Wow - yesterday I had an irresistible urge to hear Ricky Don't Lose That Number, so I played it. RIP Walter. Only a year older than me, and shared a birthday with my wife.
“Walter Becker was my friend, my writing partner and my bandmate since we met as students at Bard College in 1967. We started writing nutty little tunes on an upright piano in a small sitting room in the lobby of Ward Manor, a mouldering old mansion on the Hudson River that the college used as a dorm.
“We liked a lot of the same things: jazz (from the twenties through the mid-sixties), W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, science fiction, Nabokov, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Berger, and Robert Altman films come to mind. Also soul music and Chicago blues.
“Walter had a very rough childhood — I’ll spare you the details. Luckily, he was smart as a whip, an excellent guitarist and a great songwriter. He was cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny. Like a lot of kids from fractured families, he had the knack of creative mimicry, reading people’s hidden psychology and transforming what he saw into bubbly, incisive art. He used to write letters (never meant to be sent) in my wife Libby’s singular voice that made the three of us collapse with laughter.
“His habits got the best of him by the end of the seventies, and we lost touch for a while. In the eighties, when I was putting together the NY Rock and Soul Review with Libby Titus, we hooked up again, revived the Steely Dan concept and developed another terrific band.
“I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.”
Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more
He don't travel on down to the neighborhood
Liquor store
Lucy still loves her coke and rum
But she sits alone
Cause her daddy can't come
Daddy don't drive in that Eldorado
No more
Driving like a fool out to Hackensack
Drinking his dinner from a paper sack
He says I gotta see a joker
And I'll be right back
Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more
He can't get tight every night
Pass out on the barroom floor
Daddy can't get no fine cigar
But we know you're smoking
Wherever you are
Daddy don't live in that New York City
No more
Aw. maaaan. I dig his guitar work. Steely Dan is a big part of my musical mind. you always know a Dan tune.Caught them last year and it was great. RIP Mr. Becker.
this is the first time a musician who is really special to me died.
my dad was playing steely dan for me since before i was old enough to go to school. i "rediscovered" the dan several times over the course of my teenage years, and was obsessed with them, brian wilson, and the dead in my early 20's.
i am officially bummed out this morning. really happy to got to see them live, at least.
Sounds like Fagan will continue on with Steely Dan as a band.
Super bummed to start my morning with this news. Only got to see them one time. Thank you, Poz!
Donald Fagan is playing at the Masonic in SF next Saturday. It was on my calendar but I wasn't really planning on going, but now for obvious reasons I'm in a bit of a Steely Dan mode.
I just might find myself on the top of Nob Hill on the 16th.
