93 JGB vs 93 Dead

Forums:

yeah yeah, different flavors.  But the more I listen to JGB from this era, the more passionate Jerry sounds both vocally and creatively speaking.

Am I off?

Your spot on.  Late era JGB is where Garcia would really shine.

JGB no contest

93 JGB is the most overlooked period of their existence... perfect blend of sound, tone and performance..,id say the sweet spot for latter day JGB ended with the 3 day Feb 94 run. Well rehearsed due to the new drummer, everyone was on the money(honey). Hit or miss after that

JGB yes

JGB at the Warfield was an easy winner vs the Dead at Shoreline. Mind you I went to both but I absolutely loved JGB at the Warfield. Plus JGB was never going to play Long Long Long Long Long Way to go Home.

My first wife got dragged to many shows by me and and an earlier boyfriend. Never got it until I brought her to one of those Warfield shows in the 90's. Light bulb finally turned on.

Going to the party or going to church, you decide.

93 JGB > 93 Dead

After Brent died, Jerry gave up on the Dead. You could tell he was just going through the motions. But with his band, he could do what he wanted and channeled most of his energy there.  It was night and day different.

Well said, RocknRye.

That worked out for the better imo.

Church was the A-Train for me from 11/23/77 on.

Melvin helps brings the church but also loves a chord to a fault.

I've told this story before here and I'll tell it again.   I think it was Buffalo (or Rochester) and my friend and I decided to go into the show super early as we had been walking around all day and just needed to sit and chill for a moment.  Hardly a soul in the place and as we're sitting in the way back of the venue, Jerry walks out on stage with full lights on and just rips for about 15 minutes and then walks off like it never happened.  I'm confident there is a recording out there somewhere of this.  Or maybe lost forever.

I saw the most of the Warfield JGB shows in '93 but saying they were better or preferable to '93 Grateful Dead is bit of a stretch. '94 perhaps...but not '93.

Other than fall '90 through '91, '93 was the bright spot in the Vince years.

Dunno if '93 JGB burned a little brighter.

In general I think yes, but as a couple folks above have noted, '93 wasn't a disaster in GD world.

I saw some very strong shows in '93 with an "Engaged Garcia" at Cal-Expo, Shoreline, Deer Creek, Eugene, Oakland....

That being said, there was nothing like the Warfield.....He clearly loved playing there, he said as much, and it showed.

After he started playing there again at the end of '89, I was hooked and made it my mission to see him there as often as I could....

Which led to sometimes having to make a decision: Grateful Dead in an arena or Garcia at the Warfield????

When it came to one or the other, I took the Warfield; my friends were Aghast, Flabbergasted, Amazed I would do this.

Managed to see every show but 2 between '89-'93, then had to miss some due to Life in '94-'95.

I have zero regrets about the way I played that.

I've probably told the story here before but my one and only face to face with Jer happened at the Warfield side entrance in mid afternoon Oct 93, having pulled up right behind the Dodge van "Family wagon"  he was riding in. Cool moment in time and he was gracious as hell to me, probably felt safe for a minute as there was no one else around besides his driver and assistant.

The other thing that was nice about those Warfield shows is they just stripped away all the bull shit that was swirling around the larger scene. Even at the time it felt like going back in time.

Good story Fish---Yes, the infamous Dodge van......

The one time I met John Kahn was in the tiny Warfield parking lot behind the theatre, around this time.

He was getting out of the brown Town and Country minivan driven by his wife. He had his bass in a black case,

He was nice, it was good to finally say hello after so many shows...

And yes El Niño, almost zero bullshit there....

It really was an amazing thing to experience, and I'm so glad I made it.....

THERE WERE ALMOST ZERO TALKERS!!!!

Good times!

I always appreciated the JGB in that era as he generally maintained clean tones(save for that pitch bender I think he began playing with in some song, like the Maker...)

Is TTB the closest vibe to 93 JGB?

Not in my experience.

i told you phil made me cry when he played dear prudence at the warfield. i mean, emotions just came over me and i cried.

Hey fish curious to hear your opinion what are the best (melvin era, electric) JGB vinyl releases?

need to fatten up the shelf a little bit in this department

Dunno which is worse - the painting of Jerry or the tags on the painting.

I really like the self titled JGB compilation, the gold standard for Garcia in the 90s...Also like electric on the eel 91 rsd release and the vol 1 Cap theater 1980 release. But honestly, I buy all of them and think for the most part the Garcia camp does a good job with its vinyl offerings. I know you said electric but The Almost Acoustic reissue is excellent and Ragged but Right sounds good too. If I were just to get one, I'd buy Electric on the Eel 91 or the self titled box. Hampton with Bruce should be affordable also but I haven't always been in love with the sound of that one. Eel 89 I'm not a fan of how 89 JGB recordings sound for some reason but killer performance...

Excellent, thanks so much. That's exactly what I would go for and will do. Heard about a bunch of pressing flaws and general disappointments with the box plus I knew they would make a million of them so I'm just kind of waiting to find a used/opened one that I can inspect real well in person before buying and live with my cd copy until that day comes

I've got probably close to all of the acoustic LP stuff already (yes ragged is A+) and bought most of the Bruce stuff on CD as they were initially offered so I don't really want to get redundant there

I guess electric on the eel is up next

I have children because of electric on the eel

So literally, Electric on the Eel, eh?
