My son Ted is a football player. He has a FULL ride at a division 2 college in Tennessee. EVERYTHING is paid for for 5 years on a year to year contract. Even if he gets hurt he is guaranteed 5 years. He even gets $2000 a year when all is said and done.
He's not happy.
Calling me at 1 in the morning telling me he is coming home. After a lot of screaming and threats he realize if he bails before the end of the year the school will charge him for 1/2 the year of everything and it is a little north of $20,000.
He is not happy because it is a small school (1200) on campus and he is bored. All everyone around him wants to do is drink and Ted is not a drinker. It makes him dizzy and sometimes puke. (This is a good thing to learn early. our family are not good drinkers)
I will admit it is a small boring town, but EVERYTHING is paid for. He even lives in a house on campus and not a dorm.
His dream is to go to a big division 1 school to play ball.
To do this he needs to go to a Junior College and Division 1 schools go to them before they go to high schools especially for big offensive linemen. He is 6-7 and 345 at this time.
He is getting offers from all over at this time. He is hot for Western Arizona, they are the #2 JCO in the country. They sent a letter of intent and has 14 days to decide.
I don't have the time and energy to fly out there to check out every letter and offer he is receiving, we just did this last year and I thought he made a great disision with Tusculum. It's always greener somewhere else for a 19 year old.
My question to ya'll is....What is Yuma Arizona like???

Do it. The west does not seem as competitive as SEC country.
A state school in the PAC 12 or mountain west would probably be doable.

and here is a consideration..
and here is a consideration....
jupiter has been expanding us for quite some time now.... there has been a lot of growth and abundance for many of us on many levels.... sounds like a total package for your Ted is just that... pretty sweet...
but, last monday, jupiter went retrograde, and thus, the period of expansion has briefly halted..... its been the advice of several astrologers i listen to, to keep what you have now.... the universe provided.. and so, now work with it.. its not the time right now, to push for more, and more.....

It sucks. My Brother was stationed there for 5 years and kept his house in SoCal because he knew he didn't want to buy there.
That being said, drinking is part of college culture everywhere, no way to deny that unless he attends Oral Roberts or some Christian college.
It's a character building time. Suffer through two years and transfer as a junior, maybe.
I mean, hey, isn't he meeting ANY girls ? What about hiking in the desert ? Can't really drink a lot when backpacking in the desert.
But, yeah, Yuma kinda sucks

Agree 1000%
He is going to talk to his coach this week not to quit but to tell him he does not want to come back next year. Coach can offer him up to $13,500 a year above his scholarship to stay.
This coach loves Ted and was following him for almost 2 years before Ted committed.
I asked Ted if he would stay if they bumped him up to that money and he said "I would at least think about it"
Just want to smack him upside his thick noggin.
I wish he could walk in my 51 year old shoes for a couple of days.
He is not too slick with the ladies, he's actually a good lookin kid and not because he is my son but he lacks self confidence in the female relations. He hates rejection. Hell your never going to get laid without a few no's along the way. The school he is at is VERY sports heavy. 18 varsity teams. 66.1% female. That's good numbers in my book.

Maybe we should be thinking
Maybe we should be thinking about a education. Sports is great and all, but I have seen lots of washed up jocks. I went to UNLV and lots of the hot shot football players, one being my room mate never made the pro's and today he is selling cars in Pa. This country is not getting any better a good education opens up more doors. I am not saying give up sports but doing both is a option, since it is college we are talking about. Glory days should be the theme song for this thread
Just my 2 cents

Bart-
Bart-
Yes I am all about the education. Football is paying for it 100% and that is a great thing. We have Florida pre-paid college I started for both of my sons when they were born. But if a football scholarship is going to pay him and everything else is great for my wallet. As laws go... when he graduates he gets the $ we put in it 19 years ago.
That is why I am so hot for him to stay put and get a great education from a very respected school in Tusculum College. It is the oldest school in Tennessee and the 12th oldest in the country. The founding fathers who started the school is from Princeton. He will also play a sport he loves.
But he is 19 and everything seems better somewhere else. I'll give you his phone number and you can talk to him. It's like talking to a refrigerator. Holds a lot of food, is big and heavy but has little reasoning.

I agree with you all the way
I agree with you all the way Tim. I just see education being very important these days. I was talking in general not being personal in anyway. It sounds like your son is one of your best friends and you just want the best for him. I was being a grumpy old man yesterday, I had a tough day after my radiation treatment. I do wish you the best of luck. Kids are a handful these days.

My son had some small schools
My son had some small schools offering him scholarships in basketball. His buddy who graduated two years before he did was playing at one of the small schools so we went to one of his games to check it out. Same as Ted's school, in the middle of nowhere, and about 40 people at the game. Campus was small and in the woods of Winter Haven. It was like high school with ashtrays. A lot of the students were communters so the place was deserted on the weekends, and his friend hated it. Driving home I told him do not go somewhere this small to play basketball, and to go somewhere that has a campus life away from sports whether he played or not. He also had interest from Penn, Columbia, Mercer, Campbell and a few others but he did not want to leave the state so he didn't even take the visits that were offered, boy was I pissed we didn't at least go up to Columbia. He had academic scholarships if he stayed in state and that is what he chose to do and just played basketball as a hobby, The coach at Sante Fe seen him in the gym playing while he was at school there and tried to get him to join the team but he turned it down.
Why not have him walk on at UCF or USF? or better yet that school Kiffen is at down in Boca. Kiffen could also show him how to talk to the ladies too. Best wishes for Ted

He does not want to walk on.
He does not want to walk on. I ask him why many times and he said "because"
I would LOVE for him to go to FAU, 50 minutes away and I have been a season ticket holder there ever since they built the new stadium. 42 yard line row A visitors sideline.
He wants to go where he is wanted. The campus life in and around where he goes is small but it is not tiny. It is the size of were we are here in Florida. I can go on and on with the clubs the school has, 100 yards from is house is the fishing club house, they go bass, catfish and trout fishing every weekend. The fucker loves to fish but he is too lazy or bored to walk 100 yards and put in some effort. He thinks everything is better anywhere else. Always has been that way. Told him that and procrastinating are not good traits to have in life.
He is to meet with the coach this afternoon and tell him he does not want to come back next year.
This is killing me.

I'd say let him go where he
I'd say let him go where he thinks he'll be happy. Guide him as you can but it has to be his decision.
Side note: my nephew got offered full scholarships at D-2 schools to play b-ball. It was our understanding that he just wanted to play ball in college. Turns out he just wanted to be tied to sports. Instead he went to a D-1 school (arch rival of his favorite team) and now is managing the team. He's investing his time into coaching now and very happy.....needless to say I'm very happy he's started cheering for the right team to.
