Progressives cannot win the Presidency. If progressives are going to be a national force, they need to take control of the Democratic party. The leadership is more or less in place.
Meanwhile, conservative justices, appointed by republicans have brought us such decisions as citizens united, heller, and the recent dobbs(overturned Roe)
There is a substantive difference between the parties and their policies.

I am not sure that I overall trust Congress to get that right but at least the proposed patch in the link you provided seems sufficient for the moment anyway.
