The epic true story of Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane

{Paul Kantner would become Grace’s third Airplane sleeping partner, and father of her daughter China. Grace had joined the band initially “because I wanted to have an affair with bassist Jack Casady. I love bass players, and he’s the best.”

After Jack, she began a relationship with drummer Spencer Dryden. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen was more like a brother. He once pulled her from the smouldering wreckage of a sports car after she’d crashed it into the Golden Gate Bridge. Marty was less chivalrous. “Did I sleep with her? I wouldn’t even let her give me head.”}

August 1966: Grateful Dead Interview

(From the MOJO NAVIGATOR R&R NEWS #4, August 30 1966)

Excerpt:

MOJO: Do you have any last message for all the little kids out there in the world who read our publication, all them little teeny boppers…?
WIER: Yeah, we could use some hard-workin’ honeys up at the house.
THE REST OF THE DEAD (in chorus): YEAH!
MOJO: We’ll put that on the masthead…
WIER: Put an ad in the paper for uh, “Come one, come all healthy, well-fed young honeys, willing to do work, and uh…
GARCIA: Take care of…
WIER: Take care of the group, preferably with their own money and stuff like that.
PIGPEN: Their own money, their own cars, and 18 years old.
MOJO: I’ll see what I can do. Thanks a lot!

Nice.

Nothing better than climbing those stairs up to the ballroom...

thx for the link

Very cool, I hadn't seen that before.

I just wish more people with a camera in their hands understood how to document history. Too many closeups of bad dancing and liquid light goofiness; we know what that looks like and it's always the same. I get that those images were new & the story back then, but I always want to see what the room & overall event looked like. Both amateur & professional camera operators are always obsessed with the closeup. It's a shame.

Still, some very nice historical footage. It's just amazing to me that 54 years later we still walk up those same stairs and groove in that same room.

And we're still dancing badly.

When I watched the video that thought struck me as well!

Wow, the BG 17 show. Here's the poster;

I bet Pigpen hit it in every way imaginable.

Speaking of women that Pigpen wrecked, I saw something on TV recently about Jimmy Johnson (the former NFL coach) going to high school with Janis and being friends with her. Apparently Janis' sister thought Jimmy banged her but he claims he never did.

Disregard the above, it's the BG 23 show. I didn't look at the date.

Got that poster somewhere.  Wish I had (been able to have ) gone up those stairs for that one

Cool dancing. The frug and the go/go variants with some early spinning (spasmodic jammin / jumpin Joel predecessors)

and it looked like it was OK to be a brunette back then    Fewer blondes

heathen >> I do not believe I have ever seen you dance in a couple hundred opportunities

Garcia: Well it’s not fun to have a bad time, you know what I mean.

LLTD, in general I think there is a VERY broad definition of what "dancing" is, especially at concerts.

Generally speaking I'd say I almost never dance at a show. I'd say what I do mostly (and what most people do in crowded rooms) is grooving to the music, swinging & swaying with my feet planted in place. But there are times when the music compels me to be a little bit more lively, at funk type shows and whatnot, and when there's more room.

You likely haven't seen me do it because I'm usually in the back of a room while you're almost always chafing on the rail.

Most of this footage was used by Bob Sarles, I believe, for the video of 'It's No Secret', on the 'Fly Jefferson Airplane' DVD from 2004.
