30 yrs ago an almost perfect album

Great songs and even better production with Tuesday Weld on the cover, this one checked all the boxes for me. Interestingly enough, I came home from a jazz gig last night and felt the need to give this disc a spin. I did a few times while working on photos and when I woke up today one of the first things I saw was Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend was released 30 years ago today. At least to these ears, it sounds as fresh today as it did then.

No clue who or what this is....

I'd call it 90s power-pop, Woz. Sweet got a lot of airplay in the midwest in the early 90s.

Gotcha, thanks!

Power pop is probably the best genre description there is for where the music falls in the spectrum of rock. Matthew Sweet got a lot of airplay everywhere in the early 90's. One of the "secret" weapons he used, both on recordings and live, was an arsenal of excellent guitarists, including the above mentioned Robert Quine, Richard Lloyd and Ivan Julian. The production of this album, as well as many others, recalls the best of George Martin with The Beatles with the guitars recalling classic distorted Neil Young. More recently he did a three volume release of re-worked classic songs with The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs called Under The Covers.  .

He was a lot fatter than the skinny-legged hipster I was expecting when I saw him a couple of years ago. Lard-ass indie rockers are kind of rare.

This one came out 30 years ago this November, and IMHO is a much better record.

Nice pull Tony. The production is first rate, especially that crunching guitar. It's like you're in the room.

I only recall a few songs from this album but will give it another spin.

Seemed like he was the verge of being something much bigger, although certainly no shame in the career he carved out for himself.

A lot of almost perfect albums turning 30 (this is off the top of my head)
