Our generations defined

Forums:

There's a whole lot of chatter about "generations" and which generations suck and which ones are good and who belongs to which generation. Now. I don't claim to be a scholar here but I thought it would be good for me to define the generations so we all know who we are bagging on.

Millennials - born between 1990 and now. Self, centered, annoying. They are to blame for many bad things that are happening.

Generation X - born between 1965 and 1989. Good people, very chill, will help others. These people are keepers.

Baby Boomers - born between 1945 and 1964 - see "Millennials"

Generation Old - born before 1945 - Good in combat situations but now expect everything to be handed to them. Also see "Generation  X"

Its funny but seeing it written down like this I sense a pattern. Soon some cool people will be born.

It's funnier seeing someone write it down

Gen X rules, and have mostly kept silent so far, but I believe as the last of the baby boomers die off, gen X will really come into their own as the leaders of the country and the world.

god help us when the millennials take over.

hopefully I'm dead by then.

>>Generation X - born between 1965 and 1989. Whiners. Complain about all other generations. Over-simplistic in their thoughts and ideas. These people should all be killed NOW.

There. Fixed that for you.

Whoops! I forgot a couple of traits for the Baby Boomers: 1) overly-sensitive and 2) prone to lash-out violently.

Is this what it has come to?

Sorry Bucky, but that's so off the mark it would be unfair to even call it wrong.

They, us, them, The Other.

Unenlightened, erroneous.

This stuff is not linear, More like overlapping circles.

The human arc in all of history in tiny, much less a paltry twenty years.

The worst are the Boomers who try and create a separate generation for themselves.  Some Zoner was going on about something like that for a while trying to distance themselves from the Boomers.

Just terrible.

Fuckin' ageists.

I have friends who are baby boomers

Excellent example of whining and complaining. Thank you, Timmy.

Yah you know, those black people are just a buncha negative trait, negative trait negative trait

But forget about them Jews! (insert whatever negative stereotypes)

And women!! (now say something bad about half the planet)

Etc.

I'm not going to think of any more groups to make assumptions about - those are the main groups that were open(ish)ly being disparaged-at, when I was growing up. (Boomer, btw! And fyvm.)

Not much difference between characterizing folks by ethnicity & gender, vs. by their year of birth.

IMO.

Yah  I probably just don't get it (there's got to be something humorous happening here, this page is not exactly a beehive of intellectual activity churning out unique ideas so - what else is there besides attempts at funny-ness, right? or stabs at such) but whatever.

Well, of course there's always the chance that it's just plain old trolling.

Excellent triple post, Six.

Well done.

That sucks I got a PM that there were a bunch of new posts here and then this.

A lot of Boomers find technology confusing.

Why does Sixer want to kill my Mom?

It took a real left turn there

Nothing personal, atiex, but that entire generation needs to be wiped from the face of this nation.

Look, that Gen X group includes my own little brother.

Sacrifices must be made.

Are you posting from your Blackberry right now, Six?

I belong to a Blank Generation

Always the same rehashed jokes and burns. I was trying to go somewhere new - but you guys just want to hold hands and play ring around the rosie again and again. Very sad.

Wait, before I get exterminated I really need to get my life insurance in order.

Should I get an insurance agent that's Gen X or Millenial?

>>>>>>I was trying to go somewhere new

Where were you doing that?

Just changed the paper towel roll. Thought of Vivala.  Lo and behold, ssdd.

>>Where were you doing that?

>>These people should all be killed NOW.

I'm pretty sure I have never espoused mass killing of an entire generation before. If I did - I am sure you have copied the post and waited for this very minute.

>>>Lo and behold, ssdd.

Does Viva make toilet paper?

Aw, don't lie Gravy. You've been thinking of VLZ for the past thirty days, I'd wager.

Hey, attix, John Popper would like to personally thank your mom. Saw it on a shirt, so it must be true.

Lol, Fog.

I hope you don't regret having made that comment, Gravy. Especially since you don't have that "other" Phil site to run your garbage on.

Settle down, lil buddy. We can see you're excited.

I was citing an iconic pre-HORDE Blues Traveller tshirt. The other side said "corporate rock still sucks"--thought you'd get it. Forgot about your experience deficit, but a great example of generational difference. Maybe your mom remembers.

I think you might be gearing up for a rough week ahead, Gravy.

Doubt it very much. But your position has been noted. You can (try to) refrain from addressing me now and I'll do the same. If you will...

For better or worse, I've always considered myself to be a part of The Sesame Street Generation

I think my generation is trying to quit bread.

Oprah eats bread everyday.

I went to a naturopath and she told me to cut out wheat, dairy and eggs.

What the fuck kind of life is that to live?

I don't do much dairy anyway, except some half and half in my coffee and cheese, so I left that in. There's no way in fuck I'm giving up mayo and anything else with eggs, so I left that in. I've cut back on wheat by about 95%.

Maybe I feel better. I don't get headaches every day anymore, but damned if I know. I cut out wheat the same day I got prescription glasses.

I cut out wheat/other grains, sugar, and dairy about a year ago. amazing what that still leaves you with. Basically I make everything from singular base ingredients myself now. I feel amazing, better then I have since I was a child

But, But... No Haz Pizzas?

Can't we all just get along?

I have your back graivy.

Stay. Strong.

>>>>Well, of course there's always the chance that it's just plain old trolling.<<<<

Obviously I haven't been here much lately, since that didn't even enter my mind. But duh. And thanks for the helpful light bulb.

I like how it turned into a healthy foods discussion, or whatever all that food talk is a euphemism for.

Unless it's something disgusting (don't tell me).

What's the good in trying to separate us from one another? We are all here on earth, what can bring us together?

Judit makes another fantastic point to those who continually seek to divide us - like the OP tried to accomplish in this thread right from the start..

we like to compartmentalize. you know, put baby in a corner and all

>>Generation X - born between 1965 and 1989. Whiners. Complain about all other generations. Over-simplistic in their thoughts and ideas. These people should all be killed NOW.

There. Fixed that for you.<

Homeowners vs non-homeowners. Go

Turtle? Have you ever fought fire not with fire but with satire?

Or do you just throw coins as your standard response?

MAYBE instead of inciting people and getting the pitchforks together for OP, that those who are angry about this concept take it up with one Sir Tom Brokaw, who, I will now tell you, is the writer of a book called "The Greatest Generation", available now at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Generation-Tom-Brokaw/dp/0812975294

satire...lol.

>>satire...lol.

Oh, you did not think it was satire? You think I REALLY WAS espousing the killing of an entire generation?

Seriously?

Lubricants and condoms for 6'r.

 >>MAYBE instead of inciting people and getting the pitchforks together for OP, that those who are angry about this concept take it up with one Sir Tom Brokaw

This was part of Brokaw's book or were your words, Badger dude?

>>which generations suck and which ones are good<<

If those are Brokaw's words, then I apologize for my incitement. Please put away those torches and pitchforks people.

Baby Boomers gave you the interwebs.  Keeping future generations posting together dbmb's

I am not going to be cajoled by your rabble rousing.

Baby Boomers gave us the Grateful Dead too, but, you know...

Badger, I like you more and more every day.

I have no torches, do have a pitchfork.

Tom Brokaw didn't start the thread after seeing previous Viva threads where people blame various generations for the downfall of what we knew. If Mr. Brokaw posted, or someone who didn't know that this has been a divisive topic here, I wouldn't have had the same thoughts that I do about it.

>>>>Baby Boomers gave us the Grateful Dead too, but, you know...

Lies.

Jerry was born in 1942.  Phil in 1940.

You guys get Bobby and you deserve him.

>>MAYBE instead of inciting people and getting the pitchforks together for OP, that those who are angry about this concept take it up with one Sir Tom Brokaw, who, I will now tell you, is the writer of a book called "The Greatest Generation", available now at Amazon

lol

I've seen this book countless times in the free bin back in FL.  True story.

Clearly Badgers intention was to troll up a stink fest here, no reason to be ashamed Bucky.

>>>What's the good in trying to separate us from one another? We are all here on earth, what can bring us together?

How about letting all the banned people back in so everyone can gang up on them with pitchforks and torches. Just as good or better than singing around the campfire.

Really good point Judit, not only are we all here on earth, we are all here on this wacky blog thing.

i'm not here to read between your lines 6er....

Which generation created expensive sandwiches and why?

pretty sure its you assholes slacker...the ones that created horizontal fences and shit...

>>You guys get Bobby and you deserve him.

We also get Pigpen and Billy, Brent, Donna and Keith as well.

We don't get Mickey either - he's too old. Thankfully.

So 3 of the original 5 were Baby Boomers - so I stand by this: >>Baby Boomers gave us the Grateful Dead

Also - YOU get John Mayer - and you deserve him even more.

Whatever generation gave the world Autotune should be Drawn & Quartered like Braveheart.

>>>>>>> The worst are the Boomers who try and create a separate generation for themselves.

That was probably me, but my point was, the generational "span" of ALL these "categories" is way too broad.  As a late Boomer I didn't have any of the classic "Boomer" experiences (Vietnam, Woodstock, Quaaludes, etc).  But whatever . . .

>>>>>So 3 of the original 5 were Baby Boomers - so I stand by this: >>Baby Boomers gave us the Grateful Dead

Nope.  Ratdog and Rhythm Devils. No Phil, No Jerry, no GD

The Grateful Dead is timeless.  We both know this.  Bring it in 6.

*hug*

You really discount Pigpen that much? I can't do that.

I'll hug ya' anyway ya' big dummy.

I have a group of 30 somethings working for me who refer to themselves as millenials. Who defines the age bracketing  for these groups?

>>Who defines the age bracketing  for these groups?

Apparently it is a combination of Tom Brokaw and Bucky the Honey Badger.

No quaaludes, Bob? Dang.

A few times in early College.  Then they were gone, replaced with Tuanol's & Plastadil's for a few years.  Then came Darvocet . . .

baby boomers -  the ones at the bottom of the baggie you look at and think, damn, those are tiny...

and they're the ones that end up warping your space nicelyyes

i have friends  from 18-70+

there's good ones in every group. just like gd eras...

I just read the Wiki entry on "Generation x."

Damn, we're fucking awesome.

Gen X brought the Dead world the phenomena of Touch-heads and rampant nitrous use. Suck on that balloon, you millennial and boomer bitches!

>>i'm not here to read between your lines 6er....

Thanks, Turtle, but honestly - my posts are not that complex. I try and keep it simple here. As a matter of fact, some say simple is pretty much all I have to offer.

>> How about letting all the banned people back in so everyone can gang up on them with pitchforks and torches

What?

It's going to be awesome when Gen X leads the colonization of Mars; which will essentially eliminate the possibility of our species ever going extinct, and will therefore immediately become the greatest achievement in human history.

It's cool though, Baby Boomers. Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire at Monterey. You'll always have that.

Born in 1942, Jimi Hendrix was not a Baby Boomer.

Good to see you're still not as on top of things as you think you are.

Jimi Hendrix wasn't a baby boomer, but Bill Gates is.

ateix, i realize you're missing Gravy, just a simple request here, go troll someone else please or beg Gravy to stop ignoring you. Chin up bro.

Fog, do you carry a hacksaw in your trunk?  I'm still curious how you planned to remove the bears paw from its body.

This meta-zoning is as boring as ever.

Timmy, really glad you are taking an interest. Considering we have a few squeamish folks here i don't feel comfortable going into detail here, feel free to email me anytime and we can chat it up on the subject.

I'd suggest seeking out some Native Americans in your area and ask them about the Bear Spirit, you probably have some Bear Clan folks out that way. Good luck man.

>>>>i don't feel comfortable going into detail here

No need to get to descriptive.  Just wondered what tool you were going to use to remove it.  I've got an axe in the trunk of my car.  Wondered what you're packing in yours.

>>>>>>I'd suggest seeking out some Native Americans in your area and ask them about the Bear Spirit, you probably have some Bear Clan folks out that way. Good luck man.

Were you into Native American spirituality pre-sobriety?

>>>Born in 1942, Jimi Hendrix was not a Baby Boomer.

Guess we'll scratch that off the list then, too.

It's actually kind of amazing how little the Boomers have to show for anything, isn't it?

>> ateix, i realize you're missing Gravy, just a simple request here, go troll someone else please or beg Gravy to stop ignoring you. Chin up bro.

No idea what you're talking about. I was asking what you meant by ranting about pitchforks, then you reply with an accusation of trolling. Perhaps you could elaborate with a little bit more coherence?

Depending on what job i'm doing in my yard the contents of my truck bed changes week to week. At this time i have two tarps, hoe, pick axe, ladder and round point shovel.

Have you considered my suggestion on the full size truck extended cab?

Maybe Spirit of Bear could jump in here and provide us with some insight?

I'd like to give you more comprehension credit than that, sorry if i was wrong.

In the old days we would have trolls of various sort come to PZ and harass everyone, most of the time it would end up solidifying the group to concentrate on one common enemy. Same concept with the banned people, instead of picking at each other about baby boomers and gen xers we would all be distracted and stop the repetitious inner bickering, in theory that is.

I don't think the issue is with my comprehension, Fog. Let's put it that way.

Name names.

These are great little tools.

folding saw.jpg

The blade folds into the handle.

> i have two tarps, hoe, pick axe, ladder and round point shovel.<

so you carry around a murder kit?

No turtle, its called yard work.

Name what names?

>>>No turtle, its called yard work.

Why would you need that stuff in your truck if you're working on your own yard? Shouldn't it be in your garage?

duct tape, gloves...

>>Why would you need that stuff in your truck if you're working on your own yard? Shouldn't it be in your garage?

I own two homes. Would you like to see some of my spring landscaping pics?

turtle, your road rage issues are more of a threat to society than my hand tools are. Have you stopped violently throwing coins at cars yet?

Are any of your spring landscaping pics covered in carnage, Fog?

owners v. renters

Every year I buy shitty clippers. Half way through the season I kick myself for not splurging on Felcos. I've been in this pattern for 20 years.

You can cut off multiple fingers with Felcos.

Cowboys vs Indians

yes, i stopped.

Hahaha, well the cat nabbed a chipmunk and brought it in the house then my blue heeler finished it off. No pics of that. I tried to throw the towel over it before she got it, very sad..

>>It's actually kind of amazing how little the blah blah de fucking blah...blah blah...blah

Let's stay focused on the thread topic, Six.

What are your thoughts on Gen X accomplishing literally the greatest feat in human history when we set foot on Mars in 2033? How does that make you feel?

Why do you care?

The youngest Gen Xers will be 44 in 2033.. It will be Millennials on Mars.

I care because it's important, Six.

We are pushing the boundaries of the human experience so far beyond the Baby Boomer's muddy little fields of failure that future historians are going to look back and wonder how a group of people so utterly devoid of talent and ability could have birthed something a great as Generation X.

It's a mystery; even to us.

Blah blah blah

Yeah. Advancing the human race and ensuring the long term survival of humanity blah blah blah.

It's cool, Judit. You guys did invent tie dye (I think). So, there's that.

Tie dye is an ancient art.

Bummer.

You can't say I'm not trying to help.

Why the hell do we want to set foot on Mars? A better legacy of Gen X would be universal health care, or some shit like that.

Space travel is a waste of time and money and it's bad for the environment.

Obviously not everybody is on board with Elon Musk & myself on this Mars thing.

Fog, who are the banned people you're referring to?   Tulsa Chris said himself that his 30 day timeout was up but he's to proud to come back here.  Are you talking about Kirley?

I think there are some smart and interesting Baby Boomers; but this thread was an extremely poor showing for them overall. It really is a shame.

Let's keep threads on topic, and not resort to low level trolling and threats of genocide, ok?

I think there are some Gen Xers here who just post blah blah blah over and over. That's is the true disappointment of this thread.

It's good to see a wise person like Judit also sees through this.

I see mainly the MP3 generation posting in here.

Silly people parroting back what the TV told them to think.

Realist Huperson generations are in 40 - 50 year cycles.

That's about the time People start to figure out that they are supporting children, are working, and will soon drop Dead.

Let's say you were born in 1750.  Poor plumbing, lack of electricity, but excellent Organic Fruit, Grains, Meat.

Four 50-year cycles later, it is 1950... Doo-Wop tunes on the radio,  Humongous automobiles,  everyone has electricity and plumbing.

>Space travel is a waste of time and money and it's bad for the environment

Water purification

NASA engineers are collaborating with qualified companies to develop systems intended to sustain the astronauts living on the International Space Station and future Moon and space missions. This system turns wastewater from respiration, sweat, and urine into drinkable water. Commercially, this system is benefiting people all over the world who need affordable, clean water, especially in remote locations. By combining the benefits of chemical adsorption, ion exchange, and ultra-filtration processes, this technology can yield safe, drinkable water from the most challenging sources, such as in underdeveloped regions where well water may be heavily contaminated.[15][34]

Solar Cells

Single-crystal silicon solar cells are now widely available at low cost. The technology behind these solar devices—which provide up to 50% more power than conventional solar cells—originated with the efforts of a NASA-sponsored 28-member coalition forming the Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology (ERAST) Alliance. ERAST’s goal was to develop remotely piloted aircraft, intended to fly unmanned at high altitudes for days at a time and requiring advanced solar power sources that did not add weight. As a result, SunPower Corporation created advanced silicon-based cells for terrestrial or airborne applications.[16]:66–67

Pollution remediation

NASA’s microencapsulating technology enabled the creation of a "Petroleum Remediation Product," which safely cleans petroleum-based pollutants from water. The PRP uses thousands of microcapsules—tiny balls of beeswax with hollow centers. Water cannot penetrate the microcapsule’s cell, but oil is absorbed into the beeswax spheres as they float on the water’s surface. Contaminating chemical compounds that originally come from crude oil (such as fuels, motor oils, or petroleum hydrocarbons) are caught before they settle, limiting damage to ocean beds.[21][31]

Correcting for GPS signal errors

In the 1990s, NASA scientists at JPL developed software capable of correcting for GPS signal errors, enabling accuracy within inches. The software is called Real-Time GIPSY (RTG). John Deere licensed the software and used it to develop self-driving farm equipment. As of 2016, as nearly 70% of North American farmland is cultivated by self-driving tractors, which rely on RTG originally developed at NASA.[35]

Water location

Dr. Alain Gachet founded Radar Technologies International (RTI) in 1999 to use satellite generated data to identify probable locations of precious metals and during its use found it could also detect water. The system developed with this data, WATEX, uses about 80 percent of its data inputs from publically available NASA information. This free information allowed RTI to develop the WATEX system to successfully locate water sources, such as in 2004 at refugee camps during the War in Darfur.[36]b

btw - Mark - what I was referring to when I asked "Why do you care?" was in response to your question "How does that make you feel?"

So, tell me - why do you care what I feel?

I could spend all day shitting on Baby Boomers but will start with Billy Joel, Tommy Bahama clothing and balding men with pony tails.

>>>>why do you care what I feel?

Gen X doesn't lack empathy like the Boomers.

Well played

Judit and Surf with quality contributing in this one, very refreshing.

There's nothing worse than a Boomer-adoring Gen Xer.

People give the Millenials shit, but Gen Xers who listen exclusively to classic rock and idealize the lost Woodstockian utopia have no true identity. Millenials are firmly rooted in their own time; Boomer-adoring Gen Xers are adrift in a fog of cultural irrelevance. They failed to seize their own place & time in history, and they have no real voice of their own.

Mark, buddy - you need to lighten up on this a little.

lol

The destruction the Baby Boomers have wrought on our society and the world is no laughing matter, Six.

Yes, of course.
