Dead & Co Taking it Further

Forums:

Am seeing many Dead Heads loving Dead Co.  I am in that club. JM has really developed and takes the band so much Furthur than any previous incarnation if you get my drift. But to each his own. Am grooving on this right now.

Perhaps you guys can turn me on to some of your favorite  Dead & Co Videos?

Thanx and Enjoy!

That $200,000 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillion Skeleton Dial Watch Mayer is showing off just kind of ruins it for me.  To each his own.

Phil lives in Richmond and takes the bus to TXR.

Zoner please...

China>rider, should we be concerned that you know that much about Mayer's fashion accessories? That's quite a detailed description.

Nah, no need for concern, just pointing out the obvious.  I wear a much more reasonable Seiko Kinetic.

Anything is more reasonable than a $200,000 watch.

Oteil is on acid

This was a sick show I ended up on John's side

Oteil is gonna sing!!!

Bassist Oteil Burbridge has shared an update from his rehearsals with Dead & Company, revealing that he “might” be taking lead vocals on some tunes during the band’s tour this summer.
In an Instagram post, Burbridge shared a picture of him singing during rehearsals and captioned the photo “Scenes from Dead & Co rehearsal. Somebody might be getting to sing lead this summer….”
There has previously been a “Let Oteil Sing” movement among Dead & Company fans, leading to a custom shirt being made and eventually sold for charity. Burbridge has sung lead on Grateful Dead songs in the past, including on “Franklin’s Tower” with the Allman Brothers Band and on songs like “Dark Star” and “Turn On Your Lovelight” during his recent stint with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead.

"Anything is more reasonable than a $200,000 watch."

Dead & Co tickets are way overpriced in my opinion.

Here's one for only $179,319.90

http://www.jomashop.com/audemars-piguet-watch-26580io-oo-d010ca-01.html

Pairs beautifully with the John Mayer Collection $150 hippie beads.

Furthur...

For me its always been about the music and what moves me. Not that hard to figure what one likes. The same for most.  Phinacy  Phickle Phil Phans Phocusing on watching watches tell us more about them then it does about the music.

$20 tickets advanced

Less than $20 day of show

Free 10 minutes after Jack Straw opener

Overpriced?

Jeez

What up KK

As far as Dead & Co I like to listen to my favorite is Irvine last year . Good stuff.Fun was had . Can't say I noticed what type of watch Mayer was wearing though .

I am considering the Camden show on the 25th, but I just don't see myself driving 90 minutes to see this band.

I'd be all over it if it was only 90 minutes away. For me, though, it's at least 3 hours, a day off work, and a hotel room.

^that's crazy. I'd only go to such lengths for Tom Waits.

It is crazy, and that's why I'm not doing it! DeadCo is fun and all, but not fun enough to justify all that time and money.

I'd be inclined to head to the Camden DeadCo event if

A) Cheap tickets happened
B) I could take the River - Line light rail train down from Bordentown

That train is liek, ridiculously inexpensive, about 3 bucks round trip. However, the Sunday schedule shows the last train out of Camden at 9 PM.  Saturday seems to have them running North until Midnight.

I watched the first vid...decent enough but nothing to go out of your way.

Unfortunately Mayer's dancing may be more entertaining than the music.

I went to SPAC for my first show & thought it was ok, some nice moments in the 1st set..not completely convinced, then went to Fenway & was blown away, listened to most of the tour after that & started really enjoying what they were doing, there can be a lot of seemingly drowsy moments, but when they get going they're excellent. Love what Oteil is bringing.. drums were usually always a take a leak/grab a beverage time for me, but the 'drums' have been great..yet, I think the band might be better without Mallet Head Mickey surprise,  6/25 is a great one, can't find a whole video. Fenway night 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiBn7hzOTvI

Why no PNW shows?

The Gorge last summer was one of their best shows.  The crowd was decent size, and the on-site camping, vibrant Shakedown scene with lots of vending and a live band, access to the Columbia River for swimming, and spectacular scenery were a winning combination.

Thought we might see a two night run this year, but we got bupkis.  Surprised they are snubbing Washington and Oregon.

Mayer plays the Gorge on July 21st, lol.  My summer concert dollars are going to Elvis Costello at Chateau St. Michelle, Ziggy Marley at Woodland Park Zoo, and Ween and Willie Nelson shows at Marymoor Park.

I wouldn't hate on a nice timepiece. Brent wore that gaudy Rolex for a while. I like watches

>>> wouldn't hate on a nice timepiece.

Right.  It's on his right arm, too, which is behind the fretboard of his guitar most of the time.

>>>>>Right.  It's on his right arm, too, which is behind the fretboard of his guitar most of the time.

I didn't know Mayer was a lefty.

The more they change the more they stay the same...... as it ever was.  Good nights, better night, average nights.  In many cases catch an average night and your Ok with the scene. Catch a good night and your happy  and you want to tune in for the next night.

Catch a good night and walk away unhappy?  To each his own.

I wouldnt go to great lengths to see them but when they come close, I will go. Cheapo tix to be had.

I like watches. If I were a multi millionaire i think I'd buy a nice fancy one. I'd still give most of my money away though. At a certain point, how much does one need? Gotta spend it somehow. Some buy cars, i'd buy me some little tiny watches.  Go to a show!

Never dissed DSO.  And why would I?  Too bad you need to compare as if that was even a qualifier giving validity to your comments. The band ripps it up. JM turns it upside down and inside out.  No copy cat. no clone.   All fun and games and good times.

That was an excellent show! The jamming was grate the songs were all Good Ole Grateful Dead songs all played really well. Atix you r so off base as far as I am concerned and I am as far as you are concerned I guess. All I can say is if one likes Grateful Dead music then this band is worth seeing.

Nice tribute to Greg Allman during the encore. I love how they closed the loop on Playing In The Band

Im looking forward to tomorrow!

>>>>>You really have not listened to them have you?

Ive listened to a few shows, and think they're pretty cringe-worthy.  For those that enjoy it, enjoy.

Did anybody get a Dead and Co Nagalene water bottle at Target yet?  On clearance for $3.99

KK really seems to be pushing this band.

>>> "Really eye opening stuff for the ill informed or lazy."

so, if you don't enjoy this band you are either ill informed or lazy?

are you part of the D&C street team?

As I said above if you like Grateful Dead music then this band is absolutely worth seeing and IMO is far from cringe worthy . To each his or her own as they say . I find them quite enjoyable.

The sales pitch is strong with this one.

"That $200,000 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillion Skeleton Dial Watch Mayer is showing off just kind of ruins it for me."

At least he wasn't playing Wolf...yet.

Nagalene, why can't you be true?

Oh,  Nagalene!

Why can't you be true?

You keep leaching out the BPAs like you used to do.

smiley

Still can't get through one song with these guys.

It just isn't what I like about this music.

i turned both of the shows off after a song or 2...

I never listen to Furthur or Deadco but I've had good times at the shows. It's a good time if you can square the $circle.

As I said above if you like Grateful Dead music then this band is absolutely worth seeing and IMO is far from cringe worthy.<<

So . . . Bobby is no longer singing Candyman?

Some opinions are really changed by the overly opinionated expressing their thoughts here. I mean really, when some speak others stop and suddenly agree. Holy Fuck the power...

No room for squares.

i agree with myself mostly....

So over it.

I agree with turtle.

Phil singing Terrapin Alligator or Birdsong is as cringe worthy as any Jerry song Bob sings. Who the fuck cares they're still playing Grateful Dead music and it's 2017.

That Phil line up at The Cap does nada for me.perfect example of why he needs to announce his Phriends before ticket sales  Looks like folks r enjoying it . My dad at 74 G_d bless him didn't like the first night. Said the horns don't belong . That's his take.

Peace !

Who said that this weekend's PLF lineup was any better? Doesn't change the fact that Dead & Co. is a shitty band.

Just checked out the awesome quality NNjimmy video of last nights Phil show.  Music was ok. Just not a huge fan of horns and lead flute over that of a wailing guitar.   I really preferred Dead co. by a country mile and a factor of 10

I tried again because I love this music, but i just cant make it through one whole song with these guys.

Painful.

Its actually amazing that Phil is turning out a better product using the TXR busboys.

Dead slow by a country mile......high-larious....

Practice u all talking bout practice.....all Phil needs is da bus-boys....

Dead slow by a country mile......high-larious....>>>>>

and a factor of 10

>>>and a factor of 10

Do you get paid by the post?

If not, why not focus on quality rather than quantity?

Miles in the country go by pretty quickly, actually.

Its those city miles that really draw out.

To each his own...If people are digging it that's all that matters...It's not for me at all...I find absolutely nothing psychedelic in Mayer's playing...but I saw an awful lot of Grateful Dead shows...

I've seen setlists for two shows on the recent tour, and I would have been pissed seeing the Dead play those shows on a good night, I can't fucking imagine how painful it would be to see Bobby up there doing it. Recreating mediocre 80's Dead shows just doesn't do it for me. Mayer and Oteil seem pretty cool, but I just can't handle the old guys. Glad people are having fun though!

Is a hipster the opposite of a square?

Title: Daily Camera on panel talk benefit

Boulder Daily Camera: Grateful Dead members to join Boulder panel discussion before show
Ticket to event, which includes concert admission, costs $420
By Christy Fantz, Staff Writer |  05/24/2017 08:06:09 PM MDT

Former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann will take part in a Boulder panel discussion in the South Stadium Club at the University of Colorado's Folsom Field next month.

The event, planned for 4-6 p.m. Saturday, June 10, is part of a Colorado Music Hall of Fame VIP reception. Deadheads and members of the public may attend for a ticket price of $420, which includes a ticket to a Dead & Company show that evening. A portion of the proceeds directly benefit the Hall of Fame, according to organization spokesman Phil Lobel.

"Colorado Getaway: The History of the Grateful Dead in the High Country" will feature the musicians discussing the Dead's history in Boulder and Colorado — including a Human Be-In at Denver's City Park in 1967, a rumored Reed Ranch barn gig near Colorado Springs, storied shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a famous 1987 Telluride show and the band's appearances in Boulder, which has traditionally held a hotbed of Deadhead activity, according to a press release.

The musicians will be in Boulder to perform with offshoot band Dead & Company Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10. The pair of shows on Fourth of July weekend last year in Boulder marked the return of live music to Folsom Field for the first time since 2001.

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame's "Colorado Getaway" will feature a musical performance and commentary by David Gans (of SiriusXM's The Grateful Dead Hour) and interviews with Colorado promoter Don Strasburg, archivist Paul Epstein (of Twist and Shout) and David Glasser, who is re-mastering the Dead's entire catalog, according to the release.

There will be a silent auction with historic artifacts and photographs, along with items like "The Guys," a limited-edition etching of the Grateful Dead by Jerry Garcia.

The Hall of Fame will also unveil a timeline exhibit that will be housed at Red Rocks' Trading Post, the Colorado Music Hall of Fame's home. Boulder's Pasta Jay's will create a custom "Dead-inspired" menu, according to the release.

Besides the former Grateful Dead members, Dead & Company features John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti. Phil Lesh, the Dead's fourth surviving member, has his own offshoot band, Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band, which will be playing three sold-out Fox Theatre shows later in June.

Exactly, Poz. Word for word....except it only gets worse upon listening.

I say replace the Bore3 with Eaton and Molo and you might have a pretty decent Dead cover band.

Hey Poz, Barry Bailey here! Great review on seeing two setlists....not! Really that's how you judge a show by the songs? Please, thought you knew more than that. This band came out of the gate on FIRE!!! They were throwing down some grooves that kept this old man going hard all fucking night! Bobby is playing stronger than I have seen him forever. Chimenti and Mayer are definitely pushing the music but Weir's vocals are bringing it all together! Oteil just puts out a great vibe the whole night! I will say I left the first Dead and co show I saw in Bgcc in 2015 but I gave it another shot last summer and now I'm on board for 6 shows this summer!!!

>> grooves that kept this old man going hard all fucking night

Anybody else getting really warm in here? All this talk about pushing... grooving... vibes... ohhh

Dude if you feel the need to jerkoff to my post... Go for it!

Not so much the post, as the thought of John Mayer's grooving, undulating rhythms and... euoohhhhhh

Also, the "horns don't belong" people sound sillier than ever.

The TN Jed from 5/26 alone puts that nonsense to rest.

Phil run was nice. Like a pastrami sandwich with Mayo. Not something I will ever want to do again.

>>> Really that's how you judge a show by the songs?>>>

Well the songs played certainly have an impact. As I said, the setlists were so bad that I can't picture being happy seeing Jerry play those shows, even on a good night. Playing mediocre at best songs really well doesn't often get me that fired up. But I'm glad you're into it and having a great time! I admit, I definitely would go see them if they played at my house.

If they played at my house I'd move.

>> Well the songs played certainly have an impact. <<

Poz, you dislike Dark Star, and love I Will Take You Home, right?

Re-creating mediocre 80's setlists????  Ok tell me how many times you saw Casey Jones, or Loose Lucy, or  Dear Prudence played in the 80's? I saw Casey Jones once in 84 that's all I got! They never played Loose Lucy in the 80's and the Dead only ever played Dear Prudence once I think! So how is Phoenix  a typ 80's setlist?

My mediocre shadow of the Grateful Dead is better than your mediocre shadow of the Grateful Dead.

This is just plain silly.

Chimenti > Vince

when did the grateful dead play dear prudence? i would like to check that out. saw garcia play it many times but don't recall the gd playing it.

Say, my dog has no nose.

>> So how is Phoenix  a typ 80's setlist? <<

I'd guess he's referring to the 6-7 song 1st set, followed by 4-5 songs > Drums/Space > rocker>ballad>rocker 2nd set format.

No, they didn't play Dear Prudence, but Jerry Garcia was playing (as were Phil and Brent, for that matter).

Zevon said enjoy every sandwich, but I think he probably ate good sandwiches.

They didn't ever play it! There was a dear prudence Jam in 82.

What's your point, Barry?

Since the GD didn't play Dear Prudence (even though JGB did), this is somehow groundbreaking stuff?

Zevon also said "I guess not going to the Doctor all those years didn't payoff after all" and then he died!

Finally got my Core3 Loose Lucy!

---said one person, ever.

Wait, when did this become about "groundbreaking?"

I mean, when was the last time any of this stuff was charting new waters?

'71

Dead & Covfefe

>>when was the last time any of this stuff was charting new waters

Q 2001-2003

I might have somewhat agreed with you had you said, "Q 1999-2001."

Somewhat...

I dont think there were any '99 Q shows.

It's all really PL&F, isn't it?

Yes, but only a subset was the Q.

Don't think they played until 2000.

Well then, I fully disagree with Six. The Q, 2002-3 was aimless and boring. Shitty, long jams that went nowhere and had no cohesion, and material off TABA, that was generally crap.

Fuck it though, you were right. The last groundbreaking shit was back in 1971. It's not like anything the Q did pushed boundaries so far that it could be considered new and different.

Not quite sure this band is taking it "further" but should be a fun night out.

Haven't been to a deadco show.  My wife and I are going to the Wrigley shows. We'll see.

And what constitutes further? Never liked that expression or searching for the sound. Lol.

The last rototilling was in 1974. Just been adding bullshit since then.

Can't wait to hear the recordings from this tour while strolling around our hillside trails.

Not quite sure this band is taking it "further" but should be a fun night out.>>>>>>

I hope you guys are well rewarded.  Looking forward to a review.

I'll go check out the Camden show if I can get a free ticket.

That city is a nasty Crack-town, but the nitrous mob is always out in full force at the venue.

Adds that urban edge to the 'Scene'.

I could huff a colorful balloon during the chorus of 'El Paso' ??

>>> Re-creating mediocre 80's setlists????  >>>

Yes, look at this dreck:

Set 1:
Music Never Stopped
Dire Wolf
Jack Straw
Loser
Friend of the Devil
Brown Eyed Women
Bird Song

Sure, if Jerry were there it would have been cool because there was lots of Jerry, but after a hot start, that's still a pretty lame finish, even back in the day. Factor in that Bobby Shatner is singing half the Jerry stuff, and that's just painful to my eyes and ears.

Set 2:
Playin’ in the Band >

China Cat Sunflower >
I Know You Rider >
Drums/Space >
The Other One >
Black Peter
One More Saturday Night
-encore-
Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door >
Playin’ in the Band (reprise)

Other One, Peter, Sat. Night fourth quarter? I absolutely would have been ripshit if the boys did that in the 80's, unless they were on absolute fucking fire, but I don't think they could have had enough fire to make that enjoyable.

Just not my cup of tea on paper, that's all. I can't see how this band could play it well enough for me to enjoy. DSO, maybe. Our local Dead band that kicks ass - possibly. But not the core three, they just bring nothing to it for me.

I know, Poz, right? I was always ripsht pissed when they played songs that I didn't like, or in an order I didn't like. I mean, what the fuck, I paid $15 a night, and saw runs of 8-12 shows in a row. For that kind of money and time they should have played what I wanted when I wanted.

>>>>>I absolutely would have been ripshit if the boys did that in the 80's

They often did, except replace FOTD and Birdsong with first set Bobby tunes,

POz was pissed a lot back then, but he kept going.

I'm sensing a lot of pent-up anger coming out of Candyland.  Is there a crack in the Gingerbread Palace?

"I swear, if I hear another TOO>Wharf Rat>T-Stones<NFA, I'm going motherfucking postal!"

Probably not a good time for Bobby to dust off "Bombs Away".

>>>>>Really that's how you judge a show by the songs?

Partially.  Don't you?  I don't really care to see shitty or subpar songs played well or at all.

Though I do remember one really great version of Baba Jingo, but that was thanks to Jimmy Herring.  I don't particularly care for the Dead Co lineup except for Otiel, and Chimente.  So I really don't want to see them playing crappy songs.  They're boring enough playing Dark Star.

I used to be super obsessed with what the Dead played for like my first 25 shows then Brent died and I started mostly dancing in the hallway etc and tried to just enjoy the moment and the energy, and any bust outs or rare songs was just icing. I was also only 19 years old when Brent died. I remember coming out of 3rd night Landover 90 and I had had the best time dancing in the hallway for the first time and a buddy was all pissed because they didn't do any thing special (they had just busted out Loose Lucy and Black Throated Wind the nights before) and then I realized....

How do people get caught up in what they (Phil, Bob, whoever) play now? They're all a bunch of fucking geriatrics for chrissakes.

>>> "I swear, if I hear another TOO>Wharf Rat>T-Stones<NFA, I'm going motherfucking postal!" >>>

OMFG how true! Cap that off with a Black Muddy Turd and it was almost too much to take.

I'll still never forget my first DSO show, I figured out about 5 tunes in that I had been at the original show, and it was a great show. Then later remembered that it was the dreaded fourth quarter you mention above, so we left after drums and saved ourselves the pain!

D'oh

I think it's the 3rd period, not the 4th quarter.

We always called it 4th quarter to nyuah.

Poz, you didn't do enough acid.

And it was still too much!

Was the encore Overtime, or Sudden Death?

Mercy Rule is my guess.

dso

smh

Until 1986 I used to get pissed about set lists and songs being played to often and then the diabetic coma happened and that went away for me as I was just happy to see Jerry playing again .

As far as DeadCo set lists the songs I want to see r Bob singing Bob songs the most.  Some may have not been happy about Lost Sailor-St.of Circumstance in Arizona . That actually made the show for me personally and the funny thing is from 80-85 I would cringe when they played it to much.

I can't really explain it but if you don't like em don't listen and don't go. Which seems to be the case for most. To each his or her own but I see no need for all the negativity

Peace

>>>  I see no need for all the negativity  >>>

Bitching about the bad shows was always a fun and important part of the experience for me and my crew. To this day I think we tend to remember and talk about the really awful shows more than the great ones, probably because they were rare. It's not a negativity thing, because it's enjoyable to talk about the badness.

But more enjoyable to groove on the goodness.

I hope.

Shoreline Bump

Poz, all you've ever done about DeadCo is bitch. That's all you've done since you signed up here. You're never going to have anything positive to say about anything they do. You're whining about a band that you don't like.
