1972

Forums:

After 35 plus years of listening to the Grateful Dead, I have come to the conclusion that 1972 was their purest for of "jam band". Even with the moaning of Donna.

There is just something about this era I do love.

I started listening to them in the spring of 79 and did not see them till 9-11-82.

Just my opinion.

was listening to 1972/9/17 yesterday-just incredible.

the he's gone>the other one>sing me back home sequence is superb.

40min other one, pure gd bliss.

I go back and forth as to whether 72 or 73 was the best. 72 had the power, but 73 was sometimes zen-like in its perfection.

Usually 73 wins.

so good.

need some quality 1972 links to stream, today.

I prefer '72 over '73 because of the rawer tone and Keith is on fire. I appreciate the Wall of Sound as a technical achievement but I never particularly cared for the tone it produced.  My first GD album was Europe '72 so I have a natural bias for that era but the lengthy jams and wild improvisation of that year, plus the fact that Pig Pen was still active, give it the edge for me.

So Good.

need some quality buds to smoke, today.

It's 72....need brown with sticks, stems and seeds

1972

You are correct, sir.

I like the feel of mid eighties auds.

One thing that’s stands out for 1972 is Bill Kreutzman was an absolute beast on the drums that year. Stronger than 73-74.

There is that as well.

Worked my first Dead show in Sacramento in '72 as a gofer for the IATSE. Very fun time, but busy job, so I barely remember most of it, except for a couple of down times when I was able to sit on Jerry's amp case, at his invitation, to watch some of the show. Phil gave me my first Heineken backstage before the show started. Ah, to be 17 again!

Its just the raw sound, fuzzy audios, I can see a young Bobby spittin and kickin and smiling at all the girls.

71 ain't too shabby neither

minimal Donna in 72 - which was nice.

Pretty good year- caught my first 3 shows starting  in August- BCT ....then Winterland

fall72 to dec73 to be exact

Favorite year. Get a lil flavor from so many different dimensions. Next year 73’ is a close second favorite but with Pig still singing his classics it’s 72 for me.

i agree^^-the dark star/other one/playin' from europe are unmatched tho. i always go back n forth from 72/73 being my favorite dead-hard to shake that liquid jerry in 1973 tho. i think they were just as exceptional, and the additional tunes from wake of the flood that they didnt play in 72 just added to their first and second set performances.
