I have posted about our epic road trip in celebration of my dear Lisa’s retirement …. trains, planes and a rented mustang convertible - Highway One up the coast.
With so many new moments packed into a week, some memorable experiences have run the risk of getting lost in the ether of time and memory.
Sooooo… About That Mobil Station on the CA/OR border.
Closing in on the conclusion of this road trip after 10 days in motion, we pressed on up the highway toward Eugene. Some 2 hours from the city, we needed to pull over for gas and bodily functions after morning coffee, juice & water in the car.
It was a big station - sparkly clean with two long bays - 4 pumps each. Pulled our ‘Stang to the front pump on the outer bay.
Ever courteous, I urged Lisa to use the facilities first while I gassed up. We were looking to avoid raising the convertible roof and preferred taking turns in the rest rooms over locking up the car.
But … when I exited the bucket seat and stood up, was greeted with the urgent and primal need to pee RIGHT NOW. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, dry pants or dignity. Red lights flashing….
Not quite to the level of Rubic’s Cube, but It was a Tom Cruise Mission Impossible moment. McGyver, even.
Evaluating options, with no one around me or my pump - peeing on the pavement was the worst ‘nuclear option’, to be avoided if at all possible.
There were no truly good options…..
IN the urgent moment …. making my move before bursting - I chose the bucket in the photo below:
Lisa: “Didn’t you have to pee?”
Don: “I’ll explain when we’re back on the highway….”
IF it had been you, and you were busted in the act, got any suggested one liners?

You peed in the window washer bucket? Do I have that right? Sounds cool to me. Sterile urine never hurt anyone. Better than wet pants or a big puddle for someone to step and slip on.

That's a classic Don....Isn't it great getting older?? Beats the alternative I guess.
You could have had the wife call the station as you were driving away:
"I strongly recommend you change the water bucket at pump 4..."
If that had me a cop would have driven up right then.....

If you were on the Oregon
If you were on the Oregon side, they wouldn't have let you pump your own gas, and you could have just gone and took a whizz.

Great story. I understand. Gatorade bottles. One of my favorite traveling accessories. Great for camping, too. Don't even have to get out of the sleeping bag.
I told my doc about that and she replied "Wide mouth, of course." We cracked up.

Slickrock .... I returned from vacation to Newark Airport 20 years ago (with my dawg) to find that a) I had left the headlights on, b) the battery was bone dry c) it was 1:30AM.
Triple AAA tow driver analyzed the situation but neither of us had any water and his shift ended at 2am.
Trusty Gatorade bottle allowed me fill that battery with urine. Battery finally took a charge and we were off.
AAA guy was properly amused ...

Ha. That's too funny. In the 1980s classic film Red Dawn, piss in the radiator saved the day.

That was very kind of you Don to be thinking of other's safety, and who knows how many lives you may have saved from that selfless act.
