If you had to choose between either olives or mushrooms ...

Forums:

... and would not be able to have the other for the rest of your life, which would you pick?

Olives

File under First World Problems.<<<

Actually was thinking of a "deserted island" sort of scenario at first ... where one or the other would be the only food available.  Which would be more sustaining in the long run?  I suspect it'd be olives.

I'll give up Eggplant AND Okra if I can keep *both*  Olives and Mushrooms.

Right now I'm raising some Shiitake 'shrooms and foraging for Oyster mushrooms.

That time of year when I can pick Oysters off fallen Trees,

My son takes mushrooms (but not olives) on his pizza.

My daughter takes olives (not 'shrooms) on her pizza.

Duuuude....

Yes, I will pick pizza. Half olive, half mushroom....and a beer.

i'd be fine if i never saw either again..

Scarlet,

I will trade you all my future Eggplant & Okra for your Olives & Mushrooms.

Now that is a Deal laugh!!!

Mushrooms.....assume it includes truffles.

No brainer.

Love mushrooms ( especially my own stuffed recipe) ...I eat them every way possible,fresh,sauteed,broiled,bbq'd....yummm !

...olives are disgusting to me, had one once when I was a kid....that was enough :(.

Love Olives -- pimento and garlic stuffed (Quality Ones ) -- as well as black on pizza w pepperoni

Olives. Never seen any adult beverage with a mushroom in it.

Lyn,  I'll take your extra Olives smiley

I've never eaten an Olive right off the tree,  just the brined / cured varieties of all colors.

Shrooms,  however;  I've picked buckets & buckets of Wild ones,  which have the greatest flavour compared to supermarket fare.

It's quite fun discovering a rush of "Lobster Mushrooms"  while strolling out in the forest.  That is Hypomyces lactiflorum,  which parasitizes the host mushroom,  typically Russula brevipes.  They look like Lobster and taste Lobster-ish.

The common Autumn Chanterelle can be plucked at garbage-bag quantities,  and are delicious.

Boletes are really, really tasty,  but there are many malicious varieties out there.

Olives for sure.

Jazfish, Pay more attention when adults drink tea...

I'll have the shrooms, please.  Olives can F up a dish like a cigar F's up a room.

You right, Trailhead, I didn't think of the Gort juice.

Olives In A Dish ? NO THANK YOU ! no

I'm sorry, most of two years on the Mediterranean drove my desire for olives.  I hated them as a kid too. I think most kids only get exposed to the shitty olives.  When I was 20 a friend said "you don't like olives"?  My response was they were too salty. So he admitted that he pours out half the brine and adds water.  Spanish green olive reinvented.  Still not my favorite. I love the Turkish ones that are mottled green and purple.

And................where would we be without olive oil!

I love that Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The Italians,  Greeks,  Spaniards and Turks all make nice product.  Some have strict codes as to which pressings can be called "EVOO",  "Pure",  or so forth.

Please don't yell "RACIST" for omitting the California Olive Oil producers.  The little I've tasted was just fine,  but those Meditteranean types have got it down.

hmmmm, I do love Olive oil Stu, never thought about that, and I cook with it all the time ..:)

The extra virgin is a bit strong tho for me ( justifies my dislike for olive taste i guess ). I tend to pick the olives out of my antipasto !

I actually have family in Italy that owns an olive estate and we produce some good olive oil product, one day I want to visit them...

Alestra is my maiden name.

no question mushrooms as I hate olives but like olive oil (and oyl)

mushrooms no contest, they're all good.

not a big fan of black olives, but I will eat them.

prefer green olives on pizza if it has olives.

Olives, final answer!

Im gonna go with olives, stuffed or a variety.  Id hope the island my grow some mushroom of its own.  Maybe more filling too. Mushrooms yuk.

no one on this planet has ever regaled anyone else with stories of how great their concert experience was with 5g of olives...

mushies, of all kinds, always

drizzled with EVOOsmiley

Olives everyday and twice on Subdays

I like EVOO and I like Silly Cybin. Plain olives and most mushrooms, not so much, but those little blue stems...

What was the question?

I love olives. All kinds of olives from all around the olive growing world. I cook with them and eat them as is with or without other foods.

I love mushrooms. All kinds of mushrooms. Greg's liver couldn't process mushrooms (they made him sick) so he didn't eat them. I ate fewer when he was alive but now I eat them anytime I want to.

If I had to choose between them, olives might win, but I wouldn't make myself choose..

Disco Stu's not a olive nationalist bring him up on treason charges.

I choose shrooms. If your gonna lose your mind on island do it right.

Mushrooms on steak with peppercorn sauce, Deep fried mushrooms dipped in fry sauce. Mom and I like pan fried mushrooms by themselves. Hen-of-the-woods mushrooms at Terrapin Crossroads was off the charts good.

My current Extra Virgin Olive Oil is actually from Portugal.  It has cryptic Portuguese words on the label.  While I don't support or not support their current regime,  it is tasty Olive oil.  Maybe they are commies,  or not.

They produce some awesome Sardines as well.  I've tasted some very nice Red Wine from there.

Oak dude,  settle down.  I did not disparage the quite nice selection of NorCal Olive Oil.  Tasty indeed,  but the Euro folks have a long history,  and competitive pricing.

As kids, we'd wear black olives on our fingers regularly

Yum

Alex grows his own mushrooms. He just had a big shiitake harvest, and got some weird feathery kind of one this week that he'd been trying to grow for years now. He's thrilled and I've loved learning how to cook various types in many preparations.

To me, they're texture makes them inedible. Ew

Altho: garlic stuffed kalamata......!!

>> While I don't support or not support their current regime

Funny, because all of the Portugese I met in Portugal love their country and current admin.

Are there psychedelic olives?

yes, they are stuffed with purple pimentos for some reason laugh

McD, I don't know about olives, but a guy I worked with made fermented ganja dill pickles. I never tried them but he claimed they were stony AF. Seems like a waste of good ganj to me, but I guess he had plenty to spare.

I'd give up olives if I had to choose but I really like both olives and mushrooms, tough choice.

I planted a couple of Cornelian Cherry trees (Cornus Mas) last year to give birds yet another reason to come to my yard. I planted a little of Greg's cremains under each tree because the birds remind me of him. They are not like usual cherries, being in the Cornus (Dogwood) family. The cherries are oblong and in the varieties I planted they are very deep red when ripe. One of the things that appealed to me about them when I was researching which trees to plant was that you can brine them, like olives. I hope to try that next near.

I've also tasted some preserves made from them in Albania. They were cooked til severely reduced and tasted reminiscent of a fruit molasses with a very deep flavor. Pretty interesting.
