... Shoreline 8/25/93!!!!! I enjoyed this one as much, and maybe more than most of the shows I was able to make it to. I always thought people underrated it. However, "Eddieboy" was another big fan of this show. I wish he was here to relive the memories with me as we had done in the past on PZ. It would be nice to have him retell the "friend not foe"/Brent story, too. Does anybody out there remember this show? Or have a good Eddieboy story they want to share? I'd be all ears to hear about either... (((((Go Team Phil)))))

I made the flight into SFO just before the Eugene shows.... I had graduated college in May, picked up a used VW bus there, didn't bother registering it and drove straight to Greyhound Rock to camp out before making the drive up to Eugene, what a trip. Picked up a wanderer along the way that was very hard to get rid of(eventually parked my bus in the frigid NE winter until it was so cold he had no choice but to move on!)

The Eugene shows were a trip, my first time connecting with Kesey so that's forever burned in my brain and a highlight of my life. I hadn't planned on heading back for Shoreline but I went where the wind blew me in those days.... ended up with 2 tickets to the first night(8/25) and miracled some ungrateful girl who didn't even say thanks and took off running like she stole it. Lol. This was a great show, but I was expecting it to be after how good Eugene was. Gorgeous FOTD and So Many Roads in the first set and the pre drums segment of set 2 was incredible. The Terrapin led into a wonderful Middle East flavored jam. Despite some sound issues, the Attics floored me at the time(not sure how that one holds up on tape) and the Lucy encore was lovely.

Found somewhere to camp before a couple more great shows there before back to Berkeley for the Greek Phish shows with JJ Cale. Then it was back n forth for the fall East JGB run, Warfield in October and then down to LA for the Dec GD shows( I skipped fall GD East coast) but caught Garcia Grisman in Jan 94 and finally bailed after the Feb4-6 94 JGB run, went home and got a job... wish I still had that bus

Coming directly off the heels of the exemplary 8/22 Eugene, they picked up right where they left off. 8/25 is an excellent show and the best of this 3-night Shoreline run.

1993 has extremely strong pockets oif shows throughout the year. Although I believe '92 has (a few) higher highs, '93 incorporates consistently interesting performances.

The overall scene was getting really bad at that point, outside the venues and in the surrounding neighborhoods in particular. By that time Shoreline was doing two 3-show GD runs a season, and it was after those August '93 shows that the city of Mountain View said no more Grateful Dead.

We had to convince them otherwise.

It wasn't easy.

It was during this time when they started putting up 10-foot chain link fences along the pathways that lead from pavilion, out to the grass and concourse areas. The reason being an onslaught of wooks who would just trample across the bushes, flowers and landscaping, in order to save a few minutes. It was a bit of a microcosm of larger issues at play.

After one of these shows, I saw a dreaded hippie try to climb over the fencing as the line was moving slow. He got stuck by the seat of his pants on the way over and just hung there like a rag doll, unable to free himself. He was still there dangling when I left, receiving verbal abuse from passerbys. Righteous retribution.
