Blue Öyster Cult

Forums:

The "Yet another Mexico Festival" thread reminded me that last Friday that I saw  Blue Öyster Cult at Tanner Park here on Long Island and they were on fire.

I had not seen Blue Öyster Cult in forty years since 1977 whe RUSH opened for them at Nassau during a January ice storm.

BOC was at the peek of their in powers in 1977 touring the world in support of their album Agents of Fortune. Great night.

First I was saddened to hear BOC founder & guitar player Allan Linear (Patti Smith's old lover) passed away two years ago.

It was windy down by the water, and I couldn't get a good photograph.

The sound was fantastic & the lighting sucked for a BOC concert.

This Eric Bloom & Buck Dharma's band now that Joe & Albert Bouchard are doing their thing together now.

Buck Dhama is an amazingly skilled electric guitarist. Sounds like he is down picking with a switch blade.

Always dig the Last Days of May/Joan Crawford & Cities on Flame.

I wish they would bring back ETI and Dr Music

They still do Buck's Boogie...a smoker.

Hope to see them again soon out here.

I think trade off is ETI for Cities of Flame of Rock & Roll now(which they really nail down, literally perfect).

I missed ETI too though.

I am going to Joe & Albert Bouchard in September.

I had to re-familiarize myself with Blue Öyster Cult's legend and repertoire. It's been a while.

From, what I believe was from Al's last tour. Nice lead by him in this video.

Sounds like you had fun.   Too bad the core band can't stay together.  Sounds familiar.  Eric Bloom and Buck were always the front of that band anyway.

FYI, the correct spelling is Allan Lanier, and his primary instrument in BOC was the keyboards, although he did play some rhythm guitar.  He also wasn't a founding member, though he did join soon after they changed their name from Great White Whale and was present for their main years as a band.

It sounded very good. Very large. You would have liked the show, Dave.

I turned my back to leave and they launched Cities on Flame and it just sounded so fantastic, I had to stay.

You're right, I think I would have dug it.  I've had a soft spot for BOC since I was in Junior High School.  Respect to them for keeping it going.  It must be a little bizarre to go from being in a band that played to packed arenas and stadiums to playing free shows in the park and the casino circuit.

Crowd was official BOC fans from as far as Florida.

Funny, the Good Rats opened (the living members only) unbeknownst to me. I didn't know & missed that set.

"the living members only"   Glad you clarified that.

What is the Good Rats without Peppi?

“Got any Blue Oyster Cult?”

“No. I don't have any Blue Oyster Cult.”

Buck's Boogies

(oops, wrong thread)

Buck Dharma was hugely influenced by Garcia as a guitarist, and he has said so many times.

I only saw them once must been around 79. My first show at the old Boston Garden. It was the height of the Disco Sucks movement and I remember there were what seemed like hundreds of Disco Sucks banners hanging from the balcony and lots of Disco Sucks chanting. That is about all I remember about the show.

I saw BOC open for Rush in '84. It was pretty cool, but Rush was definitely the headliner that night.

I got polluted with my son & father tonight while a great local flamenco guitar played for us all night long

I explained how this could very be the best summer of my life. At least for last 27 years, since the birth of my son.

I gave my son three CDs tonight.  "Boston" to remind him to not kill himself over aspirations, "Magpie Salute" to let you know that there is future and to let it unfold as it's written. And BOCs Agents of Fortune. We convened and opened them simultaneity, to let let you know how proud we are to are here to live on Long Island and and there is still hope.

zui- lol

I spent an enchanted evening with Joe & Albert Bouchard - founding members of Blue Oyster Cult (and guitarist/painter Joan Levy Hepburn) at the Boulton Center in Bayshore, NY. last night.

It was an intimate setting with about 65-75 folks in attendance.

The night started out with a question/answer session with Al & Joe moderated by a professor from Stony Brook University; which was the band's launching pad in 1967.

BOC is in the Long Island Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & really should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Joe said from a production stand-point, they were emulating Pink Floyd with no photographs of the band on their first album, to remain mysterious.

The Q&A session was only 15-20 minutes. Then they performed un-plugged, told stories, and rocked it stripped down, big time.

Met Joe & Albert after the show and they are just wonderful guys. Thanks to the Boulton Center for letting these legends shine their wares there.

Joan Levy Hepburn did the Patti Smith vocals parts on Vera of Gemini very well, I must say

The show thoroughly Rocked!

(PS- Acoustic Godzilla brings it!)

Joe was busting Albert's balls for smoking a big fat joint before the show.

God bless these guys.

Just noticed Albert lives by me. Just sent a message of thanks to him for being so groovy.

Joe said he wrote Astronomy while tripping on a nice night in Coves Neck (North Shore) of Long Island.

Albert told a story of how he met his girlfriend, Helen Robbins aka Helen Wheels at a Ravi Shankar show at Stony Brook. Helen Wheels was a singer in her own right, and was very envious of Patti Smith and wrote Sinful Love (on Agents of Fortune) about Patti Smith.  Joe said when they played Sinful Love for Patti all she said was "I like it, it has a good beat."

The Patti Smith Group was born from the success of her work with Al Lanier before she had her own record contract secured.

Here is a nice tribute Lenny Kaye wrote about the late record producer - Sandy Pearlman on Patti Smith's web site -
