Donald Trump says he is
Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the former prison on an island off the coast of California.
In a message on his Truth Social site on Sunday, President Trump said that "for too long America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders".
The reopening of Alcatraz would serve as a "symbol of law, order, and justice," he said.
The prison was closed in 1963, and Alcatraz Island is currently operating as a tourist site. It lies near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.
"Today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ," Trump wrote.
The prison would "house America's most ruthless and violent Offenders".

Glad I saw Alcatraz when I did. The tour was more interesting than I thought it would be. Everyone with headphones walking around in silence. The NHA for the park won an award for their work.
My Olympic scandal CD had a specially reworked cell number for the Olympic Committee. Was 102. The pic with the goofy get-up was super imposed after. I sure as hell didn't walk around SF and Alcatraz looking like that!

I have lived in the Bay Area
I have lived in the Bay Area all my life, but it ws only about 10 years ago that I went out to Alcatraz for the first time with a friend visiting from the Midwest who wanted to see it. The visit was intense. Lot's of heavy atmosphere in the old prison on that big rock.. When we visited the atmosphere was even more hyped up because there were artworks by Ài Wèiwèi, Chinese contemporary artist and activist., on exhibit around the island. An ironic space to host a fearless creator who has stood up to authoritarians in China throughout his life. That experience has given me profound food for contemplation ever since.
