AC/DC Tampa

Forums:

So this band hasn't excited me much since I was a kid but on a lark I attended last nights show in Tampa... made it to the rail and witnessed an absolutely insane performance. Straight up rock n roll and full of energy, these guys were AMAZING

That's pretty cool!

Fun.  Put their albums on the turntable only occasionally, but still easily in my top five shows of all time.  High voltage rock n roll.

Nice going, Fish.

Angus is the last of the original cast.  Still carrying the torch.

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap bitches

Thanks for the review and so happy that they Rock anymore

The best city in Florida, and St. Pete is not that bad of a neighbor

I was in Largo(about 20 miles from the stadium) for a week following the Suwannee 230 canoe race that finished a couple hours north. So literally a no brainer with no Fri night plans.... Super glad I went and mad respect for both Brian and Angus(and the rest of the band), they are as Rock n Roll as it gets....

The Pretty Reckless were good too, imho

When I first became aware of them in '78-'79 I was deep into my teen prog rock/Grateful Dead snobbery and thought they sucked.

After Bon Scott died in 1980 and Johnson took over and they really broke huge I hated them even more, because I thought Johnson's one-tone screeching scream was like nails on a chalkboard (I still pretty much do) and Angus's antics were juvenile so I completely disregarded them.

Then in '86 or '87 I worked one of their shows. I was just an usher at that point and didn't care about the show at all, figuring it was just another show to work, so I made sure my ear plugs were in securely, faced the crowd and did my job.

But about 15-20 minutes in they played Highway to Hell. When that epic church bell intro began a roar came from the crowd; it was that deeper, serious, HEAVY roar, the kind that's different than a normal crowd roar, the kind that happens when something truly great is happening and gets into your bones, the kind of roar that I have loved/been addicted to my whole life.

All these years later I can still remember that moment. I got chills from the sound of that bell and the roar of the crowd. I turned around to see the stage (risking Bill Graham seeing me and tearing me a new one) and as they played that song I suddenly realized that I had been missing what a fucking great rock 'n roll band they were. The sound that the four instrumental players made was so simple and basic, but it was so heavy, so intense, a true wall of sound.

By the end of that show I was a fan and have been ever since. Sure, there's fluff and a shallow silliness to them (and that damned screaming) but right beneath that is one of the great rock bands of all time.

I have always regretted not seeing them with Bon Scott, because any time I listen to their first records or watch a video with him I realize what a great front man and rock singer he was, how much better they were with him.

Still, I'm glad I eventually "got it" and have enjoyed many shows over the years.

So that's my little AC/DC story. Check 'em out while you can, because they're another one-of-kind band who's time is short.

Here they are at their absolute best... IMO.

Crazy how they went on to attain such an amazing achievement with Back in Black, mere months after losing their charismatic front man.

They already had the riffs and song structures, they just needed the lyrics and someone to sing them. It was Bon's family that urged them to not break up, that Bon would have wanted them to push on.  I'm sure it was cathartic as they dealt with their own PTSD from losing their mate.  Including Have A Drink On Me was a twisted  dark comic salute.

As a fifteen year old when it came out, I was in the target demographic. Played it to death then, and still have a soft spot for Back In Black.  I believe that it is still the second biggest selling album of all-time, after Michael Jackson's Thriller.  I didn't care for the follow-up, For Those About To Rock, though, and walked away from Hard Rock and Metal at that time, as I discovered the Dead, Zappa, and American Roots Music, and found the posturing in the Metal scene insufferablei.  Unfortunately, this judgment cost me the opportunity to witness the development of the Thrash Metal of Slayer and the early Metallica, which in hindsight I regret.  About the only latter era AC/DC tune I find memorable is Thunderstruck.

Yep, I'm talking more the success of the album in the wake of such loss then the timeline of pulling it together.

Wow, 45 years ago, Humble Pie opened for them @ the Spectrum.   Alvin, wailing away, rode on the new front man's shoulders (Brian Johnson) through the crowd on the floor.

A hot day outside & on the stage.

While they are an amazing, high energy live act, everything from Flick of the Switch on pretty much sounds the same.  Very formulaic and used to joke about how you knew exactly how an AC/DC song would go just by reading its title.

A Top 10 show for me was AC/DC opening for UFO the night after Senior prom back in 79. Me and my Prom Date stayed at a Hotel after prom and drove to Cleveland with a couple of my friends the next day. Me and my neighbors knew all about AC/DC from my friend's brother who was a Marine on Embassy Duty in Australia, the rest of Cleveland was unaware what they were going to be hit with. My friend's brother eventually killed someone, did his stint and is awaiting for the Police to shoot him in his next altercation, full on phsyco criminal.

i met my wife at an AC/DC show Aug 10, 1988...i was keeper of backstage passes and offered one to her sister , then to her, for an opportunity to get backstage. They both passed on the ' opportunity ' but i got a date for the next Friday night and nearly 37 years later here we are...and we just saw Alice Cooper last night...

Nice!! ^^

ill be at Alice Cooper tomm night
