THAT is a damn good band.

I do seem to recall you were expressing your opinion that scott s is a  freaking good drummer

Molitz can sometimes work well for me when he's not to how do I say  too Squirrelly

The guitars are solid tasty trained listening skills and playing skills

Two things Mr. Lesh at times can be pretty damn fantastic and two he still alive

he is quite well educated and writes very well

of which I was recently reminded by a prior repost   Rev

Yes, Amendola is a fantastic drummer, but he is not a "rock" drummer.

He's an avant-garde jazz drummer who flows in a "stream of consciousness" way, and like all the players in this group he's outstanding at improvisation.

He won't remind anyone of the Hallowed Molo and I imagine that many would(will) complain that he's too soft (hell, people complained that Russo was too soft) but he's great and will likely lead some jams into really cool places.

There is no way I should be going up to the clubhouse in the middle of the week right now, but I I'll likely be at both of these.

Everything in moderation, including responsibility.

GTTS!

i am most likely going to hit one of these. been a long time since i have seen phil. very exited to see amendola in the mix. imo its long overdue.

lance, a few years back i saw a trio of john scofield, wil blades and scott amendola play 2 sets at TXR, it was billed as a jazz trio, but it seemed like they knew the audience and knew the venue and played to that, playing 2 sets of totally over the top music. i dont want to call it jazz fusion, but it was some kind of rock and roll band jazz to be sure, was VERY high energy and almost comically over the top.

amendola rose to the occasion and really was far more intense than ive ever seen him before. he always has a sort of, as you said, avant garde jazz stream of consciousness flow, but in the context of weird/experimental improvised rock, he can hang much much better than many of his local jazz shows would have you believe.

lltd - amendola is a frequent nels cline collaborator fwiw and one of the few legit free jazz players to take the stage w phil

looks interesting... what night will Viola NOT dominate a set?

Daylight, I was also at that show with Sco, Blades & Amendola, and you're right, Amendola can cover a wide range of styles, but it has always seemed to me that many here on the black screen are a bit fixated on Molo and his strong, straight-ahead style as "the one" for Phil.

I think Amendola has played with Phil one other time years ago; it should be fun to see how he does this time and where this group goes, but I doubt this will be a Telstar type deal. They'll almost certainly play some of that dreaded "Americana" shit, so as always I'd try to leave expectations at the door.

And Viola may dominate the entire two day run!!!

I already have a ticket to see Amendola the very next night in his more regular state of weirdness when he's playing in a duo with free jazz sax player Phillip Greenlief. They're opening for a Mike Bagatta trio that will have the amazing Mike Watt on bass. That's happening a the Uptown Nightclub in Oakland on the 22nd and should be damn good.

Viola likely won't dominate either of those sets.

I'm in for the 20th......going to SF Jazz on the 21st for Lettuce with Scofield!
