DO NOT USE THE BIG BOX STORES on any home repair or remodel. I repeat DO NOT USE THE BIG BOX STORES.........unless you do like to get fucked in the ass !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I built bathrooms for years. If the workmanship and products installed are of high quality, than it will cost a lot.
Consider this, your bathroom will get more use and and last longer than a new car. So why should it be any cheaper than a new car. Why not pay a carpenter more than you auto mechanic. After all, the carpenter brings his shop to your home.
The most important thing to plan for :. Is the new bath easy to clean, or is it tons of tile with white grout just waiting to mold? Keep it simple, make sure the exhaust fan is vented properly. Don't spend over 15,000. Don't get the work done through a supply chain store. Go with a local contractor who has a history of quality work.
And remember, you shit will still stink in a new bathroom.
the raw materials used in a bathroom only cost less than the raw materials for a car by deciding to but cheap raw materials, and cheap can last, but only if the workmanship is up to par, and you take care of it.

Results from the first page of google results for "bathroom remodel average cost". I take this to mean you think average is "cheap".
The average bathroom remodel cost $11,364 in 2016, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, with about 20 percent of that being labor cost.
Keep in mind that although the average small bathroom remodel costs around $9,000, that your labor & materials costs will vary depending on location and quality of fixtures you choose.
$30,000.......Wow you could do a spruce up (paint, caulk, patch some grout (maybe even cheap new tile) & new linoleum & still have enough to buy a used Harley and cruise some county roads!!!!!
guy laid out the only mantra needed here, or in any construction/design project.
>>>>>>>I take this to mean you think average is "cheap".
probably so, and cheap in this sense as a monetary term, not specifically a quality, though in bathrooms and kitchens, quality and money usually go hand in hand.
glacier bay from lowes, or samuel heath or harrington brass from Anderson.
I'm a painting contractor in mercer county/hunderton county NJ and the best (and most expensive) kitchen/bathroom guy I know in the area would do a bathroom that size for 25k at the most. That's for products above the home cheepo line as well. I've gone in and painted a kitchen after Lowes was in there doing a kitchen remodel. It was amateur hour. Honestly could believe how pathetic the work was. This really nice old lady had obviously been ripped off so ended up replaceing a few boards of some kind of black greasey wall boards that looked like they had been sitting in the back of somebodies truck for ten years be retaping them. All kinds of choppy work in there. I'd get a few quotes from some local contractors who actually know what they are doing.
^Sounds like they're taking ya for a ride. I do a lot of work in Princeton, NJ which is prob highest price market I deal with regularly. Prices are always higher there for everything. Not sure how many prices you've gotten or what kind of appliances you're looking at but if you can't find a high quality contractor between 20-25 then that's tough even in that area. The funny thing is a lot of contractors get shit super cheap In the city and then charge outrageous prices in the surrounding areas. Playing people for fools.

Just did mine. Wanted to spend $10-$15k. Ended up just over $20k. That's a big hurt, but so far, well worth it. Mine was about 8' x 15'.
Ways to cut it down are there (tile sides of shower, not bottom, lower end cabinetry, don't buy the Italian heated towel rack, etc.)
I would say get multiple quotes as well!
For better or worse, bathroom gets a ton of use and therefore, alot of time spent in there. Make it real!

1. Speed
1. Speed
2. Quality
3. Cost
Of these three factors in any job, you can only, at best, have two in your favor at any one time.

Shopped the hell out and decided to pay more with a reputable firm, and have given them many recommendations since.
They even call periodically to see if all is well.
