Albuquerque

Forums:

New Mexico is great state.   My brother lives there and my son went to undergrad at NMSU, so I have visited there many times (its a little too dry for me to live there).   Anyway, while the deserts and mountains are amazing, ABQ has some issues, especially with drugs, crime, and car theft.   Check out this crazy video taken by my brother's security camera this morning.

https://twitter.com/KenDobson12/status/1340071009823510529?s=20

The thief sideswiped his girlfriend's car and ran over his scooter while peeling out of the driveway.   To add insult to injury, my brother had just loaded a new wood stove into the back of the Jeep to take to his cabin to replace one that was recently stolen.

This is the third time the Jeep was stolen.  The last time, the perps spray painted it black in an attempt to disguise it.   He had the "club" but had taken it off because he was about ready to head out to the cabin.

You folks spend much time in Albuquerque?

That'th methed up.

It's amazing how much stress and financial waste one asshole with a bad plan can cause. Very sorry your brother had to go through that, Ken... I've only been to Phoenix years ago, which struck me as unappealingly gi-normous

I should've taken a left turn there. Don't make that mistake

He stole the jeep  out of necessity.  If caught he should not be charged, as no one was harmed.  Furthermore the crime should not even be pursued as it is a waste of resources.

Wow, that's crazy, Ken.

I've only been to ABQ airport... what is it like other than the crime issues?

Spent my time in NM on a road trip loop around the state (Gila Caves, tipi camping at Truth or Consequences, Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, and went to an ACLU conference in Santa Fe long ago... great museums in Santa Fe. Also visited a friend who was a member of the Yogi Bhajan / Ram Das ashram in Espanola.  Taos is next on my list. I liked it enough to consider living there.

>>>> what is it like other than the crime issues?

Its a medium size city set in the shadows of the Sandia Mountains, which are impressive and rise up like a wall on the east side of town.   Otherwise, flat with lots of adobe style ranch houses with xeriscape yards, a small downtown area, and lots of truck stops and commercial strips with sketchy characters wandering about.   There are a handful of brew pubs, some good restaurants, and a small hip area near the University of New Mexico campus.  Very Hispanic.

That's fucking nuts. How did the thief get into the vehicle, and get it started?

The rest of New Mexico is great, but yes - basically a giant, generational, methamphetamine epidemic In Albuquerque. Sad.

Been through there a couple / few times on the way somewhere else (usually GD shows) but the first time I was hitch-hiking and some Old Man in a dually truck stopped and gave me a lift a couple hundred miles East. I was headed West and that guy was going to Albuquerque.

The whole time he kept saying "Albert's Turkey, New Mexico"  so I remember that particular segment of the expedition.

I think that was 1980 and my first trip "Out West".

The incident made the local news:

I think the dude hotwired it.

>>>gave me a lift a couple hundred miles East. I was headed West

Stu, when you're hitching interstates, it's important to be on the right side of the highway.

>>>>>>Out of necessity ??? ....HA !- Very funny , numbnuts. -- Been to Gallup - close enough. -- I thought about Albq. on retirement. - Saw the high elevation and a few other negatives and dropped the idea. - Good decision.

I thought this thread was going to be about the song.

It's a pretty good song.

Sorry to hear about the dilemma.

I do love NM.  I graduated from WNMU in Silver City.  Loved living there for 5 years in the 90's.
As  far as I'm concerned, it's good people give NM a bad rap. Maybe I could still afford a house there someday.

Well New Mexico was recently voted the least friendly state in the US. Stealing cars IS rather unfriendly. This Is the Unfriendliest State in the U.S.

That sucks about your bro's Jeep ... as well as it being a recurring theme!  Lucky he didn't get into a confrontation with the person in the case he may have been armed..

Although I don't live all that far from the NM border, I don't cross it very often.  I did see D&C and Wolf Bros in 2018.   I was in and out for the latter, but did spend some time on the lot for D&C and observed how there seemed to be a stealth gang presence before the show;  which is not unusual at shows in a city, but what really struck me was how after the show it was a full-on local (non head) food vending scene.  Definitely not suggesting it should be associated with crime, but it was an interesting dynamic to witness.

I read a great book re: a Code Talker named Chester Nez that grew up moreso around Gallop & then Tuba City, AZ:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36135829-chester-nez-and-the-unbreak...

... his life growing up in the region was just as fascinating as his experience as a Code Talker in WW2.   I know our nation has gone to great lengths to subvert Native American populations, but learning of the horrific details can be striking.  One thing I didn't know about was "checkerboarding" ... forcing Native Americans to live on every other parcel of land so as to be conducive to "integration".  I don't know all that much about ABQ's history specifically, but can't help to believe the pot has been stirred quite a bit on this front in the greater region & wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the strife today is reflective of this undercurrent of not too long ago.

Have relatives who live there. Is Santa Fe the same? I would guess not.

Santa Fe is an expensive, artsy custie town.  Nothing like ABQ.   But just a little outside of town, however, you can find some places that are straight up third-world.
