2001 Monolith spotted in S Utah

Helicopter pilot finds 'strange' monolith in remote part of Utah

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/23/helicopter-pilot-finds-s...

The structure, estimated at between 10ft and 12ft high, appeared to be planted in the ground. It was made from some sort of metal, its shine in sharp contrast to the enormous red rocks which surrounded it.

Utah’s highway patrol shared images of both the sheep and the monolith.

Untitled_54.png

I would be curious if that monolith's dimension ration is 1:4:9. If so, extra credit to the person who put it there.

New Starbucks location?

if it was an artist, how did they get it there?

Maybe it's a tablet containing a new message from above. Joseph smith will be along to certify the results shortly

Rad

flash flood would quickly knock that over

unless....

That image looks like a scene on one the beam down to the planet takes from the original Star Trek series.

There's no way that that thing is 1:4:9. It's difficult to get an idea of its size from the pic, but I would say it's more like 1:12:60.

The 2001 monolith had the same proportions as a movie screen.

Some Burners got seriously lost.

My mind says it is fake but heart says it's real.

If I had way more money than I knew what to do with, I would be planting shit like that in remote places.

the mayans were off by a few years and 2012 is actually in 2021.

Edward Abbey’s grave.....

Next week's headline:

Florida man dies from exposure while searching for desert monolith

The video shows that it's about as deep as it is wide. From the pic Alan posted, it looked like a cosmic diving board.

related? circa 2001:

A black, steel monolith nearly three metres high has mysteriously appeared in a park in the American city of Seattle.

The unmarked sculpture, planted on a grassy knoll in Magnuson Park, seems to have been put in place on New Year's Eve (2001).

Lol.

>>>Edward Abbey’s grave.....

Supposedly that's in the Sonoran Desert lands of the Cabeza Prieta.  Peacock (Hayduke) buried him. And Abbey wouldn't want to be associated with that shiny thing. His grave is unmarked.

Cabeza Prieta.jpg

If that thing is in a wilderness area, they may remove it. BLM lands not designated as wilderness ? They could leave it. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a MWG clandestine trip to remove it.

my frined has friends outside of durango. apparently she is an "artist", and they leave "art" in remote places....i told him i wasn't that fond of "art" installations in the middle of nature, he said he kept his mouth shut when they told him at the time...

The Department of Public Safety has some video and this press release at this link.  https://dpsnews.utah.gov/dps-aero-bureau-encounters-monolith-in-red-rock...

On November 18, 2020, the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau was working with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to conduct a count of big horn sheep in a portion of southeastern Utah.

While on this mission, they spotted an unusual object and landed nearby to investigate further.

The crew members found a metal monolith installed in the ground in a remote area of red rock.

The crew said there was no obvious indication of who might have put the monolith there.

The exact location of the installation is not being disclosed since it is in a very remote area and if individuals were to attempt to visit the area, there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue.

It is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you’re from.

The Bureau of Land Management will be determining if they need to investigate further.

Mixed feelings as well turtle. Cool for a sec, but altogether pretty uncool.

I had a dream last night and the monolith played a large role in it. When I woke up I had the distinct feeling it was trying to tell me something important.

Turtle, does she paint faces on little rocks?

Found a couple of those on a fire pit at a campsite in Capitol Reef. Didn't take them, left them for the next person.

Before and after google earth pictures

the dates are posted in the pics

a monolith.gif

It looks like that area was smoothed out, what happened to the rocks or bushes that are in the first photo?

What's that pic supposed to be showing other then the obv time of day difference/shadows. Clearly some slot wash erosion but what else?

Fishcane, you can see the shadow of the monolith in the October 2016 pic.

If these pics are legit, it shows ya how remote these wilderness lands are that this isn't "discovered" for 4 years. Lands like this need protection so future generations can have the experience of wilderness.

www.suwa.org

Oh ok got it now

not my words

If anything, shadows are longer (and thus more distinct) in the second image. So who owns the land there? It's south and east of the Canyonlands Nat Park boundary. I assume it's BLM land. Highly doubt it's private property. If it's government land, is it OK to bring in motorized vehicles, clear off brush, dig a huge post hole, drop the monolith into cement, and smooth the soil over the top again? It has to be dug at least 2 feet into the ground to withstand wind, and in the video from the news article, the Utah State Employees climbed up to look at the top of it without tipping it over. I can't imagine it's totally hollow, and even if it's titanium, it must weigh at the very least a couple hundred pounds. This monolith sure wasn't carried in by some backpackers or on horseback, and that box canyon floor sure wasn't cleared out by hand rakes and hoes. I'm sure there are other questions I've not thought of....

I checked the BLM Utah interactive map... it's BLM land...

Never heard of that road. Put it on the list!

When I was about 6 or 7 in Palo Alto in my back yard I started digging a narrow hole.  I thought  I could get to China if I kept going

i gave up after a couple of hours

i did find a cool ceramic sculpture or something about 2 feet down

I wonder where that is now

I also could visualize flying around that back yard back then    About 30 feet off the ground.... about the same height as I floated above the carousel floor as pig and the dead climaxed at the end of lovelight   I can stlll see that in my head

Proof that  I was always a bit "different" ???

and I always write about myself   Kinda sad....

me me me me me   There must be more more more more

Pull that sucker up. Litter. Unique litter, but still litter.

I thought they may have hauled it out and buried it in sand, but cutting rocks and siliconing it in? F 'em.

Too bad the Diesel Brothers can use this for publicity. They were quick on it, like asshole publicity hounds can be.

They sold one of their special trucks to a local air-quality group, and they tested it and found it polluted like a mo-fo. Up to 36 times the normal emissions.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a31399622/diesel-brothers-reality-tv-f...

A Google search adds....

"The Diesel Brothers argued that they earn merely $1,500 on every truck they sell. What about TV rights, guys? Court records show that David Sparks alone was paid $482,000 by Discovery from 2016 through 2018. He is also building a 7,500 square-foot house for himself. Not to mention, Diesel Brothers own many other corporate entities, plus a helicopter and two airplanes. The Judge didn't rule in their favor, and in fact, directed the defendants to also pay the plaintiff's legal fees – about $1.2 million – along with the fine. So, that adds up to around $2 million."

And

"As of November 21st, 2020, Discovery has yet to cancel or renew Diesel Brothers for Season 8. We track the status of Diesel Brothers each day and will update this page as soon as Diesel Brothers is cancelled or renewed."

No wonder they're quickly out there like flies on poop.

Desert Solitaire turned into Arches, Where does it stop?

hey Slick, is  there a way I can contact you outside of this forum

Shit. Colbert sure gave Utah tourism a boost last night, Damn. And those litterers got the publicity they wanted.

So planting trees and crops are out!? Plant crazy useless shit to confuse reality more! OK!

You are definitely from Portland, OreGONE to hell.

Uh, huh?  wow, that was random....ly not necessary....geez, where's the humor these days?

Doesn't look like a good spot for a garden.

>If I had way more money than I knew what to do with, I would be planting shit like that in remote places.

That sounds like a blast!!!

I've always held a suspicion that things like this are the result of wealthy prankster types who are battling boredom at a higher level and simply enjoy some harmless fucking with humanity. Shame they didn't leave a treasure map and label 1 of 200

Good stuff!!!!

Some hikers found it and climbed the 12 - foot structure.

Interesting story at above link.  Apparently it's been there for quite some time.  People in an Airplane tracking Bighorn Sheep noticed it.

Duuhhh -

Helicopter,  not airplane.

Monolith Who.jpg

Shiny Trash.

It should end up at the Trump Prez Library (Trailer)

Trash is right. And now the BLM is actually considering leaving it there? What horse shit. https://www.sltrib.com/news/2020/11/27/utahs-mystery-desert/

PR lady from the BLM said  “I can assure the public that we aren’t going to be hasty in our decision about the future of the structure,” said BLM spokeswoman Kimberly Finch. ”We also are enjoying the conversations, the inspiration, the fun that people are having with it. We completely encourage that. So we hope people will continue to have fun with it and to be safe as far as accessing the site.”

On Tuesday, a host from the Discovery Channel’s “Diesel Brothers” show flew a helicopter to the site in Lockhart Basin, speculating on camera that he could be the first to reach the sculpture since the biologists. When he landed, however, others had already beat him to it — some 30 people throughout the day — who had arrived by ATV, e-bike, Jeep and dirt bike.

On Wednesday, a similar-sized crowd congregated at the structure. Ryan Quiggle and Elliott Evans, two students at Brigham Young University, drove for a dozen hours to reach the obelisk and make it back to their graveyard shift at the Missionary Training Center in Provo.

Comments on the story:

Teddy Roosevelt put it well when he said, "The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it."

Let us remember the whole reason how the structure was found. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources were conducting a big horn sheep survey.

Now, the big horn sheep get to share the land with 100s of people stomping around their space, noisy ATVS, dirtbikes, and vehicles zooming down the dirt road. Maybe the Bighorn Sheep will gather together and ram into the thing and knock it over themselves. I can only hope.

********

They don't want to take it out because it will leave a hole? The swarms of people coming to see it will cause a lot more damage than leaving a hole. Take it out. Take it out, now!

*********

Kudos to the writer for resisting the temptation to call this thing a "monolith." A monolith is a large, single stone. But the thing isn't an "obelisk" either. An oblisk is "a stone pillar, typically having a square or rectangular cross section and a pyramidal top, set up as a monument or landmark."

No, this thing is one part ego, one part Toblerone package, one part Altoids box, five parts vandalism.

*********

this sets the precedent that you can install your version of "art" anywhere you want.
I don't believe that's a good idea.

**********

How long before yahoo's have it tagged? The crowds are already streaming. Take it out, it will create more problems than it brings wonder.

**********

BAD ART

2014, Zion and other national parks: "It's particularly appalling when someone claims to be an artist when they are truly vandals in the parks. Maybe in another appropriate place, it's art. But these are parks protected for their own beauty and their own history." – Cory MacNulty, National Parks Conservation Association

GOOD ART

2020, Bears Ears: ”We also are enjoying the conversations, the inspiration, the fun that people are having with it. We completely encourage that. So we hope people will continue to have fun with it and to be safe as far as accessing the site.” – Kimberly Finch, BLM spokeswoman

**********

It will probably have to be removed if for no other reason than to dissuade copy cats from suspending a freshly spray painted Weber Grill between two hoodoos in Goblin Valley and then declaring it art.

From today's story in the SL Tribune -

"Although the Utah sculpture has been most commonly called a “monolith” in news coverage, Utah’s former state archaeologist Kevin Jones has pointed out that’s a misnomer; monoliths are cut from a single piece of stone."

I remember the Lockhart Basin area back in the 80's. The feds were considering siting a nuclear waste repository in between Davis and Lavender Canyon. It was my first foray into environmentalism when "Don't Waste Utah" was started in 1983 or so. Yep, locals were promoting the idea of that area being a perfect place for the nation's nuclear waste. Even though the heat from the waste might make the salt in the rocks a little less stable and a bit more fluid.

The best story I heard is when a BLM person from Washington D.C. came out. They'd been looking at lines on a map. They exited the car, looked around, and slowly said "I had no idea." Yeah, we know. Luckily we got it stopped.

https://www.nytimes.com/1984/03/05/us/utah-towns-debate-nuclear-wastes.html

If you read the story in that link, Calvin Black was a 22 year county commissioner whom Ed Abbey turned into Bishop Love in "The Monkey Wrench Gang". He wore a piece of uranium around his neck as a necklace to show it wasn't harmful. He died many years ago (1990?) of cancer.

And gone was it ever there at all?
But they keep on dancin'

Now we see the damage. Stupid ass DWR shoulda kept their damned mouths shut.  https://www.sltrib.com/news/2020/11/29/visitors-utahs-mysterious/

Folks on CNN this morning wondered if there may have been missing ballots in there.

Interesting story and photos at above link.

Supposedly that's the 'capstone' of the item,  with a little pile of rocks.  Who(m)ever hauled it away had to put some effort into that.  Heavy item to carry.  Nice chunk of stainless steel;  I'd use it for building material.  It would look nice as a Column with brick walls.

I see a tortoise face in the rocks in Stus picture

That's Mitch McConnell.

That's a frequent occurrence in the red rocks. I saw a Jer Bear face on one hike. Tried to take a pic to share on here but it came out B & W. Didn't look as pronounced as in color.

And then the shadows change and *poof*, they're gone. And then there's new ones!

Now there's been one found in Romania.  Between that and an uptick in cattle mutilations, I think we are at the start of a big alien reveal.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9001495/Now-mysterious-Arthur-C...

from another site:

On Friday, 3 friends and myself drove the 6 hours down to the middle of nowhere in Utah and got to the “trailhead” around 7 PM after passing a sea of cars on our way in.
We passed one group as we hiked towards the mysterious monolith, while another group was there when we arrived, and they left pretty quick after we got there. For the next hour and 40 minutes we had the place to ourselves.
I had just finished taking some photos of the monolith under the moonlight and was taking a break, thinking about settings I needed to change for my last battery of drone flight when we heard some voices coming up the canyon. We were contemplating packing up our things as they walked up, so they could enjoy it for themselves like we did. At this point I looked down at my watch and it was 8:40 PM.
4 guys rounded the corner and 2 of them walked forward. They gave a couple of pushes on the monolith and one of them said “You better have got your pictures.” He then gave it a big push, and it went over, leaning to one side. He yelled back to his other friends that they didn’t need the tools. The other guy with him at the monolith then said “this is why you don’t leave trash in the desert.” Then all four of them came up and pushed it almost to the ground on one side, before they decided push it back the other when it then popped out and landed on the ground with a loud bang. They quickly broke it apart and as they were carrying to the wheelbarrow that they had brought one of them looked back at us all and said “Leave no trace.” That was at 8:48.
If you’re asking why we didn’t stop them well, they were right to take it out. We stayed the night and the next day hiked to a hill top overlooking the area where we saw at least 70 different cars (and a plane) in and out. Cars parking everywhere in the delicate desert landscape. Nobody following a path or each other. We could literally see people trying to approach it from every direction to try and reach it, permanently altering the untouched landscape. Mother Nature is an artist, it’s best

As I posted previously  - "I wouldn't be surprised to see a MWG clandestine trip to remove it."

On last night's TV news... video is here   https://kutv.com/news/local/colorado-man-claims-he-saw-who-removed-utahs...

Ross Bernards is one of many who were drawn to the Utah desert by the allure of the shiny monolith.

“Someone posted the coordinates on Reddit, and then it ended up on Google Maps," Bernards told 2News.

So, he and his friends came from Colorado, hoping to see the monolith before it was gone. And in fact, he came pretty close to missing it.

“Weren’t expecting it to come down in front of our eyes,” Bernards said.

Bernards says he caught some of the monolith’s final moments.

“When we got to it, there were four people there who had strung up some Christmas lights around it, were having fun," he said.

But when that group left, he says four more people moved in.

“One of them turned to us and said, 'I hope you got your photos,'" he recalled.

Then, Bernards says, they began working to take down the monolith.

“Both of them just started pushing on it and pushing on it, and you could tell it was moving," he said. “They all went to the other side to push it back the other way, and it just popped out and landed on the ground with a massive thud."

Bernards said the people came prepared with tools and a wheelbarrow, and hinted at their objective.

For those who didn’t make it to the monolith, Bernards has a message:

"There is no conspiracy. This was 100% man made. This has nothing to do with aliens, has nothing to do with top government things. It was empty inside; it was just full of air. That’s it."

**********

Well, that shoots down the idiot's theory that there were hidden ballots in there.

"Leave no trace?"  They should have taken the triangular piece of steel with them.

Joy, check your e-mail.

What a massive screw up by the Department of Wildlife Resources. Shoulda just kept their mouths shut.

From the Desert News -

Although the Bureau of Land Management, which owns the land where the monolith was planted, and other government officials pleaded with the public to avoid the area due to its remote location and hostile terrain, people began flocking to see the monolith.

The result, according to BLM spokeswoman Kimberly Finch, was resource degradation of vegetation flattened by vehicles, toilet paper tossed around and human feces on the ground. Several passenger vehicles had to be towed as well because of the high clearance required on the rugged roads.

And now the one in Romania is gone.  https://www.reuters.com/article/us-romania-monolith-idUSKBN28B4UB

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - A shiny metal monolith vanished on Tuesday from Romania’s mountainous Neamt county, four days after its sudden appearance close to an ancient Dacian fortress sparked speculation it may be related to a mystery structure seen in the United States.

A spokeswoman for Piatra Neamt police, Georgiana Mosu, said officers are conducting an inquiry into the illegally-installed structure, which was positioned in a protected archaeological area from Nov. 27.

Removal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6c2EhNtSj4

Slackliner and climber Sylvan Christensen, along with BASE jumper Andy Lewis, took credit for dismantling the monolith in a YouTube video showing a piece of the structure. The 23-second video is called, "We REMOVED the Utah monolith."

In statement issued Tuesday night, Christensen said the group removed the now viral monolith because of the "damage caused by the internet sensationalism and subsequent reaction from the world."

"We removed the Utah Monolith because there are clear precedents for how we share and standardize the use of our public lands, natural wildlife, native plants, fresh water sources, and human impacts upon them. The mystery was the infatuation and we want to use this time to unite people behind the real issues here — we are losing our public lands — things like this don't help," the statement reads.

Christensen went on to describe the environmental degradation — a concern echoed by the Bureau of Land Management — brought on by the scores of people flocking to see the monolith.

"People arrived by car, by bus, by van, helicopter, planes, trains, motorcycles and E-bikes and there isn't even a parking lot. There aren't bathrooms — and yes, pooping in the desert is a misdemeanor. There was a lot of that. There are no marked trails, no trash cans, and it's not a user group area. There are no designated campsites. Each and every user on public land is supposed to be aware of the importance and relevance of this information and the laws associated with them," he said.

"Let's be clear: The dismantling of the Utah Monolith is tragic — and if you think we're proud — we're not ... The ethical failures of the artist for the 24" equilateral gouge in the sandstone from the erecting of the Utah Monolith, was not even close to the damage caused by the internet sensationalism and subsequent reaction from the world."

Ironically, Lewis — a famous athlete — faced local criticism in the Moab area several years ago when he and multiple others temporarily draped a summit of the nearby Fisher Towers with Christmas lights and ornaments, according to a Moab Sun News story.

He (Bernards) said the men appeared and left with the monolith within 8 minutes.

BLM trying to repair the damage

https://www.ksl.com/article/50061247/utah-land-managers-investigating-mo...

SALT LAKE CITY — The Bureau of Land Management has team members on site in San Juan County where the mysterious monolith was first observed last month, assessing and repairing the damage caused by the hordes of people who flocked to the area to take pictures of the shiny structure.

That damage in southeastern Utah includes tire tracks where no trails or roads are located, sensitive vegetation that was trampled, litter and human waste left behind by monolith fans.

"The staff is there to clean up some of the visual evidence of people being out there and to take care of the damage we can readily assess and repair," said BLM spokeswoman Kimberly Finch.

Crews will rake over tire tracks left by vehicles that illegally drove off-road in the area. The idea is to return the landscape to its previous condition and remove all traces of the trash left behind.

Finch said even though the agency asked people to refrain from visiting the monolith due to the lack of amenities like parking and bathrooms, people ignored the pleas and damaged the red rock country as a result.
