>>>>Announcing Phil Lesh & Friends ft. Bob Weir, along with Ross James, Holly Bowling & Alex Koford at this year's Sound Summit! Tickets go on sale Wednesday, June 21 at 10:00 AM PT at www.soundsummit.net<<<
so are actual phil lesh and friends lineups outside of the cap just never going to happen again? what could he possibly see in koford and james that makes him want to choose them over folks like molo and sless, who are probably available and would probably want to play the gig? i was really exited when i first saw the announcement, but ill probably end up skipping this...
how have his shows at the cap with the more big league PLF lineups been going? is phil not able to play at the complex level he was playing at just 4 or 5 years ago?
when txr opened, phil and live dead music was probably my favorite thing in the world, i was not at all ready to give it up, and in just a few short years ive gone from being totally infatuated with the whole thing to seeing 1-2 shows a year. but when JRAD comes to town and things get dark and the improv gets heavy, the magic, for me, is just as strong as ever. but phil, deadco, etc have been a serious bummer the past few years. early years of TXR were ok, but its gotten worse rather than better, at least for people who only attend these shows for musical improvisation and to use psychedelics.
this isnt coming from some far away "hater", most zoners who frequent TXR have seen me there time and time again for all kinds of lineups, from the family band to the Q. i really tried to have a good time with the family band players...just once before all is said and done id like to see phil in a real venue with real friends and not have to fly to nyc...such a bummer that phil is investing his time into "vibes" and community rather than music and improvisation.
This sounds like fun, except for the logistics, cost and hot direct sun. The music and the company will probably be great! I love what the PHJB add to the mix.
Hi Folks! Thanks to Judit's help, I can log on again.
I'm hiking up and down the mountain with my friend John. We did it from Fairfax a few years ago, when it was the Mt. Tam Jam. That time we left early to get almost out of the woods before end of twilight. It took longer than expected, and we walked in darkness for a few miles.
This time, we'll be more prepared with head lamps and good flashlights, and plan to stay until the end. We're going to park in Ross near Phoenix Lake, a slightly shorter, and more direct route, accessible by wide fire roads for the night hike home, with options for wooded, shady narrow hiking trails for the way up. North side of the mountain. Lagunitas Rock Spring fire road intersects Ridgecrest Blvd. near Quarry parking lot just above the Mountain Theater, approx. 2000 feet elevation and 500 feet lower than the 3 peaks.
There are also great hiking routes from Mill Valley, Stinson Beach, and other trail heads, but I live on the north side, and the bigger crowds will come from Mill Valley where parking/traffic may be challenging.
I'm psyched to see Phil and Bob play together in such a beautiful setting close to my home, and it's a benefit to raise money to help maintain public park and open space areas. Otherwise, I wouldn't be inclined to spend $121 to hear Phil play with slow tempo Bob and his pedestrian Family Band. I'm looking forward to a fun and enjoyable adventure, and a cool GD infused party with kindred spirits, on and for my beloved Mount Tamalpais! I anticipate a day full of Good Shit!
If anybody wants to hike with us, I'm potentially open to that, as long as you are fit, healthy, experienced at hiking long distances with steep elevation changes, prepared with your own equipment, food and water, and most importantly that you are Not A Whiner. Because I don't care if your feet hurt and you are tired, hungry and want a cold beer, when we are still 5 miles from the car. On the generous side, I'll bring enough weed for everybody to stay high, and promise you won't get lost, because I have been hiking this mountain for 26 years and know these trails very well.
We're coming from the North too. How long is your route?
We were thinking of arriving super early and attepmt to park at the Pantoll or Bootjack campground lots for a shorter hike distance. Know anything about those lots?
It's an easy hike from Pantoll or Bootjack but those lots are often full early on weekends even if there isn't an event at Mt Theater. I don't know how the lots will be used or regulated on the day of the show.
Parking at Phoenix lake is problematic because lot fills early, and a gate closes access at sundown. We have to park a mile down the road and walk up the road. The route from downtown Ross is about 7 - 8 miles on fire roads. It can be shortened to 5-6 miles on the way up by taking fun cut off trails and paths. Allow 2.5 - 3 hours + each way, in my opinion.
Yes, take the Lagunitas Rock Spring route past the Lake Lagunitas dam between Lagunitas and Bon Tempe lakes. I may have overestimated mileage slightly.
I dislike driving or being a passenger on winding Panoramic Highway from Mill Valley, which will be cluttered with slow moving traffic and clueless tourists. I don't mind walking 15 miles round trip to avoid that, and to experience the mountain in all it's grandeur and beauty without the use of machinery.
Also found these 2 parking areas, only 45 minutes walk to the NW. The first parking area is mapped, the 2nd one seems to be at Ballou Pt. Trailhead. Read the first review, by Mr. Joseph, it's interesting!
Altho it is nice to see Bob & Phil playing together, seems only Billy & Mickey still have a (drum)stick up their ass about Phil's reluctance to tour . . .
From those parking areas you can walk along Ridgecrest Blvd (not recommended), hike on the wooded, shady Cataract trail (my choice, plus take a side trip to the waterfalls), or on Bolinas Ridge/ Matt Davis trails plus unmarked paths (fun, sunny open hillside with some ocean views). To get to the parking area, you are driving most of the way up, either via Panoramic/Pantoll/Ridgecrest with everyone else, or via extremely steep, windy Bolinas Fairfax road, which was closed for months due to slides and other winter storm damage. Not sure if it is reopened through to Ridgecrest. The other access from Hwy 1 on the coast is open but that's a long haul too. I'd rather hike from the Ross, Fairfax or Mill Valley.
Thanks Tofu, for that last advice for approach from the west.... we'll be driving down from Occidental, via the coast highway... that's our plan today, anyways!

It's a great venue but it gets hot as hell up there; there is very little shade.
It will take the bus 20 mins to a half hour to get up there, and the roads are very windy.
I think it says the cheapest parking up there is $35, very limited. ( but then you avoid the
bus and can get out pretty quick).
This venue is about 5 miles from my house; I may go this year.
