Me and my wife went to the show last night. I used to see Buffett at Blossom Music Center back around 77-80 before the parrot head thing took off. It was always a lot of fun, long shows with him doing mostly his own songs.
Last nights show was good fun but not as long as he used to play. The show was maybe 2 hours long. 8 -10:30 with a delayed start, two song encore with the band, and finished with him doing a solo acoustic tune for a fan at his 100th show. Could not believe the amount of covers that he did, no dead though. He did do, take it easy, southern cross, brown eyed girl, a crowded house tune, chesney' home town tune, along with 5:00 somewhere. Cheezy, yes but his band is good at what they do and that is deliver a party atmosphere for the beach ball thowing throngs of parrott heads.
I was watching the live stream Saturday, Jimmy's getting old, and I don't care for his new look. It makes him look even older. His vocals were also struggling. Still by the end of the show, it seemed to get going pretty well. It looks like they will be streaming lots of shows this year. If you sign up, they will send you an email the day of the live streams.
Saw Jimmy a couple of years ago just for shits and giggles and was impressed by his showmanship and top notch band. Although I wouldn't consider myself a Parrothead. I certainly gained a new appreciation for him and his music. His LPs (A1A, Changes in Latitudes, Son of Sailor, etc.) are now in regular rotation on my turntable.
I am just finishing up his book (Pirate Looks at 50) and while much of it is a blow by blow description of his 50th B-Day family outing to the banana republics, about a third of it is flashbacks telling a PG-13 version story of his life and the world according to Jimmy Buffett. The guy has wit and a sense of humor and it would be cool if he issued a more uncensored book of his various adventures from his wilder days when he moonlighted as a dope runner, partied with the Eagles, and traveled with Hunter S Thompson.
