Zoner Down-RIP Mr. Tofu

It is with broken heart and heavy head that I report, that our own Mr. Tofu, aka Stewart Levy- has left this dimension after a brief illness.

Please send out positive thoughts to the Universe as he travels a different plane.

Stew is survived by his beautiful wife, Anne and his son Ian.

He was a friend of mine. I will miss him greatly, he's been a huge part of my  life for the last ten years or so.

I would like to salute my brotha and friend, he was a source of many a laugh and a generous host as I spent many an afternoon with Stu at Rancho Obi-Wan smoking, playing music and communing with the chickens and cats.

Please let's hug each other in person and in cyberspace to celebrate the life of this incredible soul.

Peace.

So sorry for your loss of a dear friend and Zoner.
May he rest in peace and his memory bless those who love him.

May the four winds blow him safely home. RIP

RIP MR. Tofu.

Bummer, Stew was a great guy. Sad news.

Sad, Richard. He was a good friend to you. Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Tofu Head was a good guy, such an interesting guy, both on and off the black screen.

Sweet, gentle, tough, knew so much about a bunch of things, loved his wife and friends and the great wild.

He'll be missed.

This makes me sad. He was a good man and will be missed by many. Fare the well Stewart

Sad news. My condolences to all friends and family. He's been a fixture here for years and his posts always fun to read. RIP Stu.

Zoner down. Such sad words.

RIP Tofu. Good dude. I remember partying with him in the parking lot at TXR. He informed me that to get a really good sandwich you had to go to New York City. Since then I have been to New York, and he was right.

Sorry to hear the sad news, Dickey.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Rest in Peace, Stewart. Condolences to all that knew and loved the man.

Vibes to you , dickey.

I never got to meet Mr. Tofu, but I enjoyed his work on the black screen, and reading the tributes here reinforces the idea that he was indeed one of the good ones.

RIP Mr. Tofu, and my condolences to all who knew him well.

Sad news indeed.

My condolences to all of Mr. Tofu's family and friends.

Very sad news,  deepest condolences to all.

I always enjoyed his posts and take on things here and on the old zone.

Wouldve been a cool one to meet in real life, condolences to all those that knew him here and had the pleasure of shaking his hand, sharing a hug...laugh , smile ...a lifetime of more  ....or just a quick moment in time

Definitely a good 1 gone

RIP Mr Tofu.

Hugs to all who knew him.

Condolences to all. Such a short time to be. RIP.

Oh no.

Tofu was a GREAT zoner. He had strong opinions on just about everything imaginable, was completely unafraid to share them fully & articulately and was more than willing & able to cross swords with those who disagreed.

I had many excellent back & forths on the black screen with tofu and there were so many examples of him wading in neck deep on a wide variety of subjects, but one in particular that that comes to mind is his epic "discussion" with lites that went on for days about card playing and gambling odds.

It was never easy to stick with northernlites when he dug his heals in, but tofu was an expert poker player and excellent writer and he ultimately got lites to back down. It was zoner hall of fame shit.

But as good a Philzoner as he was, Stu was a better person in 3D. I have at times found it a bit odd when meeting a zoner face to face, always trying to remember if I've ever been snotty or condescending ("Do I sake their hand or get ready to duck?") but from the first time he introduced himself to me Stu always had a big welcoming smile and was easy and fun to hang with.

We had very similar taste in music and I would run into him and his lovely wife at shows often. Before shows and during intermissions we blocked many an isle over the years with long, easy conversations.

This is such sad news. This must be so hard for his wife and son, I'll be thinking of them and everyone lucky enough to have known him.

All things must pass.

On it goes.

Wow. Yeah, Stew was one of the good ones. We enjoyed the same shows many many times and he and Anne were always top notch. Trying to work my feeble mind to remember last show I saw them at. Was only a few months ago. I had no idea he was ailing. Damn, this a tough one.  RIP and fly high Stew.

RIP Tofu, hope your transition was peaceful and without pain. Condolences to all who knew him on/off the screen, sounds like he was even cooler in person.

Stew was the first Zoner that I met in 3D, though I didn't realize it at the time. I was relatively new to DNB and I was on my own at 142 Throckmorton,  standing by myself, waiting for the music to start.  The guy standing next to me offered me his joint and shared information about the band members. It was such a nice, relaxed encounter and I really appreciated him reaching out to me.  Interestingly, during set break, a kind person offered me a pin.  Somehow, during our brief conversation, I mentioned Monkey Tunes and realized that I was talking to Jamjuice and Peak!  My very first verified Zoner encounters.

Years later, I saw Stew in the crowd during David Nelson's 80th birthday celebration and I felt a sudden urge to reach out to him to share that he was my first Zoner friend and that he was so kind when I first met him.  I was so happy to see him and express my gratitude.

RIP Mr Tofu Head. I enjoyed our exchanges over the years on here. Your posts and interactions with me were always articulate and heart felt. I recall going through a very difficult time and sharing my experience on here; Tofu was there to engage and share perspective.

This sucks so hard. Tofuhead was a really good person and fine Zoner and way too young to be referred to in the past tense. My heart breaks for the lovely Anne and all their loved ones. I'm so sorry, Dickyb; I know how close you were. Rest easy, Stew. Peace to you and love to everyone.

So sad to hear this news. Stew was a great guy and kind soul. He'll be missed here and in music community where he/we traveled.

Always Liked Tofu Head  - RIP Tofu....heart

Sad news- saw many a show with him

condolences to his family xxooo

A Brother Slips Away

Seems like just the other day
You and I, we sat and played
Come all ye tramps and hawkers
And the white cockade
Tea was flowing, dice were rolling
We were 20, not much more
And now they say you've crossed over
To that distant shore

And a brother slips away
Like a ship at dawn of day
A brother slips away
Another brother gone
A brother slips away
I reached out my hand too late
A brother slips away
A brother slips away

Juliet, you came up smiling
Wherever life would toss you
You were everybody's friend
Except the fools who crossed you
They rained down death upon your head
You took it in your stride
They'll never knock it out of you
That good old London pride

And a sister slips away
Sing her name to Heaven's gate
A sister slips away
Another sister gone
A sister slips away
I reached out my hand too late
A sister slips away
Yes a sister slips away

Davy, it was through your eyes
That we saw so many things
The dusty feet of pilgrims
The halls of mountain kings
That old poet's vision
Still coursing through your veins
It breaks my heart that I will never
See your face again

And a brother slips away
Like a ship at dawn of day
A brother slips away
Another brother gone
A brother slips away
I reached out my hand too late
A brother slips away
A brother slips away

And a brother slips away
Sing his name to Heaven's gate
A brother slips away
Another brother gone
A brother slips away
I reached out my hand too late
A brother slips away
A brother slips away

Oh, man. That's such sad news. Only Tofu I liked.

Rest in peace, brother (peace sign and sunflower)

What a jolt it was for me to check into Viva and read the shocking news of Stew's passing... I am deeply saddened that he left us so suddenly, seemingly way before his time. If there's an iota of positivity to this, I do feel very fortunate that I was able to make his acquaintance in real-life numerous times over the last decade or more, always at shows and invariably with his sweet wife Anne by his side. I have fond memories of connecting with Stew whenever our paths crossed, and will always remember his warm smile and his kind demeanor. Our connections were usually spontaneous and unexpected, and often memorable... for example seeing and hanging with Stew and Anne on Maui, pre-pandemic, during a DNB run there! Our last in-person encounter was at the Hopmonk Novato on June 16th for David Nelson's big birthday bash. Little did I know that was going to be our last moments together. RIP Stew... Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock your/my soul.

Very sorry to hear this. It sounds like he was a great husband, father and a friend to many.

I always enjoyed his music reviews and comments here.

All the best to his family and friends, I'm sure they are crushed.

You truly never know....

I am surprised abd saddened.

I always enjoyed talking with him at shows & with his wife.

May God bless all of you.

RIP Mr.Tofu and hugs all around, especially a big one for dickyb, Anne and Ian.

I owe a huge and heartfelt "Thank You!" to Tofu. He is responsible for keeping me and my family happy, satisfied and full of good pizza during our trips and visits to TXR.

Tofu, through the magic of the PZ, recommended West Brooklyn Pizza in San Rafael as the best pizza there. We were on a 1-2 large cheese pizza regimen every day while we waited and hung out with the hoodies for the doors to open at TXR. We were able to meet and talk with and offer slices to some of the kindest people during these times. I really can't imagine what those days, and nights of music, would have ben like without Tofu's recommendation. Thanks again, Mr. Tofu.
