23 Years & 1 Day Ago: 7/12/90 RFK Best Post '74 Dark Star?

Forums:

Almost a half hour and during that '89>'90 period when the band looked & sounded refreshed & upbeat, especially Garcia.

7 minute jam into verse 1, 16 minute space, 7 minute jam after verse 2.

https://archive.org/details/gd1990-07-12.149730.UltraMatrix.sbd.cm.mille...    Soundboard, Ultramatrix, Charlie Miller, Dan Healy

what makes a matrix ultra? is it going to transform into a fighting, missile launching robot?

I would like to suggest the encore on Friday, May 13, 1983.

I was there.  It rained at that show.  RFK is a rust bucket now.

i wonder if the woman loudly blabbering during music never stopped realized she would be pissing people off literally decades later

I wuz there, too.....

5 hours each ways and made it to work the next day with a big smile planted on my face over my first Dark Star.

Had a little yellow post-it on my desk w/ 2nd set list for 2-3 years until I left that job.

Daylight .... completely agree. At least no one was making videos on their mobile phone!

Great show, don't recall it raining. Although that may have been the show we snuck in the mezz because it was raining.

I was there and was very excited to hear my first Dark Star, after 18 years and 78 concerts.  Saw more than my fair share of The Other One and Morning Dew, but for years Dark Star avoided me like it owed me money.

As I recall, it rained during the first set and that cooled things down for a wonderful 2nd set.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the show in question happened 33 years and one day ago.

I guess Krab don't math too good - I know I don't English too good.

I think Miami '89 is the weirdest/wildest, but I really like 12-31-81......

10-31-91 another late era Dark Star.

i was there, maybe best I saw.

89 tape is amazing.

dumped buckets.

was threatened by 2 cops while high.

memorable.

and that's 33!! yrs ago

Correct answer.

Miami '89

7/12/90 RFK

10-31-91 "We ain't many"

Saw all three and wouldn't even try to rate them

They all worked quite well at exceeding my expectations of what I wanted from the band

honorable mention:

Meadowlands 89 2nd set opener

10 posts to get basic math right

But only 18 posts to get to the top three Dark Stars after the hiatus, in order, out of a thousand or so shows.

Love this place.

a good portion of this show is PRIME dark, scary, angry dead.

IMO few recordings capture this sound properly, and the 10-25-89 miller sbd is one of the best examples of this sound. one of my favorite shows from the 89-90 era. victim, estimated, dark star>drums>space are all fucking great.

10-9-89 Warlocks break out gets an honorable mention.

^As does 12.31.89

Set 2 from 10/26/89 yes

10 posts to get basic math right???

I second 10-9-89 Hampton Warlocks as a mention.

aaaand the ken kesey halloween ds rap after bill died. that one was the best post-brent...

12/31/78

Short but heavy & deep. Figuratively & literally 4:00am music, Phil THUMPING on Big Brown, the band playing as one, and the transition from the weird little Other One sandwiched in the middle of Dark Star back into DS is the stuff the universe is made of.

That little transition is Jerry Garcia and the band at their very, very best.

As is the Wharf Rat they played immediately after.

I was there and on the field.  I remember when the first notes hit, the guy behind me gave me a bear hug.  we all lost our minds

even bobs vocals on mamu>big river have the anger. IMO thats when bob is at his best. i want nothing but angry bobby forever and ever, growling and screaming.

Nassau Coliseum 3/29/90 w/ Branford has to be mentioned as well....
