The best …
“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.” N. Maclean
I recently rewatched A River Runs Through It, and was once again knocked out by the power and majesty of the film, which, under Redford's direction, is one of the finest adaptations I've seen.
So many great movies Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Three Days of the Condor. Directed Ordinary People.
Went to Sundance once and had a blast. Went with a bunch of people in the indie film/documentary film world. Rented a ski in ski out condo with about 10 other people and my wife and I were the only ones who brought skis. Ski all day on and empty mountain and watch films all night.
It was also strange that if you were in any restaurant or cafe every time the door would open and someone would walk in there would be a split second of silence as everybody turned to see if the person coming in was famous and then conversation would start again.
RIP and at least you don't have to watch the shit show anymore.
Ordinary People will always be one of my favorite movies ever! It's very devastating but at the end there is a lot of love and hope.
Mary Tyler Moore is just unbelievable in her role here. I can't say enough great things about this powerful movie.
I've never seen a river runs through it or the natural. I need to get on this right away it seems.
I remember seeing Butch Cassidy on videotape as a kid because my mom urged us to watch it.
All is lost is also breathtaking haunting and captivating and is open to interpretation. An entire move w/ one dude 50 words alone on the sea - go watch this immediately if you haven't seen it yet.
And Three Days of the Condor and Jeremiah Johnson. Redford truly was a giant.
And he was a nice guy too, according to my dad, who met Redford at a small restaurant in Westport, CT back in the 80s. My dad was there on a birthday date for his lady friend at the time, and when he saw Redford at the bar, my dad went up asked him if he wouldn't mind stopping by their table to say hello to his lady friend, and Redford graciously agreed to.
If you want to see a very young Robert Redford near the birth of his career, check out Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He's in at least one episode, maybe two.
Jeremiah Johnson has been a perennial favorite of mine since I first saw it with my dad at the movie theater.
When I was a kid it seemed he was in every one of my favorite movies. I loved Barefoot in the Park, Downhill Racer, Butch Cassidy, The Sting, Jeremiah Johnson & Three Days of the Condor.
IMO his best role has to be the Sundance Kid and the best movie he was in is The Sting, but his best work was directing Ordinary People. He nailed the bleakness and stress of that story perfectly, and it was his first time directing.
In these later years, whenever I've seen him I couldn't help but to be distracted and perplexed by his ridiculous hair piece. I get that as a lifelong leading man movie star vanity is going to be ingrained into the DNA, but at a certain point it seems to me someone of his stature can just say, "I'm Robert fucking Redford and you're not" and just be who you are.
But then I'm not a movie star, so what the hell do I know.
Anyway, it's sad, but overall it sure seems that he got the best things in life in full measure, so good for him.

Because nobody has mentioned it yet, I just wanted to add that Redford's later-career acting role in the film Sneakers is also one of my favorites.
