro can not and will never be able to transform sociological paradigms ever. You give the dude way too much credit. He's a concert promoter whose job is to make money for him and his investors. Nothing more.

Perhaps you are correct to some extent, but I could care less about the easiest way for Shappy to pull in revenue. If you really care that much, be sure to practice having your money ready before you get in line :-)
The point still remains: he could've framed it in a cooperative light, but he didn't. He could've even kept the essential discount model, but simply changed the wording ... possibly even just adding a phrase "or disperse the discount amongst your group" vs. planting the seed within a person's head as to how only he or she might benefit.
While he's not the first in the industry, nor will it turn it upside down, it's nonetheless a nudge "backwards" (from the perspective of the "scene") IMO ... and in combination with other general strategies and tactics there's a cumulative effect on the collective psyche re: "how the industry works". I'm sure there wasn't one dude in a flatbrim loaded with pins wearing a dab cloak that suddenly created a whole new "image" ... it kinda needs to percolate & permeate over time until it's accepted as the status quo.

And, well stated, Jonas.
Shap didn't start this, he simply applied it to the Golden Goose known as the Deadhead scene. 10 custys for every true head (read: broke hippie)
